~End of chapter 118

After eating meat with a salty flavor and a few juicy and plump fruits, she was very satisfied.

Xiao Hei who had been hiding behind the stone platform nibbling on his own loot now walked up to Mu Qing’s side, sticking out his tongue to lick the juice of the fruits that flowed down from her fingers.

It was most likely thirsty from eating too much salted fish, so Mu Qing simply gave a a large fruit and let it nibble on it and play with it.

Chapter 119

(37.4)

The light from the torch was gradually getting dimmer. Li Mang stood up.

He couldn’t rest just now. He hadn’t finished digging that trench. He had to finish digging it today, so that tomorrow, he could go out hunting as early as possible to start preparing for the first long winter since she got with him. They didn’t have much time left.

Mu Qing stayed by his side the whole time, she tried to do something to help him, but he wouldn’t let her. She could only sit on the edge and hum a song for him.

When the moon was hanging in the middle of the sky, he was finished digging the wide and deep trench. Tomorrow early in the morning, he would insert short poles made of bone with sharp ends at the bottom and then lay a camouflage on top of the trench, so that even if something mistakenly entered the vicinity, he wouldn’t have to worry about that thing climbing up the trench and coming to hurt Mu Qing.

Both of them embraced each other and slept very deeply this night.

Early the next morning, after setting up the traps, Li Mang took his bow and arrows, a sharp spear, and a few pieces of roasted meat that she placed in the leather pouch on his waist, and went out to hunt.

Mu Qing and Xiao Hei accompanied him all the way to the trench with the traps. She stuffed the knife into the leather pouch at his waist and watched him as he stepped on the ladder that was set on top of the trapped trench, she then removed the ladder and hid it, and then his tall figure disappeared around the corner of the mountain wall.

A knife this small might not be of much help to him during hunting, but its advantage was in how sharp it was. She just wished she could help him a little, when he was out hunting alone, for he didn’t have partners looking out for him like he used to before.

When she pretended to be calm, telling him not to go too far and to come back early, Li Mang could see a hint of worry hidden in her eyes. But he didn’t say anything, he just rubbed her hair a little harder and nodded at her with a smile.

Li Mang belonged to this jungle since birth, he was the most valiant hunter and warrior in this forest, and so naturally he was this jungle’s favorite son.

That was what she told herself.

Mu Qing exhaled out the anxious air in her chest towards the sky and started her busy day.

The first thing she did was to go to the pool from yesterday and pick up all the fruits that the monkeys had thrown at them because they wanted them to continue, and ended up filling a big bag full of fruits and leaves. Some of them were bruised, but it didn’t matter if they were washed and then turned into dried fruit. There might be fruits in even more abondance outside the valley, but she didn’t dare to venture out. She had better store as much as possible the food she could find here.

It was morning, and the monkeys hadn’t left, it seemed that they were longtime inhabitants of the place. When Mu Qing bent down to pick up the fruits, she startled the monkeys on the dense branches, and they all stretched their heads out again, squeaking and baring their teeth at her, not looking very friendly.

Most likely, they did not welcome her as a new neighbor who had disturbed their peaceful life by arriving here uninvited. But Mu Qing, on the contrary, was happy that she could have such a group of neighbors in the future. At least, when Li Mang was not around, she would feel less lonely hearing their cries, even if they were angry or threatening.

Probably because it was fall, this group of monkeys was very picky, the ground below the branches they were perched on had a lot of dropped fruits, some of them were rotten or had insect bite marks, but most of them seemed to be gnawing marks. She guessed that the monkeys took a bite, and judging that the fruit wasn’t good enough for them, they then dropped it.

At first, she wanted to pick all the fruits up, wash and dry them in the sun, but then she got a little worried that fruits bitten by prehistoric monkeys might carry some strange germs, so although she felt it was a waste, she finally gave up this idea and just went to the side of the lower branches to pick some fruit that she could get access to.
