“Alice, what is the situation with Mr. Matthias and the rest of the group?”
After parting with Eto and company, I immediately contacted Alice via Message.
In reality, I was hoping to talk to Matthias or Gato, both of whom were physically present at the scene, but Matthias was devoid of magical power and could not use Message magic, and Gato was too preoccupied with the battle to respond.
[Mr. Matthias is suppressing the Commander of the Knights with no problem so far. That’s not a battle of human dimensions. No corpse short of Bades can even enter to back him up.]
“I guess so.”
However, that was to be expected of Matthias. In short, this would mean that Matthias would have to contend with the Commander of the Knights single-handedly, after all. Can Matthias, who has been fighting to buy us time to escape, keep Elias glued in place for a while longer at this rate?
[As for Gato… I honestly don’t know. To begin with, the concept of halting someone in his mind is so foreign to him that he is prepared to take a gamble that may result in his death at any moment.]
As I figured. Gato was only a brainless mercenary.
At the moment, he probably had nothing else on his mind but to finish off Shiryu before his eyes.
Therefore, I asked Alice something that had suddenly occurred to me.
“Um, who is the one who is fighting Mr. Gato as we speak?”
[The student you called Shiryu. You know, the boy who chopped off Eto’s leg.]
The mere mention of those words was enough to set a chill down my back. It must have been Alice’s preference that she deliberately said it in a way that stirred up my nerves. She really was a woman I wanted to kill.
Nonetheless, I can’t afford to worry about such things right now.
“Is his younger sister there? She is the female student named Shizuku that I told you about.”
[Ah, that girl? She initially intended to assist her brother but was rejected, and after wishing him luck, she went inside the dome, so she’s probably around there right now, I think.’]
I stopped and gave it a few moments of thought. Should Matthias and Gato prove to be outmatched at any moment, I would have headed to their rescue at once, but there were some things I wanted to finish up if at all possible.
After some consideration, I decided to let Matthias and the others hang on a little longer.
“I will make a short detour before heading to Matthias and the rest. Until then, please join Mr. Matthias and the group and somehow hold them back, Ms. Alice.”
[Seiously, I can’t even help them with the corpses I have with me right now! …I get it. But you still want me to do something about it… I will do whatever it takes if this will redeem what happened before.]
The last remark seemed to embody an emotion that wasn’t characteristic of the usual Alice.
However, Message was interrupted before I could address that, so I too decided to focus on my own task. In any case, the situation was such that I didn’t have time to spare even for a minute or a second. I would truly like to take my time and have some fun, but I will have to behave in a TPO manner―
“Everyone, don’t panic! There is an exit at the end of this corridor, so move along and don’t shove the people in front of you!”
Shizuku, who had separated from Shiryu at the entrance to the lagoon dome, had joined up with a separate party and was liberating the hostages.
The hostages flooded toward the exit in a panic, which led to a difficulty in keeping control of the situation. What on earth had they suffered in the half day they had been hostages?
Shizuku’s “Heavenly Eye” reflected the figure of a person who jumped out of the line and came running toward them from behind. From inside the woman’s body, there was a rapidly swelling magical power reaction.
Turning toward her, Shizuku swiftly readied her cane and fired “Magic Bullets”. Having been shot through both legs, the woman fell to her knees on the ground followed by an explosion. The explosion was minor, but the sound of the explosion was not low, and the objects that had formed the woman’s body were scattered to pieces, sending the people who witnessed it into a frenzy of panic.
Since the release of the hostages had begun, this often occurred, further complicating the situation. The true identity of these people was likely a trap set by Kanaki, who mixed in suicide attackers among the hostages and then set them up to murder the people of the royal palace, including Shizuku, who had come to the rescue, as collateral damage.
Even so, the absence of extensive damage on the part of the royal court, which had arrived to free the hostages, was largely due to the power of “Heavenly Eye,” a unique ability hidden in Shizuku’s pupils.
“Heavenly Eye,” a power that granted the ability to detect magical powers far beyond that of humans, to see in all directions, and even to see at a distance, was one of the extraordinary abilities that Shizuku awakened upon arrival in this world. According to Elias, this ability was so rare that even in the kingdom, someone with “Heavenly Eye” may appear only once every ten years or so, but it was true that this ability had saved her life up until now, and even now.
Consequently, despite obstructions from the other side, Shizuku’s mission to free the hostages was proceeding smoothly at present. Even as she called out to the fleeing people, Shizuku could not shake the presence of her brother, whom she had left at the entrance, from her mind.
Please be safe, big brother. Once everyone escapes, I will immediately…
Sensing a sudden surge of magical power, Shizuku caught sight of something ahead of the evacuating people.
Right after that, a jet-black ray of light was shot toward Shizuku, piercing through the waves of fleeing people.
Perhaps this was the result of being able to detect the magical power ahead of time. Intuitively, Shizuku ceased using the barrier to block the ray, instead sank to the floor and let the black ray pass over her head. The ray of light that should have struck the wall produced no sound of destruction, causing Shizuku to look in that direction with a bad premonition.
The wall had been gouged out, just where the ray had hit, and a small tunnel had been created.
Screams ensued, and when Shizuku glanced in the direction of the screams, she found people with missing arms and legs slumped over in anguish.
Those who were alive had lost their hands and feet, some could no longer stand up by themselves, and many had lost their heads and chests and were already out of breath.
Shizuku was stunned to behold the spectacle that had been transformed into an instantaneous hell. Shizuku, though, at once recognized the gravity of the situation, and when the face of the man who had brought about this hell eventually emerged, her suspicions turned to certainty.
That man laughed troubledly when he realized that Shizuku was looking at him.
“After all, you dodged that one, didn’t you? As a magician, you’re excellent, as I thought.”
A natural-born murderer, who had killed many people in his former country and has continuously killed people since being brought to this world, had shrugged in reaction to Shizuku’s mutterings.
It is revealed in the next chapter that his kanji name is read differently so I will be doing edits. I will just be using Kaneki Ryo conveniently
