Chapter 74: Skill Shop

Among the rows of brick-built shops, the newly added skill shop stood out.

Several players were already inside, all of them staring intently at the crystals on the shelves.

Since my silver hair is quite noticeable, I pulled my coat’s hood low over my face and entered the shop with my two best friends.

“Welcome!”

We were cheerfully greeted by a girl who looked about in her teens, dressed in a cheongsam, with two horns on her head and a reptilian tail extending from her lower back.

She was of the dragonkin race, a familiar fantasy species known for their high stats and warrior nature.

Incidentally, all the residents of this country are dragonkin, with most of them being level 30 or above.

This girl, too, seemed to be level 33, which is quite high. It would be nearly impossible for an average adventurer to defeat her in battle.

While thinking about this, I nodded politely to her and looked around the shop.

The shop was laid out much like a bookstore.

The shelves were lined with skill crystals (S-Crystals), divided into three categories: attack skills, defense skills, and support skills.

Much like in the real world, you could pick up the items, check their effects, and decide whether to buy them.

Interestingly, there was no register; purchases were made on the spot.

Sora quickly picked up a crystal labeled as a support skill called ?Arms Change? and checked its effects.

?Support Skill: Arms Change?

A skill that allows you to quickly switch between preset weapons by using a shortcut setting.

“Hmm, this is pretty strong. It’s especially useful for players who use two main weapons or when you drop a weapon—you can retrieve it instantly without having to perform a pickup motion.”

I checked the price and saw it was about 50,000 El.

“A support skill at this price, huh…”

Other skills included resistance to various negative statuses, skills to reduce stun time, cooldown reduction skills, and equipment weight reduction skills.

Even just looking at the support skills, there were plenty that caught my interest.

“The last three cost 100,000 each… a total of 300,000 El, but they’re definitely worth buying.”

I opened the purchase screen, completed the transaction, and watched as my El balance decreased, and the purchased items were added to my inventory.

It seems that buying the item doesn’t immediately grant you the skill.

With no more need to browse the support skill shelf, I moved on to the defense skill shelf.

There, I found Rou, who was unusually frowning in deep thought.

“Rou, something wrong?”

“Oh, Sora, you came at the right time. Which of these skills do you think is better?”

“Hmm?”

He handed me the two S-Crystals he was holding, and I checked them out.

The skill in the right hand is the defensive skill ?Immobility?, which allows you to stand firm for 30 seconds, regardless of the terrain, and prevents you from being knocked back or flinching from enemy attacks.

Cooldown: 60 seconds.

The skill in the left hand is the defensive skill ?Brave Mental?, which makes you immune to status ailments for 30 seconds.

Cooldown: 60 seconds.

Both of these skills require 200,000 El, which is a pretty hefty amount.

If you were to choose both, it would cost 400,000 El in total.

That would leave you with only 400,000 El remaining, so Rou probably wants to choose just one.

?Immobility? would be useful for a knight because not being knocked back can be a big advantage.

On the other hand, given how other players besides me struggled immensely against status ailments when facing the ?Leviathan? in the Forest of Spirits, ?Brave Mental?, which nullifies status effects for a certain period, is also highly desirable.

But if I were Rou, I would suggest going with the one in the right hand.

“Why ?Immobility??” Rou asked.

I confidently answered, “Rou, you’re really good at tanking, so being able to hold your ground in unstable terrain would only enhance your strengths.”

“I see… If that’s what you recommend, Sora, I’ll go with it. By the way, I noticed you were checking out the support skill shelf earlier. Did you find anything good?”

“Yeah, I recommend these three.”

I suggested ?Stun Time Reduction?, ?Cooldown Reduction?, and ?Equipment Weight Reduction? skills.

They total 300,000 El, but they’re all worth having.

Since he’s using an M-type avatar, his base carry weight is 400, unlike mine.

If he isn’t struggling with weight limits, he could skip the ?Equipment Weight Reduction? to save some money.

Rou thanked me and made his purchase from the shelf, then headed to the support skill shelf where I had been earlier.

Meanwhile, I checked the defensive skill shelf again and found a skill called ?Sonic Step? that caught my interest.

This skill allows you to instantly move sideways when activated.

While it might not suit Rou’s tanking style, it’s a must-have skill for me as an attacker.

It’s a bit pricey at 100,000 El, but it greatly expands my strategic options, so I bought it without hesitation.

When I moved on to the attack skill shelf, I found Shin, much like Rou earlier, staring intently at a crystal in his hand.

…Now it’s you, huh?

I chuckled and walked over to Shin.

“Hey, what are you debating over?”

“Oh, Sora. I found some interesting attack skills and I’m having a tough time deciding.”

“Let me take a look.”

Shin handed me two crystals, and I checked out the skills.

The crystal in the right hand is an attack skill called ?Drain Angriff?, which absorbs the HP of the opponent you deal damage to.

Cooldown: 20 seconds.

The crystal in the left hand is an attack skill called ?Disable Thrust?, which allows you to perform a piercing attack that nullifies defensive skills.

Cooldown: 20 seconds.

Just like with Rou earlier, these skills have different purposes, and Sora found it hard to choose between them.

Each skill costs 250,000 El, and together they total 500,000 El—a staggering amount.

Both skills are desirable, but if I had to choose one, I would go with ?Disable Thrust?.

“If it were me, I’d pick the skill that nullifies defensive abilities over HP absorption.”

“And why is that?”

“HP absorption seems to depend on the damage you deal, so even if you manage to heal a bit, an enemy’s attack could easily negate it. Considering your player skills, Shin, having an attack that can bypass an enemy’s defensive skills when it really counts could be a game-changer.”

“I see, that’s a good point. I’ll take your advice and go with this one. …By the way, could you recommend some good defensive and support skills too?”

“Sure, in that case—”

Sora recommended four skills that she had chosen himself.

However, they totaled 400,000 El, so if Shin bought them all, he would be left with only 350,000 El.

Shin considered this for a moment, then made his decision. “Alright, I’ve decided. Since I don’t have issues with weight, I’ll go with the step and the two reduction skills.”

“Yeah, if I were a knight-type and had an M-type avatar, I’d make the same choice.”

“Thanks, Sora. I might need to farm some El later, but this will definitely make me stronger.”

Shin thanked her politely and then headed to the defensive skill section.

Meanwhile, I decided to see if there were any good attack skills left.

After a few minutes of searching, I didn’t find anything particularly noteworthy other than the ?Disable Thrust? skill that Shin had been considering.

Most of the skills on the shelf were elemental attack skills, which, as an ?Enchanter?, were unnecessary for me.

Without hesitation, Sora purchased the ?Disable Thrust? and confirmed it with the dragonkin store clerk.

“Excuse me, are all the available skills displayed on these shelves?”

“Yes, that’s correct. Rare skills usually aren’t found in regular stores.”

Hmm, so that means that if it’s not a regular store, they might carry rare skills.

This was valuable information. After thanking the store clerk, Sora rejoined the others, and they exited the store.

Just then,

“Well, if it isn’t the strongest party in Astral Online.”

“Huh?”

We turned toward the voice.

Standing there was Glen, a handsome young man with crimson hair and crimson eyes, looking as impressive as Rou. Glen is the vice-captain of ?Hell and Heaven?, led by Shino, who happens to be my master. He’s a pro gamer who even defeated Shin and Rou when they teamed up against him.

“It must be fate that we’ve met here. How about I treat you all to some tea? My treat.”

He pointed to one of the top-tier cafes in the country.

And since it was “his treat,” there was no reason for us to refuse. We agreed to his proposal in a split second.

After all, no matter how strong we are, we’re still high schoolers.

The words “my treat” are very hard to resist.
