7-8. The Church in the Sea

They knew they were saying something strange. However, the scene unfolding before them was undeniable proof.

Indeed, Dacia and Iubora had plunged into the sea, and a few hundred meters around the church were encased in air.

The church stood alone in the sea, with a pocket of air surrounding it. How oxygen continued to be supplied was a mystery, but it was clear that some kind of skill was in use.

It was possible that among the angels Dacia and Iubora had just killed, one had the skill to maintain this air supply. If so, the oxygen might soon deplete, and the air around the area could vanish. Nevertheless, they believed they had some time.

Despite these thoughts, Iubora seemed slightly uneasy.

“Why were angels kept here? And why weren’t they released even after Ouren and the others were resurrected?”

“Weren’t they just waiting for the right timing?”

“… I see.”

“There is that possibility. Any other findings?”

“That’s all from us. Also, Lurimcos-sama, Atrak-sama, and Yaqi are working separately. We’re waiting on their reports.”

Iubora had gathered information from several locations, with devils assigned to investigate each area. In addition to the three mentioned by Dacia, several devils with relevant skills were also involved. This small, elite investigation team operated in groups of two or three, except for Atrak, who worked alone. He never left the devil castle yet managed to gather information.

One could only wonder what kind of skill allowed such feats, but it also indicated that Atrak was physically incapable of moving. His body had deteriorated to the point where, without his skills, he might no longer exist.

In any case, they couldn’t share any more information with Uchikage and the others until the rest of their team returned.

“We’ll continue investigating a bit more, but don’t expect much.”

“Understood. Please handle the matter with Abyss.”

“Got it.”

With those final words, they ended the communication through the crystal. After wiping off the blood that had splattered on them, they tucked the crystal away.

“Let’s leave here quickly.”

“Yes, we shouldn’t linger. We have another target in mind.”

“Where?”

“South of here. It seems to be… in a forest.”

Iubora spoke while tilting a stone tablet he had pulled from his body. Deciphering the tablet was difficult, even for the user Iubora, taking anywhere from minutes to hours. This particular tablet bore the word “south” and a carving resembling a forest, with an indeterminate structure depicted vaguely.

Generally, the harder it was to decipher, the better the information. However, in this case, they knew where to go but not what awaited them. The vague depiction suggested the possibility of valuable information being hidden.

With their next direction clear, Iubora absorbed the tablet back into his body.

“Alright, Dacia-sama, let’s go.”

“Yeah.”

With a powerful swing of her longsword, Dacia parted the sea overhead, revealing the sky. The two then spread their wings and soared out of the sea.

“Huh?”

“… I see.”

Flying through the sky, they furrowed their brows at the sight before them.

An angel stood there. Clad in white garments adorned with gold, draped in a veil-like robe, with a golden necklace around his neck. His long hair completely obscured his eyes. Though his face was hidden, his divine presence was unmistakable. To the two devils, this angel was a malevolent being that misled people.

However, this angel had a different aura from those they had encountered before. Clearly possessing skills, this angel might have even outlived the devils.

“Iubora, do you recognize him?”

“Do you think I would?”

“Well, no.”

The only thing they could understand immediately was that the figure before them was undoubtedly an enemy.

Dacia pointed her longsword at the angel, and Iubora transformed his arm into a massive claw.

Sensing their hostility, the angel bent one hand and curled his fingers into a fist.

“Devil, aren’t thee?”

“What’s with this guy’s strange way of talking… Can’t you tell just by looking?”

“Mi  eyesight ish poor.”

Sharp needles of light protruded from his fist. Instantly, Iubora leaped in front of Dacia and swung his massive claw.

The sound of collision echoed as both the needles of light and the giant claw shattered.

“Quite tough.”

“Tought I, of course.”
