Chapter 6-2
It was as the King previously stated, he had been thinking of naming Princess Alicia as his successor for quite a while now. Though, the only person he ever consulted about this matter was Nizel.
There was no precedent of Heilland being ruled by a Queen. There had been times where a Queen would reign as a ruler, but they were all merely acting as a temporary ruler until they found a true successor to the throne. This made both the Privy Council and the nobles believe that it would be Alicia’s husband who would succeed the throne.
In addition, the King never confirmed and denied their assumptions. Other than that, the contents of the lessons that Princess Alicia studied previously didn’t include the vital lessons for a Queen’s education. Thus, everyone completely denied the possibility of her becoming a temporary Queen, let alone succeeding the throne for real.
The reason for this was, the King almost gave up on his idea of naming Alicia as his successor.
There was a problem with Alicia herself. She was perfect as royalty as she treated her subjects without discrimination and her subjects loved her back for her honest and upright character. However, she was too innocent for the throne.
She was lovely like a rose, an untainted princess that oblivious to the people’s malice. While this was her virtue, it was also detrimental if she were to live as a Queen. In addition to that, she hated to study, forcing her to become the successor would just put her in unnecessary hardship.
However, lately, she had changed. It started around the time she appointed Clovis as her aide.
Originally, she loved to act like a normal kid her age, always trying to enjoy herself while neglecting her studies, but ever since that time, she had been working hard at her studies, starting to widen her horizon and she started to interact with people with the dignity of a Princess.
No one knew exactly what happened to her, however, the King was sure that something inside Alicia’s heart had changed.
“What was Your Majesty’s answer to Alicia-sama’s intent to become the successor to the throne?”
“I told her she doesn’t have what it takes currently.”
Nizel expected that answer.
If Alicia had been a prince, it would have been easy to accept her as the successor, but she was a princess. In order for the King to name her as the successor, she would have to prove to him that she had what it takes to rule over the kingdom first.
Of course, this was mainly to convince both the nobles who would serve her in the future and the neighboring country of Ealdar that she was capable as a ruler.
The Empress had been hinting for quite some time now that she wanted to marry her son, Prince Fritz to Princess Alicia. It was obvious that she wanted Prince Fritz to rule Heilland while she sat at the highest throne in Ealdar.
After that, she would call the Prince back to Ealdar when she stepped down from her throne and make his descendant succeed the throne of Heilland. Then, she’ll only need to appoint an Ealdar supporter as Heilland’s Prime Minister, then everything will be perfect for her.
That was the reason why the King didn’t approve of her marriage proposals.
“I will only name Alicia as my successor after she proved herself worthy. We have to silence that cousin of mine first after all.”
The King’s didn’t beat around the bush at all as he delivered his words with a calm tone and gleeful smile, like always.
He was always the kind-hearted and gentle king, but he was also slightly mischievous. He was a man of character and a wise king, Nizel both respected and adored him. But sometimes Nizel would also feel dread whenever he thought of the King’s endless wisdom.
The reason why the Empress of the neighboring country that was known for her catastrophic personality hasn’t moved to invade Heilland in earnest wasn’t only because of the aforementioned priority, it was mostly because she approved King James’ capability as a ruler.
Both of them were like the kings above the chessboard. The two rulers, completely different personalities and ideologies, yet were similar in nature. Both of them were probably already thought far ahead for their countries, far more than what Nizel was capable of, and were moving the way their countries accordingly like how they would play chess.
As if to shake off the shiver that ran down his spine, Nizel shrugged his shoulders exaggeratedly. With a light, yet daring tone, he said…
“Your Majesty is truly a bad person. Letting a little girl do everything on her own while offering none of your help, won’t it be too tough for her?”
“No, no. I offered my help to her, you know? After all, my beloved daughter made a big decision on that day. As her parent, I want to help her out, you know?
But at that time, the Princess, like a blue rose blooming with dignity, declared unwaveringly.
That she wanted to carve her own path.
Nizel’s body trembled, now with a different feeling from the dread he previously felt for the King. The noble and beautiful figure of the Princess who had stood up for Clovis back at the ceremony came to his mind.
He wished to see the crown rest on her blue hair that reminded him of the sky with his own eyes.
“Cia had an excellent aide, I’m curious to see what he could come up with. But first of all, I want to observe what exactly my beloved child could do.”
Princess Alicia and her assistant, Clovis. For some reason, Nizel could feel his excitement rising through his body. The turning point in history was about to come, he was sure of it.
