A Great Man Who Does Not Appear in Magic History - Chapter 1
Bells are ringing.
(???: I hear devil’s voice.)
In a room at an orphanage, a young girl all alone was staring into the Void with frightened eyes.
Her blue eyes give off a bizarre radiance.
(???: ??Bad things always happen to me.)
????: From the defence tower to all Royal Capital Citizens. Magical Meteors have appeared in the Sky above the Royal Capital. Evacuate to the protection shelter immediately! ?
The evacuation order from the Holy Army resounds from the outside.
A gigantic Meteorite??a magical Meteor was approaching.
The girl just shivered.
(???:??So scary, I start to cry. But)
The girl looks up and out the window.
A Magical Meteor was crushing down.
(???: If I behave well, Papa will come get me. I always believed so??)

Anderdezun, the Royal Capital.
Sounds of bells resound. The Alarm bells.
Magical Meteors were raining down on the walled Metropolis.
From a gigantic tower topping the Royal Capital??the Holy Army City Defense Tower, three three-dimensional Magic Formations take on cannon-like shapes.
????: Deployment of the interception technique complete.?
They planned to shoot through the magical Meteor and smash it into pieces through the ?Explosive Magic Flame Cannon{Volks}?, which fires flame projectiles from the turrets of its magic formations.
????: Damn huge. Talk about a fruitless endeavor.?
Said a Magician while looking at the descending giant magical meteors.
He is tall; clad in a pure white robe, with an old wooden staff in his hand. Silver hair and golden eyes. His face is so innocent that he could be mistaken for a boy. But in actuality, he is over twenty years old.
The name of that man: Ein Schubert.
A First-Class Magician.
§ § §
Holy Army City Defense Tower.
In its interior, large mirrors for distant views are laid out in a circle. The mirrors clearly projected the various districts of the royal capital and the currently looming huge Magical Meteor.
?Magician 1: All shots have made contact.?
?Magician 2: The magical Meteor Ansuzu is unscathed. It’s too big!?
The voices of the Magicians trying to shoot down the magical Meteor flutter about.
?Magician 3: Beginning the incitement of the technique.?
?Magician 4: Don’t! It won’t work!?
?Magician 5: The 4th layer of the magic barrier has been breached!?
?Captain: Increase the barrier strength around the shelter area!?
?Magician 5: But, the impact area would be too thinned out!?
?Captain: The evacuation alarm has been rung! It’s no man’s land!?
The Magician hold their breath at their captain’s decision.
They planned to discard the area where the magical meteor descended, and strengthen the other barriers.
And it was the most efficient choice they could have made.
§ § §
Royal Hines Orphanage.
A small girl of about five or six years old is sitting absentmindedly on the floor.
Maybe it was due to the chaos that the adults could not keep an eye on the girl, who had no clue of what was transpiring.
A roar that cut through the wind resounded, and the outside of the window lit up.
She looks up at the sky through the window.
In her eyes, a falling Magical Meteor was reflected.
Right after that, the Magical Meteor mercilessly crashes into the orphanage, blowing up the fragments of the building in all directions.
However, it stopped right there.
????:?Relative Time-Out{Rezun Neze}??
The one who appeared there is Ein Schubert.
?Ein: Magical Disasters aren’t in our jurisdiction. The Ministry of Magic wouldn’t compensate me for lifesaving mana.?
He clicks his tongue as he mumbles.
He continues to walk flatly, passing by the debris suspended in mid-air.
The three-dimensional magic formation he had deployed encompassed the entire orphanage site in a spherical shape.
All the fragments from the exploded building were unnaturally suspended in mid-air, and the flickering flames and plumes of smoke stopped as if they were solid.
Ein takes out a picture from his robe.
A little girl was on it.
?Ein: But how come she was too late in escaping after the alarm bells rang? Hopping she ain’t got shit for brains.?
Inside the space where time has stopped, he goes to the center of the orphanage that had exploded.
He arrived at a room where the magical meteor had opened a large hole.
There was a little girl slumped on the floor.
?Ein: Shannon right??
Ein calls her name.
Then she quietly lifted her face and directed her round blue eyes at him. Her long light pink hair swayed gently.
?Ein: I’ve come to get you. From today on, I’m your father. Already got permission from the orphanage.?
Shannon’s eyes widen.
Gradually, tears welled up in those eyes of hers and dripped onto the floor.
?Ein: Why are you crying? You’ve got nothing to worry about anymore obviously.?
Ein had said so, but Shannon cried even more.
(…Why’s she crying? This is why children are so…)
With a puzzled expression on his face, Ein contemplated for a while. There was no end in sight to Shannon’s crying. He crouched down.
?Ein: You like fireworks??
Then Shannon wiped away her tears and looked back at Ein’s face.
?Shannon: Fireworksh…??
With a gloating grin, Ein suddenly lifted her up. He points his staff at the suspended magical meteor.
?Ein:?Relative Time-Reversal{Rezun Esque}??
When he illustrates two clock-shaped magic formations with his staff, its second hand moves counterclockwise.
Afterwards, the magical meteor that had sunk into the ground surfaces, and the fragments of the scattered orphanage returns.
As if only the time of the orphanage and the Magical Meteor had been reversed, the building was quickly restored, and the magical meteor stopped far above ground.
?Shannon: Sky.?
The Magical Meteor turns into light and scattered.
Vivid fireworks akin to a large waterfall of light bloomed in the night sky.
?Shannon: Taamayaa.?{1}
Shannon’s blue eyes sparkle as she looks up through the window while being held by Ein.
She was looking at it with a wide smile on her face, as if all the tears she had just shed were blown away.
§ § §
?Shannon: Do it again!?
Shannon is lowered to the ground; her eyes blazing as she pleads.
?Ein: I used the Magical Meteor as raw material for the fireworks. So ask me all you want; I can’t.?
Ein explains calmly.
?Shannon: Raw materal??
She asks; jumping up and down.
?Ein: That’s right.?
?Shannon: Another magic meteror??
?Ein: Meteors are considered to be disasters. There’s no telling when it’d come again.?
?Shannon: Shannon knows. Devil’s…!?
Startled, Shannon covers her mouth with her hand.
?Ein: What??
(If he find out about devil, he’ll throw me away. But, fireworksh!)
Ein is suspicious of her.
Shannon pondered, and then it hit her.
She flashed Ein a piece sign.
?Shannon: Shannon will become raw materal!?
?Ein: You’ll die.?
?Shannon: It’s okay. Shannon’s tough.?
Saying that, Shannon clenched her fists and puffed out her chest.
?Ein: If you were to turn into fireworks, how could you watch??
When she finally came to her senses, she had a disappointed look on her face.
?Shannon:… No fireworksh??
Seeing Shannon discouraged, Ein recoiled slightly.
?Ein: Well… some Magical Meteors fell on the Royal Capital. If I use them…?
Breaking off there, Ein sharpens his gaze.
He heard footsteps.
Followed by a loud and echoing voice.
????: Attention Mage in the orphanage. This is the Royal Capital Anderdezun Holy Army City Defense Corps. We have confirmed the use of magic in a magic prohibited zone. Move out immediately and disclose your magic certificate!?
?Ein: Wait.?
After telling Shannon that, Ein left the orphanage.
The city defence mages are lined up in an arc. They were wary of him.
?Ein: I’m part of the ministry of magic. A child had failed to escape so I took them into my custody.?
As he said this, Ein draws letters in the air with his fingertips.
When a parchment was materialised by magic, he handed it over to a City Defense Mage who had stepped forward. The mystic eyes of the mage are shining, and they confirm the magic certificate.
?Mage 1: Apologies. First-Class Magician, Sir Ein Schubert. Thank you very much for your cooperation.?
The Mages lift their magical barriers, as though their guard is down.
Ein turned around to the entrance of the orphanage and saw Shannon peeking in.
Her eyes sparkled even more than when she saw the fireworks.
(First clash magishan, so smart!!)
She seemed to have an admiration for the Magician.
?Ein: Come. I can guarantee you a better life than at the orphanage.?
When Ein said so, Shannon came rushing over and happily clung to his leg.
Ein’s expression is dubious, not understanding why she did that.
?Mage 2: Sir Ein, pardon me, but where are you taking that child??
A Mage from the City Defense Corps wondered and inquired about it.
?Ein: She is my responsibility as of today. Permission has been issued.?
Ein wrote letters in the air again and materialized a parchment. It has the signature of the Earl of the House of Lords on it. It was a special permit that allowed him to adopt a child from the orphanage without inspection.
?Mage 2: Indeed.?
Ein tries to walk.
But Shannon remained clinging to his leg.
?Ein: Hey. Ain’t got legs on your own or something??
?Shannon: Noo~oope.?
Saying that, Shannon clings to his leg.
?Mage 1: Huh? This is quite strange.?
The Mage points at the magic certificate of Ein that they had received earlier.
?Mage 1: Look, his degree is blank.?
?Mage 3: I guess he didn’t get it. Would explain why if he didn’t.?
?Mage 4: With the skills he’s got? He’s a magician alright.?
?Mage 5: Gotta have a degree in the first place for magical research to be doable.?
Noticing Ein, the mages hastily shut their mouths.
Then another mage faced down and said, as though recalling.
?Mage 6:… Our Captain once told me that there was a degreeless genius magician in the Ministry of Magic.?
They turned their gaze to the departing Ein.
Translator Notes:
Hey! I’m HeWhoKnowsNothing(mouthful right?) the translator of this adorable series. You can expect consisted updates from me one Wednesdays. Let’s enjoy this journey together guys!
1. Starting of and we’ve already got a mysterious phrase: Tamaya(“probably just the toddler’s gibberish” I thought so too, but it wasn’t!). “Tamaya” is an all-too-famous chant in Japan that you’d often hear at fireworks displays. Interestingly enough, there is another: “Kagiya”. These two phrases were the names of firework makers back in the Edo period. They pretty much competed with the other in the art of fireworks(sounds pretty hilarious not to mention fun.)
