Ancient Eden - Chapter 139
~End of chapter 138
Li Mang didn’t like it when she spoke about leaving, even though he knew she was only joking.
He was a stubborn piece of wood that couldn’t take a joke.
After this punishment, no matter how stifled and bored she was, she didn’t dare to joke with him like that again. Instead, she asked him to tell her stories.
Only then did she realize that his world turned out to be full of magnificent colors as well.
Chapter 139
Li Mang said that when he was a boy and first went hunting with his father, he learned how to recognize the various kinds of wild fruits that grew in the jungle. At first glance, some of them looked like eggs laid by birds. Really, fruits came in all shapes and colors.
Some of them, when he stepped on them mischievously, the grains would be squeezed out from the ruptured shell, which would hang to his hands with one touch, and they could not be shaken off. Some of them, when eaten, would turn his whole mouth blue, and would not fade away for many days.
The rarest kind he found, was one with a round hole on the top, and when he pinched with his finger underneath, there was be a cluster of white smoke coming out from the round hole. So he secretly picked a big bag of them and brought them back, and when he was in a bad mood or when he couldn’t eat enough and was so hungry it was hard to bear, he made them smoke until they shrunk and crumpled together. But then he was beaten up by his father who saw him by accident, because he thought that wasn’t something a boy should do.
He also said that this valley they were living in now, he had actually visited it once before when he was still a teenager.
It was a place he accidentally discovered when he was traveling all the way east along the Great River with Yi Jia, without the knowledge of their clansmen. They wanted to explore the very end of the Great River. As a result, they found a grassland, past which were mountains, past which was the boundless sea, and no one knew what was beyond the sea.
After that time, he realized that the world was not just the jungle he had always thought it was. The Great River was never ending, and neither did the sea.
He spoke of the scene when he and Yi Jia returned to the settlement and were scolded by the distraught adults, he and Yi Jia both argued that they were the ones who took the initiative and urged the other to leave the group and go out, and as a result, both of them were punished, and were not allowed to eat for three days. Later, when they were too hungry, no longer able to stand it, they secretly caught worms and roasted them for food. Li Mang laughed as if it was a very funny thing.
Mu Qing listened with great interest to him talking about all kinds of exotic animals and plants in the jungle, and within a few days, listening to his stories at night had become an essential step before going to bed.
But soon, all her attention was seized by something else.
When she first arrived here, she had the habit of counting the days every day, to count how many days she had been here. But now she had long since stopped counting. Knowing how many days had passed since she had left her old world no longer meant anything to her.
Being confined in this valley for the winter, she was a little confused about her menstrual days. But, this morning when she got up and went to the outer cave to wash up, she smelled the broth that Li Mang had cooked in a jar after getting up early in the morning and she suddenly felt a wave of nausea rising. She kept retching non-stop, and only when it slowed down did she vaguely remember that it had been some time since she had her last period.
She immediately thought of pregnancy.
Li Mang was outside shoveling snow. The snow that he had shoveled on both sides had piled up so high that it was almost on the same level as the entrance of the cave. Hearing the sounds inside, he hurried inside to see what was going on.
Her ghastly white face startled him and he urgently carried her back to the inner cave and placed her on the couch, wrapping her tightly in the tiger skin and rubbing her cheeks uncontrollably, hoping that they would regain their usual rosy color.
Mu Qing smiled and took his hand down from her face, reassuring him.
She wanted to tell him her suspicions immediately. But when the words reached her tongue, she swallowed them back.
It was better to wait until she was completely sure before letting him know, just in case it wasn’t that, to avoid him being happy for nothing.
