A/N : And so it began.

Reizen’s son has the highest toughness.

I plan to pull out all the settings that were hidden in the previous work and run until the end, so please take care of me.

1-1. Old Memories

*

The oldest memory I remember is my mother crying.

I don’t remember why she was crying.

I did remember that I had asked something that made her cry.

What was it that I asked? I can’t remember, no matter how hard I try. I can’t bring myself to ask now either. I knew that some things are better left alone.

… I periodically recall this. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was being told not to forget.

But I don’t remember what I asked or what I thought. I don’t remember anything about it. But it lingers in the back of my mind.

Let’s think about something else. Maybe I can remember something by retracing my old memories. I tap my head as if to extract memories and recall past events.

… Was that when I was five years old? I remember a time when I went to the mountains with my mother and crossed a bridge. The view from there was beautiful, and even as a small child, I was impressed.

So, I got too excited and… The handrail made of ropes on the suspension bridge was easy for a child to pass through. So, I stepped out and fell from the bridge. It was a relatively new bridge, but the handrail was made for adults, not children.

And so, I fell headfirst into the ravine. My mother’s voice faded in the distance, but strangely, I didn’t feel scared. It might have been a strange story from the beginning, but I was enjoying the sensation of floating at that time. So, I hit the ground headfirst. I bounced a few times, but I got up immediately and laughed.

The sensation of floating and the way the view bounced around as I hit the ground. It was really interesting at the time.

After that, my mother came to pick me up right away. She was in a panic, but I remember saying, “One more time!” and causing trouble for my mother. Normally, if someone falls from that height, they would die.

I didn’t understand that until two days after the incident. I wanted to do the same thing again, so this time, I went into the forest without telling my mother. Well, kids can be reckless sometimes, you know? It’s not that they’re just innocent… They just don’t think much about life. So, I wanted to enjoy that floating sensation together and caught a squirrel that was nearby.

You can probably guess what happened next without me explaining. When I reached the suspension bridge, I threw the squirrel and then jumped, enjoying the same floating sensation as the other day. After bouncing a few times at the bottom of the ravine, I started looking for the squirrel to see what happened to it. The squirrel’s insides were splattered, its flesh stuck to the ground, and its body was mangled with red blood splattered everywhere.

“?”

At that time… I couldn’t understand that the squirrel had died. But it started to look disgusting, and I didn’t want to keep looking at the squirrel that had stopped moving, so I ran away.

It was quite scary.

But thanks to that, I realized that my body was different from animals.

There were other things, but let’s start with that. The story of when I was little. And a reflection on what has brought me to this point.

***

As he searched for memories in his mind, he added more firewood to the campfire in front of him.

The night was cold and very chilling.

However, he could hardly sense even that feeling. He continued to light the fire for the person sleeping next to him.

This is deep in the mountains, far from his hometown. It’s a dangerous area with many beasts and monsters, but that’s why it’s perfect for hiding.

He thrust the knife he held in his hand into his arm with all his might.

However, the blade did not go through; instead, it chipped. He looked at his unscathed hand and sighed softly.

He threw the knife away and began to remember the past while looking at the campfire again.

“Why did it turn out like this…”

First, he wanted to remember how it had come to this. To talk about it, he had to recall memories from his childhood.
