[Vol. 3] Chapter 18: Everyone Goes to Pick Up Trash
The crew’s exclamation was loud, accompanied by a series of gasps that piqued everyone’s curiosity. What had they discovered while salvaging the sunken pirate ship?
In such a lively atmosphere, it was only natural to have the gossip enthusiast Ifia. Her black eyes gleamed, and she immediately grabbed Amelia’s hand, excitedly shaking it.
“Amelia, quickly, quickly, there’s something interesting to see!”
Amelia was well aware of Ifia’s excitement and didn’t refuse her request. With Ifia’s eager expression, they walked together towards the salvaging area.
However, Ifia was still a step behind, and Jessica had already occupied the best viewing spot in advance.
“Ifia, Miss Barlen, over here, over here!”
Seeing Ifia just arriving, Jessica quickly raised her hand to beckon, urging her to come over. This visit to the new route had truly been an experience of everything.
When they return to the Sith Empire, Jessica was determined to regale her close friends with tales of the thrilling voyage, an experience not for the faint of heart.
However, as soon as the name “Barlen” was shouted, it immediately attracted the attention of the people nearby. The nobles and servants on the deck earlier didn’t represent everyone on the ship. Some had been hiding in their rooms or elsewhere, only coming out after hearing the news of the pirates’ defeat.
Later, upon hearing the crew members’ screams of surprise, others immediately came over to see what was happening. Some people, upon seeing Amelia Barlen, were quite puzzled about why members of the Barlen family were here. According to convention, Barlen family members should be on their exclusive ship, not this passenger ship. Nevertheless, being able to see the only direct bloodline of the Barlen family here was indeed fortunate!
However, due to the aloof expression on Amelia Barlen’s face, others dared not approach her to talk. They could only silently observe while wondering who the girl standing next to the Duke’s daughter was. They seemed very close.
Also, the noble girl waving at Amelia Barlen, isn’t she the daughter of the Lilace family? When did the Barlen family and Lilace family become so close?
The nobles observing this scene launched into a brainstorm, but the three at the center of the storm, Amelia, Ifia, and Jessica, paid it no mind. Amelia and Ifia were accustomed to it, while Jessica was very self-aware and didn’t let the attention affect her. She was just an accessory in this situation.
Because of her friendship with Ifia, Jessica had the opportunity to converse with Miss Barlen. This was already a great opportunity, and being dissatisfied would be too greedy! Jessica was quite content.
“Jessica, what did the crew salvage?” As soon as Ifia approached Jessica, she immediately asked with curiosity. However, Jessica didn’t provide an answer. Instead, she gestured with her chin towards the underwater area, asking Ifia to be patient. “Just wait and see! The crew initially brought that thing to the surface, but because they were too surprised, it fell back into the sea. This time, they should be able to pull it up successfully.”
While Jessica kept the suspense, the crew, red-faced and shouting slogans, exerted all their strength to finally hoist something from the sea. When the remnants of the sunken ship were placed on the deck, Ifia became even more puzzled. It was just a damaged piece of wood… What on earth was this!
“Ah, Amelia, what is that? It’s so terrifying!” Ifia took a quick glance and was immediately frightened, letting out a startled cry. She hurriedly dove into Amelia’s arms like an ostrich.
No wonder Ifia was scared and huddled like a frightened chick, among the salvaged wreckage of the sunken ship was a grotesque and decomposed body that had been dead for a while.
With heavy chains bound around the neck and both hands, it seemed to be a measure to prevent escape. If it were just that, it wouldn’t be shocking. The main surprise came from the lower half of the body of the corpse, which was a mildly decomposed, massive fish tail!
“Oh my, what is this ghostly thing? It’s really frightening.”
“Is this a mermaid?”
“It does look like one. Do such creatures really exist in the world? It’s so miraculous.”
Many people, like Ifia, were shocked, but there were also some courageous individuals. They curiously observed the strange corpse, enduring the pungent odor and visual impact of decomposition, earnestly analyzing the authenticity of the huge fish tail.
It was different from an ordinary fish. The lines of this fish tail were smoother, as if two legs were fused together, covered with a thin layer of membranous fish scales, facilitating movement in the sea.
As people were full of curiosity, Amelia raised her hand and patted Ifia’s back. Regarding this cute little one with a strong appetite for novelty, Amelia couldn’t help feeling a mix of amusement and exasperation. She glanced at the wreckage of the sunken ship, her purple eyes calm. She wasn’t surprised at the mermaid corpse in the sea. However, the fact that this mermaid was captured by pirates showed a remarkable level of foolishness.
Generally, mermaids bewitch humans with their voices and then devour them. Even if discovered, they can escape unharmed because the sea is their domain.
“Make way, Captain Kosev is here!”
While the mermaid corpse sparked discussions among the people, Captain Kosev, whose steps were delayed by the nobles, finally rushed over. Upon hearing the crew describe the appearance of the mermaid, he was so shocked that he ignored the nobles and hurriedly ran, now panting heavily.
When he raised his head and saw the highly decomposed corpse in the wreckage of the sunken ship, Captain Kosev felt his vision go black, almost fainting on the spot. It was indeed a mermaid!
These pirates must be crazy! As a seasoned sailor with over twenty years of experience at sea, Captain Kosev knew the ferocity of mermaids, especially their penchant for consuming…
The voices of mermaids carried a certain special ability, capable of luring humans into uncontrollable behavior. Once targeted by these troublesome creatures, even if one was peacefully asleep at night, they could unknowingly be enticed by their singing. Subsequently, it was like falling into a trap – queueing up to jump into the sea, becoming a delicacy in the bellies of the mermaids.
The fact that pirates dared to capture such ancestral beings was truly exasperating!
Even if they weren’t killed by Miss Barlen’s cannon, they would face the relentless retaliation of the mermaids.
“What are you all standing there for? Quickly throw this thing back into the sea. If you pick up anything and everything, what kind of sailors are you? You might as well become garbage collectors in the future!”
Captain Kosev, considering the ferocity of the mermaids, felt like his heart was about to stop. He then looked at the crew members standing dumbfounded on the side and immediately roared in anger.
Startled, the crew members quickly realized the situation and hurriedly used tools to lift the wreckage of the sunken ship and return it to the sea. With a “splash,” water splashed up, and the wreckage quickly disappeared.
Without saying anything more, Captain Kosev hurriedly turned back to the helm, preparing to accelerate and quickly navigate through this dangerous area. Who knows if mermaids have some special sensitivity among themselves? If trouble comes to their fleet later because of this corpse, it would be truly unjust!
Captain Kosev came and went in a hurry, but the crew members left behind began to discuss.
“Pirates actually dare to capture mermaids, they are a bunch of lunatics!”
“I’ve been at sea with the ship for so many years, and it’s the first time I’ve seen a mermaid.”
“Encountering mermaids is not a good thing, they are not to be trifled with. Meeting them could cost you your life!”
When Ifia heard Captain Kosev’s command, she had already snapped out of her shock and fear. Sneakily, she poked her head out from Amelia’s embrace and managed to take a few more glances at the scene.
How should she express this!
The highly decomposed mermaid didn’t reveal much about its appearance in life, but the tail showed only mild decay. Some of the blue scales that hadn’t fallen off sparkled in the sunlight. After seeing the mermaid corpse, Ifia couldn’t help but start questioning whether her previous understanding of the world was correct. Perhaps, even in her past life in the modern world, there were mermaids hidden in the sea. Earth, aside from humans, might have other hidden species cleverly avoiding humans, like beings concealed in the darkness. Of course, it’s also possible that the world in this book is different from reality.
“Are you still scared?”
While Ifia was lost in these thoughts, she suddenly heard Amelia’s concerned question, snapping her back to reality. She shook her head toward Amelia. She was initially terrified at first glance, but afterward, she felt numb to it and even had the mental capacity to think about other things.
In just two days of travel on the fleet’s new route, so much had happened. Ifia wondered what else awaited them in the future. Hopefully, everything would go smoothly!
Perhaps Ifia’s prayers had truly worked. Over the next month of sailing on the sea, there were no more strange or dangerous incidents. They peacefully sailed across the azure sea, and soon they would reach their destination, the Taric Kingdom.
In the early morning, amidst the mist over the sea, Ifia and Jessica stood behind the ship’s railing, gazing at the blurry silhouette of distant buildings. As the fleet sailed forward rapidly, the silhouette gradually became clearer.
Compared to the intricate and splendid architecture of the Sith Empire, the style of Taric Kingdom appears more rugged and wild. Just looking at it gives the impression that these buildings are all very large!
As the ship approached the harbor, with the vessels getting closer, discernible figures could be seen, and it seemed like there were quite a few onlookers.
“Ifia, come over here. We’re about to disembark.” Just as Ifia was eager to see what the people of Taric Kingdom looked like, Amelia’s voice echoed nearby. Upon hearing it, Ifia quickly grabbed Jessica and ran over.
Ifia hadn’t forgotten Jessica’s briefing: the people of Taric Kingdom preferred using their fists to communicate. With her petite stature, she wouldn’t last in a few punches! It’s safer to stick close to Amelia.
However, before Ifia could bring Jessica closer to Amelia, Austin emerged seemingly out of nowhere, reaching out to grab Jessica’s arm. He then smiled at Ifia.
“Miss Barlen has too many people to attend to. Jessica, stay by my side!”
Austin’s words made sense and were convincing, making it difficult for anyone to intervene. Immediately, with Jessica pouting and looking somewhat aggrieved, Austin, as if picking up a little chicken, took her away.
Already standing by Amelia’s side, holding hands with her, Ifia looked at them with a hint of concern. She wondered about Austin’s combat skills. Since she was confident enough to take Jessica with her, Austin probably had some martial prowess!
Just then, there was a ‘thud’ as the ship docked at the harbor. It was time for them to disembark!
