10 Years After Saying 'Leave this to me and go,' I Became a Legend - Chapter 6
Let’s Go Goblin Hunting
There were several reasons that I chose the goblin hunting quest.
The first was that it was a poor village who put out the request. And so the reward was very small.
The second was that goblins were monsters who were about as weak human children.
However, they could be troublesome as a group. A new Adventurer might easily die if they underestimated them.
That is how much of a threat their large numbers could be.
Indeed, it was not unusual for new Adventurers to die by goblins.
The third and most important reason was that I could not ignore the damage to the village.
Goblins stole their livestock and ruined their fields. And in the end, they would even start to abduct people.
They were a big threat to a farming village.
And so with all of this in mind, I decided to accept the goblin hunting quest.
When I told the lady at the counter about my intention, she replied with a worried voice.
“Will you be going solo?”
“Yes. That’s the plan.”
“Don’t you know that it is incredibly dangerous for a newcomer to go hunting solo?”
“I do know that. But I will be fine.”
“That’s what they all say. And many of them die.”
She tried to stop me.
My real rank was S. I could easily win against goblins even without using magic.
However, on the surface, I was a newcomer Warrior who was going goblin hunting alone.
It looked like suicide to her.
And so she was only trying to stop me out of pure kindness.
It was important to have people at the front desk who could explain the risks to you. Goran had taught them well.
As I was talking to her, someone called me from behind me.
“Why don’t you come with us?”
“Who are you?”
“We’re F Rank Adventurers too. A Sorcerer and Archer Scout. But we need someone for the vanguard.”
You’re a Warrior, aren’t you? Let’s go together.”
It was a pair of young male Adventurers who called to me.
Hearing this, the girl at the desk chimed in.
“That is a great idea! You should join them!”
She said strongly.
Survival rates were much higher if you weren’t alone.
To be honest, I wanted to go alone. However, I wasn’t confident that I would be able to convince her.
Besides, they were F Rank Adventurers, which meant that they were new.
It was my job to teach them. I didn’t think it would be right to reject them.
“Alright, let’s go together then.”
“I’m Ario. I can use fireballs.”
“I’m Josh. Leave the archery to me.”
“I am Locke. I use the sword.”
It wasn’t a lie, as I was actually going to be using it.
Even my Adventurer’s card only had Warrior, which was my second job, displayed on it.
And so I left the royal capital with Ario and Josh.
I thanked the guards when we reached the gate.
They had given me clothes when I was half naked.
“Thank you for helping me back then.”
“No, no. We don’t mind. And it seems that you’ve made some friends.”
The guards looked at my clothes and smiled.
“Yes. Thanks to you.”
“And so you’re going out on an adventure?”
“Yes, to hunt goblins.”
“I see. Be careful out there.”
I thanked them again before leaving through the gate.
And then we set out for the village that was being attacked.
On the way, I asked the other two.
“You two seem quite young?”
“Really? I’m already 18. You’re not much older, are you Locke?”
“Uh…”
Not exactly.
I went to the place between dimensions when I was 30. And then I fought for 10 years.
So that meant that I was 40.
But being honest and saying that I’m a 40-year-old, F Rank Adventurer would just make them suspicious.
“No, I’m a little…um, quite a bit older than you two.”
“I see. But you look quite young.”
“Yes, you look young.”
They were good at flattering people.
Actually, Goran did say that I looked younger.
Maybe it was an effect of Drain Touch after all.
I really should consider making money off it as a beauty treatment.
I thought about such things as we walked.
While I talked with Ario and Josh, we moved on to birthplaces.
Both of them had only just come out of the countryside.
They had been hunting goblins and other monsters back home.
“We’re good at killing goblins. So you can depend on us, Locke.”
“That’s comforting.”
“Hunting goblins is annoying, but they are a big threat to farming villages.”
“You accepted the quest because you were worried about them too, right Locke?”
“Well, yes.”
I answered, and they smiled.
“That’s what I thought. Most newcomers don’t want to hunt goblins.”
As we were all people who were worried about the farming village, we got along well.
Ario was a cheerful person who easily got carried away. Josh was serious and did not talk much.
It took over a day of walking to reach the village. It was just past midday when we arrived.
It had been so long since I last camped outside, and so it was quite fun.
We then asked the villagers about the damage done and the direction that the goblins came from.
“They stole our cows…”
“Most of the time, they break the fences on the west side.”
Yesterday, my sheep…”
It seemed that the damage was quite bad. That was why they had made a request at the guild.
“So I guess their nest must be over there.”
“Yes.”
“As far as scale, there must be at least ten of them.”
“I think so too.”
Ario and Josh’s conclusion was mostly correct.
And so I stayed silent.
But I did think they misread the number a little.
A pack that could steal cows and sheep so frequently must be larger.
It was more natural to think that there were more than 10.
Still, it would not be dangerous as long as I was there. I could just help them if things turned sour.
And so our party of three headed in the direction where the goblin nest would be.
