[Vol. 1] Chapter 40: A Strong Appetite for People
As Jessica spoke, she frightened herself with her own words, imagining a girl suddenly frozen in fear in place. However, perhaps having Ifia by her side made the atmosphere less terrifying, or maybe only the part about shedding tears of blood was truly frightening. Consequently, Jessica quickly recovered and continued.
“After that, it seems her eyes completely lost their sight. She’s still undergoing treatment, but according to rumors, the Saint Tiffany’s eyes can’t be healed. Every time she’s seen in the church, she wears white silk to cover her eyes.”
“During church services, the Saint Tiffany always appears, dressed up and seemingly in good spirits.”
“However, according to an unnamed noble who didn’t want to be identified, Saint Tiffany is very dangerous!”
Ifia felt that even if Jessica wasn’t a noble, she could make a living telling stories in the streets. She could earn a lot.
Isn’t she aware of way too many rumors!!!
Also, don’t leave people hanging like this! Now, Ifia is especially curious!
Jessica, seeing Ifia’s eager and joyful expression, skipped over the terrifying part. Now, her storytelling desire became stronger, and she continued with even more enthusiasm.
“I heard that every night in the Saint Tiffany’s room, terrifying screams can be heard. Not like the wails that humans can produce, but more like the roars of demons crawling out of hell!”
“Once, a noble took advantage of the priest’s inattention in the church and secretly approached the Saint Tiffany’s residence. Hiding in a dark corner, he saw a demon!”
At this point, Jessica paused again, attempting to sneak a peek at Ifia’s face, which was filled with both anticipation and impatience, enjoying the satisfaction it brought her.
Unable to bear it any longer, Ifia wore a wry smile on her face—neither amused nor unamused. Instead of resorting to physical action, she used words to strike back, “Jessica, if you pause one more time, I’ll talk bad about you in front of Amelia.”
“!!!”
Sure enough, when Ifia mentioned Amelia, Jessina immediately became obedient.
She didn’t dare to continue leaving people in suspense. “According to the noble’s description, the demon is three meters tall, with long limbs, entirely pitch-black, and the emaciated body reveals rows of ribs. It’s so hideous that just one look could induce nightmares for ten days. It has six rows of densely packed sharp teeth visible when its mouth is open, and the saliva dripping from its mouth corrodes the ground into small pits.”
“And the Saint Tiffany, with her eyes covered by a white silk band, stands in front of the demon. Several church clergy members assist her. They begin a very perilous demon-slaying ritual.”
“The demon is cruel, vicious, and cunning. It seems to know that Saint Tiffany is not easy to deal with, so it turns to attack the other clergy members. With one bite, it can take off a head. In a critical moment, it’s Saint Tiffany who intervenes!”
“She removes the white silk band covering her eyes, and then…”
Jessica paused at this point, her expression filled with frustration. Without waiting for Ifia’s prompting, she spoke again, “The noble said that after Saint Tiffany removed the band, he immediately fainted. When he woke up again, he was already in the church’s resting room.”
“A priest was waiting nearby. When the noble asked about Tiffany and the demon, the priest smiled and said he had just had a dream. The Saint had been in the confession room listening to the faithful’s sorrows.”
“That’s it. No one knows what happened when Saint Tiffany removed the band. It became the most difficult-to-settle gossip in the noble circle!”
After listening, Ifia also nodded in agreement. It felt like reading a novel that was getting exciting, and suddenly the novel concluded with the last line marked ‘End of Part One, Stay Tuned for the Sequel.’ Then, one never knew if they would live long enough to see the publication of the second part.
However, based on Jessica’s detailed description, Ifia thought the demon part was likely fabricated. If an ordinary person encountered a demon, let alone carefully observe it, just not fainting on the spot would be impressive. How could anyone clearly see how many rows of teeth a demon had?
Poor Saint Tiffany, alive but turned into an urban legend.
“It’s precisely because of this incident spreading that the nobles considered it too dangerous to continue seeking blessings and demon exorcism from Saint Tiffany. No one knows if a demon might suddenly pop up. So, they turned to finding alternatives, and that’s when witch divination started to become popular.”
“If I have the chance, I really want to see the eyes of the Saint~”
Jessica embodied what it meant to have a strong appetite for stories. Ifia looked at her eager appearance, reluctant to dampen her enthusiasm. After all, there were no demons in this world. Moreover, the residence of the church’s Saint should not be easily accessible.
As for the noble sneaking near the Saint’s residence, Ifia suspected it was a made-up story, concocted to reasonably lead to the demon’s appearance later on.
Compared to fabricated demons, Ifia thought it was more important to be cautious of those seemingly eccentric people. One never knew when they might stab you with a knife… The recent memory of Medanie, a newly released psychiatric patient, was still vivid in Ifia’s mind!
“Alright, forget about demons. It’s time to accompany me to buy some items.”
Not letting Jessica continue with her imaginative stories, Ifia pulled her out of the divination shop. The two of them then began to stroll around Clifton Street, carefully selecting and finally reserving a batch of kitchen utensils from a reputable blacksmith according to Ifia’s requirements.
Unlike the commonly used flat pans and baking trays in the Sith Empire, the cookware Ifia requested to be custom-made was a wok.
Jessica curiously looked at the blueprint. She gestured at the depth of the wok, feeling somewhat amazed. The cast-iron wok was almost as deep as a soup pot!
She couldn’t help but wonder why Ifia needed such a wok.
Ifia, on the other hand, watched the blacksmith draw the blueprint according to her specifications and felt reassured. She could finally start casting the iron wok according to her plan and would soon be able to showcase her culinary skills!
In addition, Ifia also paid an expedited fee.
She would be able to pick up the wok in two days.
Next, she went to scout at the fresh produce and spice stores, hoping to get the best ingredients when the time came.
Thinking of Amelia’s shocked face when she tasted the dishes, Ifia couldn’t wait. She wished the pot could be completed the same day, and that night, she carried the pot to find Amelia.
With this excited mood, Ifia, accompanied by Jessica, strolled until the afternoon, ending the excursion when Jessica became too tired.
When Ifia returned to the dormitory, her roommate Irene was nowhere to be found, which relieved Ifia. Since she claimed the top spot in the class and George was expelled from the academy, Irene hadn’t confronted her.
Even in the dormitory, Irene smiled and congratulated her on winning the championship. Her friendly attitude seemed unchanged.
However, the more this happened, the more alert it made Ifia. Yet, the useless system couldn’t provide spoilers, and she couldn’t change dormitories. Ifia could only temporarily adapt to the situation, wait for whatever Irene had in mind, and be ready to counteract.
Nevertheless, compared to guarding against the potential mischief of the female lead, winning Amelia’s favor was the real priority!
‘Meow!’
Just as Ifia felt tired and thought of lying down on her bed, a familiar and pitiful cat’s meow sounded from outside the window. Accompanied by the sound of gentle taps on the glass, Ifia couldn’t help but feel puzzled. How did Amelia’s cat get here?
