Transmigrated Farmgirl's Scheme to Get Rich - Chapter 233
Exposed
After making dinner, Mrs. Li made Mo Feng eat alone in the kitchen, and served food to Xiuying. She told Xiuying that Mo Feng was willing to lend money to her, and wanted Xiuying to give it to her.
Xiuying took out the wallet under her pillow, and started counting out the money. The gleam of the silver taels dazzled Mrs. Li, and she snatched the wallet, “Give all of it to me!”
Xiuying repeatedly refused, “But this is my family’s entire year’s worth of income. If I gave all of it to you, what would I say to my mother-in-law?”
Mrs. Li hid the wallet behind her, and gave a fake smile, “I’m just borrowing the money, I’ll give it back, and it’s not like you’re short of money.”
Xiuying didn’t believe that she’d return the money, but Mrs. Li was her biological mother. There was no way she could tell Mo Feng to come over and have the two of them snatch the money back.
“I’m still in my confinement period, and my mother-in-law isn’t here. We still need money to sustain the family!”
“I’ll cook, don’t worry, you won’t starve to death.”
At night, she clutched the wallet tight, and went back home with a strongly beating heart.
The next day, the entire Chen family arrived at the Mo family at noon. Mrs. Li killed a chicken, baked white bread, and the entire family had a nice meal before returning home.
This continued for several days, and there were only two chickens left in Ms. Liang’s courtyard. She only let Mo Feng pick Ms. Liang up when the flour store had run out and there weren’t many grains left.
The past few days, members of the Chen family had come over every single day. It’d be fine if they were just having meals, but they also made a ruckus, and Mo Feng was incredibly irritated. However, no one cared when he scolded them, and he really wanted Ms. Liang to come over and lecture them.
Mo Feng took his carriage to town. When he knocked on the door of Lu Manor, Jin’er opened the door. She had seen him before, so shouted towards the courtyard, “Miss, your brother’s here!”
Inside the house, Ms. Liang had been sitting on the bed and drinking tea. When she heard Jin’er’s shout, Mo Yan helped her lie down before running out and hollering back, “Quick, let him in!”
Mo Feng went in, and when he was Ms. Liang coughing on the bed, his brow furrowed, “Mother, why is your cough not better, did you see a doctor?”
Mo Yan pretended to be wronged, “We have! But the doctor here isn’t skilled, we’ve used two different formulas but she hasn’t gotten better.”
“Then how about we go and find Mr. Cao, I’ll take mother back!”
Ms. Liang stopped coughing, “Feng’er, where’s the money from selling the chinese foxgloves?”
Mo Feng replied, “It’s with Xiuying! We got a total of fifty-five taels, even more than last year! But my mother-in-law borrowed twenty-two taels to arrange brother-in-law’s marriage.”
This time Ms. Liang actually coughed, and it was a while before she asked, “Son, are you sure she only borrowed twenty-two taels!”
Mo Feng froze at her questioning, “But she said that she only borrowed that much!”
“Have you seen the remaining silver taels? Did she give you a loan agreement?”
Mo Feng shook his head, and Ms. Liang sighed long and hard, “Son! How will I ever be able to close my eyes in peace!”
Mo Yan asked, “Brother, are you willing to give all of your family’s wealth to the Chen family?”
Mo Feng shook his head, “Of course not, I still need to save my money for my wife!”
“Then if Mrs. Li schemed against you and took away all of your money?”
“Then I’d go to her house and demand it back.”
“What if she doesn’t give the money back!”
“Isn’t she only borrowing money to help her son organise his wedding? If she doesn’t give the money back, I’ll stop the marriage from happening!”
Mo Yan clapped, “Good, then that’s what we’ll do. We’ll go back and chase Mrs. Li away, get the money back, set up a loan agreement, and we won’t have any ties with them from now on.”
Ms. Liang couldn’t care enough to keep up her coughing, and the three of them went back home via carriage.
When they entered, Ms. Liang went back to her room, and Mrs. Li greeted her with a face full of smiles, “You’ve returned, how’s your body?”
Ms. Liang looked at the smile on her face, and really wanted to slap her across the face, “You wanted me to drop dead that badly, huh! You really wanted to take away everything from my family?!”
“What kind of words are you saying? Who wants to take everything away from your family? Alright, since you’ve come back, I’ll return this family to you, and I’ll be going now.”
She wanted to end it here, but Ms. Liang called her out, “Hold up, give the fifty-five taels my family got from selling Chinese foxgloves back before leaving.”
Mrs. Li feigned being wronged, “I just asked my son-in-law to borrow twenty-two taels, as for the rest, I need to spend money on both your daughter-in-law in her confinement period and your grandson. Now that you’ve left, I’ve had to help out in the family, and I don’t think you’d be so outrageous as to make me use my own money?”
She was blatantly lying through her teeth, and Mo Feng couldn’t stand it anymore, “When had you spent money these past few days, you killed all of the chickens in my courtyard, we’ve run out of both grains and flour, and your family came over to eat and cause a disturbance every day. Everything they ate was from my family!”
Even Mo Feng was criticising her, and Mrs. Li couldn’t stop the smile on her face from slipping, “Can’t a natal family visit their daughter? Do you want Xiuying to cut off relations with her natal family?”
“It’d be good to cut off relations like these!”
Mrs. Li turned to call Xiuying, “Xiuying, they want you to cut off relations with your natal family!” Her voice was shrill, and scared little Mo Jing so much that he started crying. Xiuying didn’t care about her son and went out of her room.
Mo Feng wanted to speak when Ms. Liang tugged on his sleeve, “She can’t get mad, or she’ll stop producing milk.”
In Xiuying’s room, the child was crying loudly. Ms. Liang cared deeply about her grandson, so ran over to check on him. Mrs. Li smirked smugly, and went to leave.
Mo Yan darted over to stop her, “Hold on, sign the loan agreement before leaving.” After saying that, she opened up a pre-written loan agreement.
Mrs. Li only recognised a few words, and twisted her head to the side to avoid the loan agreement, “You’re bullying an illiterate old woman!”
“It’s fine if you’re illiterate, we can have governing official Wu come over and preside over this matter.”
When people in the village quarrelled, they naturally asked governing official Wu to act as a mediator. But how could what Mrs. Li had done be exposed? She naturally didn’t want to air her dirty laundry. Otherwise, there was no way her son’s fiancee would agree to marriage.
She replied obstinately, “I only borrowed twenty-two taels.”
“Then where’s the remaining money? Don’t tell me all of it was spent the last few days, you wouldn’t be able to spend over thirty taels even if you went to eat at Dengyun Tower every single day.”
Mrs. Li was at a loss of words, and blustered, “When has an unmarried girl been able to question what her elders do? Go away!” After saying that, she wanted to sneak back home.
Mo Yan went to block her again, “Sign the loan agreement first, you have to return the twenty-two silver taels you borrowed within three years, and return the rest of the money, or your son won’t be able to marry that fiancee of his anymore.”
Mo Feng also wanted her to return the money, and Mrs. Li turned to try and appeal to Xiuying, “Xiuying, we’re your natal family!”
Mo Yan said, “Sister-in-law, your natal family was originally willing to let you become a concubine. Ever since you married my brother, my mother treated you even better than me, and my brother considers you the apple of my eye. Moreover, you have a son of your own now. Disregard everything else, shouldn’t you plan out Jing’er future?”
P.S. And that’s the second chapter!
