Transmigrated Farmgirl's Scheme to Get Rich - Chapter 199
Harvesting Chinese Foxgloves
Today, Mo Feng was harvesting chinese foxgloves with Ms. Liang when Xiuying arrived at the fields, pretending to be passing by. The reason she was pretending to be passing by, was because very convincingly, the road she was walking on could only return to the village and nowhere else.
XIuying went to the fields, and started chatting with Ms. Liang while collecting the chinese foxgloves, “Auntie, after harvesting so many medicinal herbs, you can definitely sell them for a very high price!”
Ms. Liang didn’t respond to her with a smile anymore, but instead replied with a cold face, “In a few days, after we sell this, we’ll be able to build a house. A matchmaker is going to introduce a nice girl to my Feng’er too!”
Xiuying looked at the back of Mo Feng, who was handling the donkey, “Mo Feng has become more and more capable. In the future, even if he doesn’t do anything else, he will still be able to live off income from growing medicinal herbs.”
Ms. Liang laughed in satisfaction, “Of course, my Yan’er had the insight to notice these medicinal herbs could become profitable, and my Feng’er has become capable as well. In the future, my family’s days will only get better and better.”
Seeing that Ms. Liang wasn’t saying anything interesting, Xiuying started to get bored, and after a while, she said she had something to do at home and went back home. However, she suddenly stood still after walking a few steps and said, “Auntie, my mother is looking for another fiance for me, he’s over a dozen kilometres away from here and is a widower.”
Ms. Liang internally berated Mrs. Li for being a vicious woman who treated her daughter even worse than Ms. Liang did. She was heartless enough to let her sixteen-year-old daughter be the second wife of a widower. If this was anyone else, she’d have been willing to help out, but this wasn’t a matter she was willing to interfere in. It took a lot of effort for Mo Feng to finally give up on Xiuying, and she didn’t want him to get his hopes up.
“Since ancient times, marriage has been determined by one’s parents and matchmaker. Others should not interfere with it lightly.”
Xiuying ran away, wiping tears from her eyes. From the fields, Mo Feng turned his head to take a look, but he didn’t call her name.
Mo Zenian was still living in the back courtyard, but every day after he returned from town, he’d show his face and occasionally bring some food over for them to eat. If this was the past, Ms. Liang definitely would’ve served his every whim and need, but now, the most she’d do is speak to him nicely.
After a few days of going to the fields, they had harvested a significant number of chinese foxgloves, which took a lot of land to dry. Ms. Liang felt overjoyed when she saw it, and personally went to town to ask Mo Yan where these medicinal herbs should be sold.
A large quantity of medicinal herbs should naturally be sold at the medicinal capital. Mo Yan wasn’t certain about the details of selling medicinal herbs either, so decided to ask Mr. Cao for help.
After Mr. Cao inspected their medicinal herbs, which had almost completely finished drying, he agreed to accompany them to the medicinal capital, and teach them about the process of selling medicinal herbs as well.
Ms. Liang was worried about Mo Feng going out by himself, so asked Zhong Cheng to take his carriage and go with them. For their first trip, they took a few baskets of medicinal herbs, as they were just here to learn what to do.
The medicinal herbs were successfully sold, and they had already gained a decent sum of profit just from their first trip. After discounting their expenses, they had earned ten-odd taels.
When they were returning, Zhong Cheng said that it was soon about to be nighttime and he was worried about Mo Ling being home alone, so he wanted to go back quickly. He dropped Mo Feng and Mr. Cao off at the side of the main road.
As the two were walking, Mo Feng couldn’t stop himself from daydreaming about the future, “Sir, in the future, I’m going to reclaim more land, grow more medicinal herbs, and with the money I earn, I’m going to buy a beautiful carriage and build the best house in the entire village.”
Mr. Cao chuckled while praising him, “That’s good! For farmers, land is the most important resource,” After saying that, he unexpectedly sighed, “We don’t have anyone to work my family’s fields, we’ll have to rent them out to other people after autumn.”
“Your family’s land is high-quality. As long as the rental fee isn’t high, the people in the village will be clamouring to rent it.”
“Then I’ll just rent it out on a first-come, first-serve basis!”
When the two arrived at the entrance of the village, Mo Feng heard someone call him and turned around to see that it was Xiuying. Mr. Cao had already walked ahead on his own.
Ms. Liang was making dinner in the kitchen, but hadn’t seen Mo Feng return home yet. They had promised they’d come back today, so she went out to ask Mr. Cao. Only then did she learn that Xiuying had called Mo Feng away.
She angrily ran to the Chen family, and started making a ruckus at the front gates, “Mrs. Li, where did your daughter drag my son off to! Give me my son back, and if there’s even a single scratch on him, I won’t let you off the hook.”
After this, the entire alleyway knew that Xiuying had dragged Mo Feng off to who-knows-where. It’s rare for the man’s family to come and pick up their son from the woman’s family in these kinds of situations, so everyone wanted to take a look.
Mrs. Li went out and thought she had been insulted, so immediately told Ms. Liang to shut up.
“Shut your mouth! There’s nothing good about this, stop yapping your big mouth.”
Ms. Liang retorted angrily, “How could you let us take your dirty laundry just like that, we’d never be able to rid ourselves of the shame!”
Mrs. Liang wasn’t one to lose out on a war of words, and forcibly tried to argue her way, “We still don’t know the actual situation! Stop speaking nonsense and trying to ruin my daughter’s reputation. If she isn’t able to marry into a good family, don’t even think about living in peace.”
Ms. Liang whipped her sleeves, “Let’s go and look for them!”
If the two of them were together, they definitely wouldn’t go to anyone’s house, the most probable locations they were in would be the threshing field, the wilderness…
Aside from their two families, a lot of people from the village started looking for Mo Feng and Xiuying as well, as they wanted to take a look at this rarely-seen form of drama.
When the sky had entirely turned black, someone found them at the fruit farm at the south of the village. The fruits had all been harvested, and the two were inside the small cottage inside the fruit farm.
When Mo Feng heard someone call their name, he hurriedly got up from the straw mat on the floor and readjusted his clothes. However, Xiuying didn’t even move, allowing her clothes to remain wide open and her hair to be in an utter state of disarray.
“Quick, tidy yourself up, what if someone sees you like this?”
Xiuying laughed coldly, “That’s exactly what I want them to see, that way, they won’t marry me to anyone else.”
A person poked their head inside the cottage, but Xiuying still had no intention of covering herself. Mo Feng blocked their view with his body in a flash, “Get out, get out! What is there to see here?”
The person turned back to yell, “They’re in here!”
This cry attracted a large crowd of people, and when Ms. Liang and Mrs. Li heard it, they also hurried over. Ms. Liang went over to drag Mo Feng away, but Mrs. Li extended her hands to block their path, “Stay here! You just deflowered my daughter, and now you want to leave just like this? I’m reporting you to the yamen.” [1]
Ms. Liang slapped her hands down, “Do as you will, let everyone here see! My son is still dressed tidily, it’s only your daughter who has dishevelled clothing. Who knows which family’s son she had seduced here and tried to blame my son for.”
Mrs. Li was so furious her face turned green. Normally, she had a lot of influence in the village, and had never lost face like this before.
She went over to slap Xiuying twice, and grabbed her by her clothes, “You shameless thing, you’ve lost all of the reputation of our entire family! If your actions affect the marriage prospects of your brother and sister, I’m selling you to a brothel!”
The crowd was discussing this passionately, pointing at all parties involved and watching the drama unfold with relish. Mrs. Li turned around and roared, “Stop looking, or one of you is going to lose their life!”
The crowd dispersed, and only then did Xiuying get up and slowly adjust her clothes. There were two red and glowing slap marks on her face, but she was still smiling.
Ms. Liang wanted to drag Mo Feng off and leave once more, but Xiuying said softly, “Auntie, I apologise for causing you to lose face, but as Mo Feng knows, this was my first time. If he doesn’t marry me, he’ll have a hard time marrying anyone else.”
“Shameless!”
Xiuying raised her head and smiled, “Your words aren’t harsh enough. Not only am I shameless, I’m so shameless I’ve disgraced my entire family. I’ve already ruined the rest of my life, what else do I have to be scared of?”
Ms. Liang slapped Mo Feng on the shoulder, “You brainless imbecile, why did you have to start an affair with this woman?!”
Mo Feng replied cowardly, “Mother, just let me marry Xiuying! In the future, when she enters our family, I guarantee she’ll pay her filial duty to you.”
P.S. It’s been a while, hasn’t it? I’m really sorry for the lack of uploads – I’m pretty sure this is the longest I’ve ever gone without uploading a chapter, and I’m very sorry about that. I’m currently in the middle of examinations, and I still have over a dozen of them to go in the next week and a half. I’ll try to get another chapter out around Friday or Saturday, but please don’t be disappointed if I don’t manage to accomplish that.
[1] A yamen is the administrative office of a bureaucrat in China. This wouldn’t be governing official Wu, but probably someone significantly higher-up in the bureaucratic hierarchy than him.
