[Vol. 2] Chapter 12: Man and Sheep

For the Church’s Saint Tiffany, Ifia had heard about her for a long time. After all, there were countless urban legends surrounding Saint Tiffany, and the stories kept spreading, making her almost turn into a mythical figure with three heads and six arms, capable of shooting lasers from her eyes to annihilate demons.

Therefore, Ifia was very curious about Saint Tiffany, and now unexpectedly, she could finally catch a glimpse of her true appearance! This made Ifia inexplicably excited, quickly following the direction pointed by Jessica’s finger, only to see a white figure approaching.

The church’s clothing style was old-fashioned and conservative, not particularly attractive. However, when worn by Saint Tiffany, it gave a sense of purity and sanctity with every move she made. Her face, how to describe it, gave off an impression of dignified grace. Soft features without sharpness, a faint expression that lacked the warmth of mundane life.

At the same time, a white silk band embroidered with gold thread covered her eyes, concealing the imperfection. There was a tragic beauty in her appearance, as if falling from a high place in the white moonlight.

Ifia instinctively held her breath, feeling that even one more glance would be disrespectful. Wow, indeed a saint, truly awe-inspiring! Not only Ifia was shocked, but even Jessica, who was usually noisy, became quiet. In the midst of the silence, Saint Tiffany accurately turned her head towards their direction, suddenly smiling and nodding as if greeting them.

Then, under the guidance of the accompanying clergy, Saint Tiffany turned her head back, gradually walking away from their gaze. It was only when her figure disappeared that a relieved sigh was heard.

“Oh my, it’s the first time I’ve seen the Saint, it’s truly wonderful!”

“Yes, when she looked at me just now, I didn’t dare to breathe.”

“If I could work with Lady Saint, I would be willing to go to the front hall!”

“What wishful thinking! The clergy at the church rarely get to work with Saint Tiffany. Only dedicated personnel responsible for her care can accompany her.”

Soon, on the way back to the dormitory, the atmosphere in the group became lively again. Among them, Jessica was particularly excited. She squinted her reddish-brown eyes, revealing a bright smile that seemed somewhat lecherous, giving off an uncomfortable feeling no matter how you looked at it. This made Lucy quickly change her position, keeping a safe distance from Jessica to avoid being accidentally harmed by friendly fire.

Even Ifia, who was close, wanted to move away but was too late. She was directly grabbed by Jessica’s arm, who began excitedly talking about her plan, “Ifia, I’ve decided! During these ten days of interning at the church, I’m going to seize every opportunity to uncover the truth about Saint Tiffany and the demons!”

Hearing this, Ifia extended her index finger and tapped Jessica’s forehead, pushing her head a bit away. Just judging from the clergy’s unfavorable attitudes, it would be better for Jessica not to provoke them. However, even with advice, she probably wouldn’t listen.

“I can only remind you gently, Jessica, have you ever thought that our work is different from the Saint’s, and we have no intersections in various aspects? How are you planning to investigate?”

“Don’t tell me you’re going to sneak around the Saint’s residence secretly. That would be an invasion of privacy, and the church people will catch you, report you to the Imperial City Police, and then enjoy a few days in prison.”

Having her enthusiasm dampened by Ifia’s words, Jessica pouted in frustration, but then expressed her determination not to give up. In response, Ifia could only wish her success and remind her not to take any crooked paths.

When they returned to the dormitory later, Ifia quickly finished her hygiene routine. The exhaustion from the day’s work made her instantly fall into a deep sleep once she lay on the bed.

When she opened her eyes again, it was already the next day. Jessica and Lucy envied Ifia’s excellent sleep, despite changing their places, they couldn’t sleep well and barely managed to fall asleep in the late night.

The price of staying up late was fatigue. After washing up with a lack of energy, they changed into the black nun outfits exclusive to clergy, making them look decent.

Ifia, somewhat surprised, lowered her head to look at the nun outfit. Then she glanced at herself in the mirror, suddenly feeling like she was participating in some sort of role-playing.

“Oh my, Ifia, you look stunning in this outfit, front and back~”

As Ifia looked at herself in the mirror, Jessica, who had finished washing up, also became lively.

She clicked her tongue a couple of times, playfully circled around Ifia, then raised her thumb in admiration, giving her full praise, “If Miss Barlen sees you like this, she would be surprised!”

“Enough chatter. Now that we’re done, let’s hurry up and go for a meal!”

In response to Jessica’s sharp tongue, Ifia raised her hand to tap her forehead, then quickly pushed and shoved Jessica and Lucy towards the church’s cafeteria!

However, deep down, Ifia was silently contemplating whether Amelia would be genuinely surprised to see her in a nun’s outfit. Unfortunately, she could only wear this inside the church. If someone who is not a clergy member forges the attire, it’s a violation of imperial law and would result in imprisonment.

Later, the group quickly finished their meal in the cafeteria and immediately split up. When Ifia and the others arrived at the confession room in the side hall, a priest was already waiting. He glanced at them impassively, said few words, and disbanded their trio, reorganizing them.

Due to their intern status, their role was rather auxiliary. Their primary function was to stand behind the priest and assist with serving tea and water. Sometimes, when the priest had matters to attend to outside, they also had to take turns standing guard for a while.

Ifia wasn’t someone to willingly endure hardship, so when they entered the confessor’s exclusive room, she directly fetched a wooden chair. If she wasn’t afraid of being scolded by the priest, she might have even considered bringing some melon seeds and beverages. After all, that’s the correct way to enjoy gossip!

Facing Ifia’s laziness, the priest in her group didn’t intervene. As soon as the two entered the confessor’s exclusive room, they immediately started taking the first set of confessions for the day.

“Father, I have sinned!”

There was a small window between the exclusive room and the outside world. The penitent would extend their hand through it, tightly grasped by the priest. This act was ostensibly to provide the strength of faith, assisting the individual in confessing the most difficult secrets in their hearts.

At this moment, the priest firmly held the believer’s hand and spoke with solemnity, “Lost child, please confess your sins. God will forgive you.”

Ifia sat in the back, moving her chair and watching with curious eyes.

The penitent did not hesitate for too long, they immediately revealed their secret, “I am in the prime of my life, but I am not interested in women. My family constantly pressures me to marry a beautiful and graceful lady. My resistance has been ignored, and they have even arranged an engagement for me.”

Oh my!

So explosive right from the start?

Ifia’s eyes gleamed, and her ears perked up.

The priest holding the hand remained unchanged in expression, as calm as an old monk in meditation. In an unwavering tone, he continued, “Is it that you don’t like women, and you feel guilty about your future wife because you are being forced into marriage?”

“No.”

“My family is wealthy. As long as she marries me, she can enjoy a luxurious life. I have nothing to apologize to her for.”

“I just feel guilty towards the lovely Mary. She is so pure and kind, looking at me with those beautiful pink eyes every time. She’s so adorable and makes me like her a lot!”

“When it gently nudges me with its horns, I can’t help but be overwhelmed each time, only finding satisfaction after experiencing joy together.”

???

Listening to this, Ifia was shocked, her mouth hanging open in disbelief. So, the “Mary” in this man’s story is a sheep?

The priest remained calm, as if he had experienced many things and wasn’t surprised. He consoled the man with a compassionate voice, “Lost one, you have been entangled by a demon. You must sever the connection with Mary as soon as possible, or the demon will erode your mind and body, turning you into a walking corpse.”

“Sob, Father, I can’t bear to part with Mary!”

Later, as the man sobbed and narrated the heart-wrenching love story between him and Mary, Ifia didn’t know what to say anymore. Such diversity in species! The matter of a man being involved romantically with a sheep was too shocking.

Until the morning work session ended, Ifia left the confessional in a daze. When she met up with Lucy on the way to the cafeteria, her face still bore the expression of lifelong shock.

On the way to the cafeteria, Jessica curiously looked at Ifia, “Ifia, how was your morning work? I’ve been hearing about trivial matters for half a day, it’s so boring!”

“Over here, I encountered a man cheating on his wife with another woman, attempting to seek forgiveness from the gods for his marital infidelity.”

Subsequently, without hiding anything, Ifia told her friends about the bizarre relationship. After hearing the story of the man and the sheep, Lucy and Jessica had the same dazed expression on their faces. Even after finishing their meal in the cafeteria, they still hadn’t fully recovered from the shock of this heart-shaking secret.

“You two finished work so quickly!”

Just as the three were about to exchange some thoughts, Arlan and the others walked into the cafeteria at that moment. While Antoine and the others went to get their food, Arlan stayed behind to wait, coincidentally joining the conversation with Jessica and her friends.

“Is the work in the back hall not busy? Why did you all come to the cafeteria so late?”

“Don’t mention it. Those nuns were dissatisfied with the lottery results and deliberately used their means to increase our workload. If it weren’t for the fact that it’s already mealtime, we wouldn’t be off duty yet! We envy you for going to the back hall, having less contact with them.”

From Arlan’s sarcastic remarks, it was clear that the clergy members were indeed going too far. In response, Jessica could only pat Arlan on the shoulder, urging her to endure for ten days. Arlan, not wanting to release too much negativity, quickly changed the subject. They left when Antoine and the others finished their meal.

The three of them placed their trays back and returned to the dormitory for a brief nap. The afternoon would continue with work.

As Ifia lay down, trying to clear the image of the man and the sheep from her mind, the dormitory window was suddenly knocked from the outside. Accompanied by a familiar and miserable cat’s cry, Ifia’s eyes lit up!
