You Sound Sleepy - Chapter 15
Que Qingyan’s voice was deep and clear. It put pressure on her like ice colliding with a wine glass. Lin Mian felt that this was the calm before the storm.
In her entire time knowing him, this was the first time he called out her full name.
Lin Mian’s heart almost stopped beating.
“Que…” As soon as she tried to speak, she choked and withdrew her words. She didn’t dare say his name.
“You – please don’t be angry.” Lin Mian carefully thought and gingerly put the sparkling water in her hands towards him. She whispered, “Would you like some water? I didn’t drink any of it…”
Set off by the dazzling lights in the banquet hall, Que Qingyan’s eyes were particularly dark and deep. He observed her silently. He didn’t take the water.
Angry. He must be angry.
Tonight was Que Qingyan’s mother’s birthday. After he had finished the seminar, Que Qingyan went directly to the Que family’s villa. During this period, he never returned to his apartment. He didn’t confirm whether the person he saw at the convention center was Xu Tong or not.
Que Qingyan narrowed his eyes, still silent.
He displayed self-control, letting the other party explain herself. Lin Mian clutched the wine glass, her eyes moist, trying to sort out her words. She felt like she was a defendant in court. No matter what she said, she would be convicted.
“Xu Tong is…”
Lin Mian didn’t want to deceive Que Qingyan any longer. Wavering between morals for a split second, Lin Mian decided to not sell out Xu Tong too badly.
“Xu Tong is my little cousin. She didn’t come to class because something popped up. So, I came to help -”
She wanted to talk about the taking notes part, but, remembering her sleeping in his class, she stopped herself out of embarrassment.
Que Qingyan, still emotionless, calmly motioned for her to continue.
“The midterm paper was written by Xu Tong…”
Facing certain death, Lin Mian wanted to at least put in a good word for Xu Tong. She had tried her best to put her in a good light.
After talking about Xu Tong, she began to talk about herself.
Lin Mian looked up, glancing at Que Qingyan’s face. She bit her lip. “I”m -”
“Mianmian, so you also came here tonight?”
She was cut off, interrupted. Lin Mian turned and followed the sound. A young lady walked over, carrying a red wine glass. She smiled and greeted her.
“It’s been so long since we saw each other, right? Last week, my friends and I were drinking tea at a jockey club. What about joining us next time?” The lady stroked her hair gracefully. “But, your Uncle Lin…”
“My apologies. I shouldn’t have brought that up.” She cut herself off and smiled apologetically. She then continued, “We haven’t seen each other in such a long time. I didn’t know if you were busy or not. I was afraid of bothering you.”
The lady’s makeup was delicate, her wrists adorned with gleaming jewelry. She looked familiar. Lin Mian just couldn’t put her finger on it. They probably had met several times before. Probably said a few words to each other. Who was she?
The social network between the rich was complicated. There were plenty of people who stepped on the low and worshipped the ones higher up. She rarely came in contact with those people.
Lin Mian had been sheltered since childhood. There were two types of people. Those she wanted to get closer to and those she didn’t.
Que Qingyan was placed at the top for people she wanted to get closer to. She was endearing and timid around him. But to the others…
The lady’s voice seemed to carry a hint of pity. Her eager inquiry was responded with a dismissive glance. The lady was stunned. Then, she turned to Que Qingyan who was at the side.
“Young Master Que,” the lady greeted with a blushing face. “I heard from my uncle that he is an investor for a polo club in City S. We have some VIP cards. I heard you’re an excellent polo player in England. If you have time, my uncle and I would like to invite…”
Lin Mian listened in. She knew that lady came with ulterior motives.
Still wrapped up in her guilt, Lin Mian turned her head and peeked at the side of Que Qingyan’s face, her ears perked up.
“Recently, I’ve been very busy. When I have time, I will contact Cheng Ze on my own accord. Please don’t trouble me if there’s nothing wrong.” Que Qingyan swept his gaze to the lady. He paused and said, “I need to talk with my friend.”
His tone was steady, unfeeling. He had ruthlessly cut off the lady.
The lady had just come over to talk with him. One of the reasons she came over was because she saw Lin Mian’s embarrassed expression. Thinking that some incident occurred between Que Qingyan and Lin Mian, she came, smiling.
However, the lady didn’t expect that Young Master Que would actually protect Lin Mian.
“I didn’t expect that you would know Lin Mian.” When the lady heard the word friend, her smile became a bit strained. She glanced at Lin Mian. “Since it’s not convenient, I’ll make an appointment with you guys next time. You guys can talk. I won’t interrupt.”
Once the lady left, Lin Mian looked at Que Qingyan. He must’ve had a faint recollection of me.
I just don’t know if he remembers how I pursued him many years ago.
At the banquet, there were women in gorgeous dresses and elegant manners. The surrounding people glanced over.
No longer able to call him “Professor Que,” Lin Mian tentatively stretched out her head and lightly pulled on Que Qingyan’s suit.
He looked down at her.
“You… can you…” Gritting her teeth, Lin Mian, her eyes wet, whispered, “Can you scold me outside…”
She unconsciously clenched the wine glass in her hands. She raised her head. “There are too many people. I need to go out to explain the whole situation to you clearly.” She paused. “Ok?”
As soon she spoke, Lin Mian regretted it.
I already did so much wrong, yet I’m still making so many requests…
Lin Mian wasn’t afraid of being embarrassed in public.
She actually just wanted the ladies to stop staring at Que Qingyan. The surrounding people took glances like they were readying themselves to hit on him.
When he heard these words, his expression moved slightly.
These thoughts couldn’t be concealed from Que Qingyan however.
He usually gave some leeway with his words, vague. However, now it was different.
She wasn’t his student. She went to his door and flirted with him like a little hamster. Taking his tolerance as encouragement, she repeatedly stretched out her fluffy paws to scratch him.
It was enough.
Que Qingyan’s needle-like eloquence emerged. “You don’t want me to be seen?”
Lin Mian looked into his deep black eyes.
She was entranced, stunned.
She couldn’t say a word, her face bright red.
However, in the end, Lin Mian was taken to a garden near Que Qingyan’s former house. She lowered her head and explained the situation, her voice thin like a thread. She said it all.
“Que…” She was lost in thought. “I was wrong. I’ve been deceiving you for so long. I wasn’t being clear with you…”
“I’m sorry. I’m really sorry.” Lin Mian’s head was ringing in pain. “Punish me. I’ll write a reflection paper. Just punish me.”
After a long period of silence, Que Qingyan’s voice sounded through her head. “I don’t punish my students physically. Besides, you’re not my student. I won’t punish you.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Lin Mian, her ears trembling, raised her head and looked at him.
Que Qingyan’s pupils looked back.
With a regretful expression, she stared at him, unblocking, the ends of her eyes light red. It really did look pitiful.
She had thought before that it was fine to help one’s cousin while deceiving the professor.
Moreover, her apology was sincere. Probably. She had admitted her mistakes, trying to relieve the blame from her cousin.
Que Qingyan bent down and leaned over. He began pondering.
Ok, so I said a few lies… that’s still fine, right?
A servant, pushing a cart through the pavilion, saw this and greeted Que Qingyan. Que Qingyan paused for a moment and continued, “Helping your cousin by taking her place in class is fine.”
“Since, you aren’t my student.” Lin Mian blinked, listening. “You don’t need to write a reflection paper like last time.” He paused. “In the future, there will be no need to attend my classes.”
Xu Zhu’s words flashed through Lin Mian’s head.
My boss isn’t a human when he holds a grudge.
“…” So, he still remembers that I deceived him! Lin Mian continued weeping. “You, you should punish me…”
The garden was silent. The European-style garden lamps shined a dim light on the trees. Two people were standing side by side near a swimming pool. A light shined on Que Qingyan’s body, mesmerizing.
Lin Mian’s eyes were really red.
He was going to ignore her.
Que Qingyan didn’t answer her. Lin Mian’s heart sank. Just say something, anything. The man got closer.
A shadow suddenly fell, covering her. Close, he raised his slender hand, which was covered in snow-white cuffs. His thumb brushed his wet eyelashes. Her red eyes began to cool down.
Lin Mian held her breath. She opened her eyes wide.
After wiping away the tears, Que Qingyan withdrew his hand.
Lin Mian saw his deep black eyes. His indifferent expression changed into a faint smile.
Her eyes were black, like a small animal with sharp claws. Que Qingyan smiled. “There’s no next time.”
He had told her this twice.
For the second time tonight, Author Mu Mian, a veteran in manhua, didn’t know where to put her hands.
Her face, which had been cooled down by the night breeze, was now red again.
15 minutes later, the banquet in the main hall had started. After cutting the cake, everyone sat down.
Que Min, holding her little daughter in her arms, glanced at her younger brother that was sitting to the side. She asked in a low voice, “I heard that you went on a secret little date with a girl in the garden. More than one person saw it. Do you finally get a girlfriend?”
Que Qingyan’s eyes flickered. He smiled and mused, “One of my students.”
She didn’t believe it. If it was just his student, then how did she get in invited to this occasion?
Unless he invited her specifically.
She glanced at the girl in the main hall. She was pretty, but she looked a little too young.
She bantered, “Where did you get this baby from?”
At this time, Que Qingyan’s phone vibrated. He had received a message.
Lin Mian: [… Can I still attend your classes in the future?]
There was another text.
Lin Mian: [I promise I won’t be noise, I won’t sleep, I won’t ever deceive you again!]
Lin Mian: [I promise. Promise promise]
The banquet had already begun. After reading this, Que Qingyan lowered his eyes, with a smile. He didn’t speak.
…I did it.
Halfway through the banquet, Lin Mian, not carrying about being polite, left the banquet in a hurry.
There were so many people in the mansion. If one person was missing, nobody would notice.
Before leaving, Lin Mian sent a message to her mother. Raun Lishu, thinking it was normal for Lin Main to not like such an atmosphere, didn’t say much. She said some kind words and asked the chauffeur to drive her back.
Once Lin Mian returned to her apartment, she did three laps. Rubbing her fading-blushed face, she went upstairs.
Now that she had her face-off with Que Qingyan, she needed to approach things differently.
Although Que Qingyan had a cold, indifferent attitude towards her, his emotions carried a hint of something that didn’t exist in a teacher-student relationship. To be more specific… he didn’t try to restrain himself to be polite with her.
In the past, Lin Mian was unafraid of tempting fate by getting close to him. Her advances were shut down subtlety or with unobtrusive remarks. However, now he was direct…
Lin Mian finished showering. She kicked off her slippers and went to bed. She buried herself in her covers, rolled up like a shrimp ball. After a while, a head poked out, biting the side of the blanket.
Moreover…he’s so freaking lethal! AHHHHH
After this battle, Lin Mian finally knew how polite and restrained Que Qingyan was being around her. She knew how much he tolerated it.
To cope, in the middle of the night, Lin Mian binged horror movies, not drowsy in the slightest. Then, driven by her sudden desire to do work, she finished her draft that she had been procrastinating on for two days.
After finishing the draft, Lin Mian placed down her pen. She poked her WeChat chat logs.
She had asked Que Qingyan if she could still attend his classes. He hadn’t replied.
What did that mean? Could I still pursue him… no I mean go to his class?
Two days later. Xu Tong returned to Canada. As soon as she arrived at the terminal, Xu Tong instantly ran directly towards Lin Mian’s apartment, not even relieving her luggage.
Lin Mian had helped Xu Tong cover her required class for over 2 months. How could the latter not be touched? Without saying a word, she held Lin Mian’s hand to her heart.
“Mianmian, I brought you a present.” Xu Tong sweetly said, her voice filled with gratitude, “Ethan and I chose it just for you. See if you like it or not. Ethan also says his thanks. You preserved our love affair.” Her face had a bit of reminiscence.
Lin Main forced herself not to hit Xu Tong. After resisting the urge, she softly replied, “ Xu Tong.”
“I was found out.” Lin Mian, her eyes at ease, lightly touched Xu Tong, apologizing. “Your professor… knows that I’m not Xu Tong. He also knows I was here to replace you.”
“…” Xu Tong stiffly smiled. After a while, she shakily said, “You’re joking, right?”
Growing up together, Xu Tong and Lin Mian had often fooled around with each other since childhood.
The thing was that Lin Mian was always gentle and looked sincere whenever she tried to fool Xu Tong. She looked so pure and innocent. Sometimes, Xu Tong would question herself on how could she doubt such an innocent girl.
However, those were all harmless jokes. This joke was a little too serious.
Xu Tong felt like she couldn’t take it.
Five minutes later, she collapsed. It was true.
Lin Mian went to the kitchen to warm up some milk. She poured it into two cups. One cup was given to Xu Tong who was still recovering.
She looked down, in thought. I don’t think I should tell Xu Tong that her professor just so happens to also live in this apartment.
Xu Tong had been busy with love for the past months. The class had been changed.
The old professor originally taught the class. He was famous for being strict and harsh. He was called a killer, a killer of futures. He had now been replaced with a new professor. The new professor had caught her replacing Xu Tong. Xu Tong asked a question. It was a matter of life and death. “Mianmian, is the new professor a killer?
The new professor…
The scene where Lin Mian and Que Qingyan were at the pool flashed in her mind. He wiped her tears. She blushed. These manhua-like scenes had never made her so embarrassed before.
Lin Mian had made an over-the-top request back then, her face blushed, flaring. “Y-You can you stop smiling?”
In fact, it didn’t even really look like he was laughing. The corners of his mouth weren’t curled up. But, his beautiful black eyes were narrowed slightly, humorously. Lin Mian knew Que Qingyan was in a good mood.
“…There’s no need to worry.” Que Qingscan’s gaze swept over her. He lightly said, “I’m not smiling at your blushing.”
I. Am. Blushing. Even. More!!
Lin Mian recalled that sene. She replied with certainty, “Killer.”
Xu Tong glanced at Lin Mian’s red ears. “…”
Why do I get the feeling that we’re not on the same page?
Xu Tong came here right after she got off the plane. Soon, she will go back to the school’s dormitory and pack away her luggage. Afterwards, she will come to affirm with Lin Mian again.
“Mianmian, do you want to come to class with me?”
Lin Mian lifted her head up from her draft. She nodded.
“Did you say that the professor is a killer? Why do you want to attend his class? Did you recently start a manhua with a legal theme?”
She shook her head.
Within a few days, Xu Tong finally knew what mean when Lin Mian called her professor a “killer.”
