6-5. The Riverside Near Sacred Fish Plain

The sound of rustling leaves filled the air, growing louder as the wind swept along the river, passing by with increasing force. Eventually, the sound faded, leaving the area in complete silence.

This place was familiar. The spot where my explosion technique had once gone off was still visibly scarred, with shattered stones scattered around. It had been a long time since then, and I never realized that I had caused such destruction above my father’s resting place. Perhaps I should apologize when I meet him.

Putting that aside for now… where is the ‘Seal Surpressor’?

“Amariaz?”

“I get what you’re thinking, but what is it?”

“Where’s my dad?”

“Sorry, I really have no idea.”

“Can you try using your ‘Spatial Awareness’?”

“I’m apologizing because that’s not working either.”

“Dad, where are you?!”

This is a problem! Though, it’s not unexpected. I’ve been here countless times, and it’s even been a spot where I rested during training. I never imagined there would be a seal here! No wonder the angels couldn’t find it!

Amariaz was also using ‘Spatial Awareness’ to search, but without success. I had heard he was big, but there was no trace of a monster around here. Knowing that he would be sealed like Ouren or Lize, we should have found something by now.

“Can’t find it… where is it?”

“If only we could see the ‘Seal Surpressor’ barrier… why didn’t Uchikage-Grandpa explain it better?”

“Everyone’s gone far away by now, so we can’t ask them.”

“Yeah, it’s impossible.”

After the others dispersed to draw the angels’ attention, they each acted alone. I was impressed by their confidence in their skills, showing they were sure they could win.

I should learn from them! Though I doubt they’ll come here. If they do, it would defeat the purpose of drawing attention away.

“But… there are three angels waiting, and fourteen more coming. There are only seven of us… will we be okay?”

“It depends on the level of the angels. But some oni are coming as reinforcements.”

“Really?”

“Yes, Kenra-san and Gyou-san.”

“Gyou-san?! That old guy?!”

Gyou was the oni who served us sushi before. I couldn’t imagine him fighting, and neither could Amariaz. He straightened up when cooking but was usually a bent-over old man.

Though he had lived as long as Uchikage-Ojiichan and lacked skills, he must have considerable experience.

“…Still, I’m really worried…!”

“Our opponents have skills, after all. Seriously, where is it? Will it appear if we wait?”

“I don’t know…”

Even if we wait, it probably won’t show. This is bad. Everyone’s drawing attention, and we’re wasting time.

“Should we move around instead of standing still?”

“Let’s do that. Can you use ‘Substitution’ on me? I might not notice a sneak attack.”

“Got it. ‘Substitution.’”

Now we’re safe. Let’s start searching. Though I know this place well, where do we look first?

We focused on the riverside, searching for the ‘Seal Surpressor.’ It should be easy to spot with its translucent red barrier, even underwater.

Despite our efforts, we found nothing. We searched under tree roots, rocks, and the riverbed gravel, but there was no sign of the seal.

“Ugh…”

“I’m really at a loss…”

Amariaz sat down roughly. I, too, was at my wit’s end and lay back. My head hit the ground with a thud, but it didn’t hurt; it just made a good sound.

“Yeah… this is…”

“We should regroup with Uchikage-Ojiichan and get more details. He left us with no explanations…”

Amariaz sat cross-legged, pouting, which was amusing.

Groooh.

“…Huh?”

Groooh.

The moment my ear touched the ground, I heard a sound. I stood up quickly and looked around, but there was no sign of anything. It didn’t register on Amariaz’s ‘Spatial Awareness,’ so it wasn’t an attack.

“What’s wrong?”

“…Maybe…”

I lay down again, this time brushing aside the gravel and pressing my ear to the ground.

Groooooh.

It was faint, but I recognized this sound from when we freed Ouren-san. It was the breathing of a monster.

“Y-Yuuzen-kun-kun…? Could it be…?”

Amariaz pointed to the ground, trembling. I nodded slowly.

“He’s here… my dad…”
