5-32. Angel Base

What she had experienced could be crucial information for us. It might not be their main base, but she definitely knew one of the angels’ bases and what went on there. A significant lead. Missing this opportunity would mean starting from scratch again.

I realized I hadn’t asked for her name. In the past, I wouldn’t have cared, but now that we were talking, it was appropriate to ask.

“Oh, I’m sorry. Could you tell me your name? I’m Karna.”

“A-Ashera…”

“Well then, Ashera, we will ensure your safety. So please, don’t be afraid and tell us what you know.”

After a few seconds of contemplation, she agreed. I was worried about how this negotiation would go, but it seemed to be progressing smoothly.

Ashera began to speak hesitantly.

“I woke up in some facility. The room I was assigned was clean. I could see the sky from the window, but the ground was far below. I quickly realized I was in the sky. However, I was almost driven insane by the constant sounds of agony I heard…”

“So, the angels are conducting experiments on humans.”

“Yes, that’s right. Of course, I was subjected to them too… I only had minor external injuries from the shackles, but the experiments conducted on me involved drug injections…”

“Ah, that’s why you were scared of the ‘Healing Water.’ Sorry about that…”

“N-no, it’s okay. Eventually, I found myself able to use powerful magic…”

She mentioned that the angels called this magic ‘Spear Strengthening’ and the ability to create spears called ‘Spear Creation.’ Ashera, who had no prior connection to magic, was both surprised and terrified by her newfound abilities.

Why had they made her able to use magic? Following the drug injections, she began experiencing lung issues, but the angels continued to administer new drugs. However, no further magic manifested, and the angels were disappointed. That was the last thing she remembered before finding herself here.

“And then, when I realized it, I was here…”

“What about the others?”

“There were about forty people, I think. My son is probably still there…”

“So, the pseudo-skill experiments are happening in the sky…”

Muttering to myself, I looked up at the sky. Figuring out how to get there would come later, for now, I was relieved to have gained such vital information.

There were more questions to ask, but we needed to ensure safety first. We had no idea when the angels might attack, and our mission wasn’t over yet.

I stood up, took Ashera’s hand, and led her back to the others. I shared what I had learned with them. The fact that pseudo-skills could be granted to multiple people was unexpected, and Amariaz expressed his frustration.

Given that these techniques had been in development for at least a century, it was likely that they had advanced significantly. We needed to be vigilant about humans as well.

The number of our enemies had increased. The people of the Kilrock domain were likely under the angels’ influence, and there was a good chance we would face more humans with pseudo-skills. Unlike angels, it wouldn’t be easy to identify them at first glance, so we had to remain cautious. Even Ouren might struggle to differentiate them.

Both Amariaz and Ouren sighed simultaneously. They seemed to be grappling with a problem far more complex than I could comprehend, still searching for a solution. They thought deeply for a while.

“The sky… That was a blind spot. Where could it be…?”

“They’ve been researching pseudo-skills for at least a hundred years. Those forty people are definitely test subjects. And acquiring skills through drugs? That’s cheating! Don’t increase our enemies, decrease them, damn it! This is getting ridiculous. And do I have to handle all of this? It’s already a huge hassle, why add more work? Humans have short lifespans, so if we just wait a hundred years… But the person in front of me has lived a hundred years… Damn it!”

I worried about Amariaz. He’d probably go bald with stress in old age. Would he develop some trivial skill to prevent that? That could be amusing.

“Hey!”

Ouren suddenly opened his eyes, seemingly having found something as he stared in a specific direction.

“Ashera, right?”

“Uh, yes?”

“The facility, does it float in the sky with a net-like barrier around it?”

“Yes, that’s it!”

“Alright, I found it.”

Ouren snapped his fingers, and water materialized, forming a detailed 3D map of the terrain. This must be the angel base Ouren had located.

He asked Ashera to confirm, but since she had never been outside, she wasn’t sure about the map. However, it seemed likely that this was the facility conducting pseudo-skill research.

“Great, we’ve got the location. The angels seem to be fleeing, so let’s head to Lize’s place.”
