1-10. About Skills

Skills are the lost magic.

At some point, something disappeared, and skills and statuses vanished. Those who originally possessed them continued to have skills, but Oni, Humans, and many other races born after that ‘something’ disappeared could no longer possess skills.

Or rather… it might be better to say they could no longer obtain them.

Skills, from the beginning, were dangerously powerful magic created by that ‘something.’ Simply by possessing them, one could easily use attacks and magic, even if they were children, tiny mice, or fish that lived in the water.

In this world, instead of skills, research in magic is advancing. Certain devils left behind magic that is still being studied and evolving among many races. Sometimes, these magics surpass skills and elevate magic users to possess powerful abilities.

Magic is not something that can be obtained easily now. It needs to be studied, honed, and manifested through one’s own power. Of course, the barrier of talent is not easily overcome, but with effort, one can acquire skills that surpass it. Everyone has the right to study magic equally, and magic responds.

But it’s not just magic.

Even swordsmanship can now enable one to use skills similar to magic through training. Skills have divided into swordsmanship and magic. Both have become harder to obtain, but they have not been completely lost.

So, what is the difference between skills and these new abilities? If similar abilities can be acquired through effort, there should be no problem, right? Calling them ‘Lost Skills’ seems a bit too dramatic.

However, there is a significant difference.

Let’s say a person with a skill and someone who acquired a skill through effort both have the same ? Rock Smash?  magic. When the skill user punches a rock, the rock is shattered easily. Skills are about ‘reproducing’ the ability. Even if the proficiency level is zero, it has already reached a level that can be used in combat.

Now, what happens when someone who worked hard to acquire ? Rock Smash?  uses it? Most people would not be able to shatter even a rock half their size. At best, they can make a crack.

This is the biggest difference. Skills can also provide unknown abilities and teach how to use them. In a world where statuses are lost, and skills are no longer obtained, skills are inherited or created by oneself, and one has to learn how to use them from someone else or figure it out themselves.

“…Well, that’s about it for skills. Did you understand?”

“Hmm…”

Uchikage-Ojichan’s explanation was quite challenging. But he used an analogy, and I think I somewhat understood it.

In other words, skills are amazing. Swordsmanship and magic are not quite as amazing, but if you work hard, you can become really amazing. That’s probably how it goes. Skills are amazing without needing to work hard, right?

Mom, who had been watching silently, gave a small smile. Uchikage-Ojichan seemed a bit worried.

“I see. Well then, Yuuzen, from tomorrow, you’ll be training your skills with Grandpa.”

“I’ll do my best!”

“Good. …You don’t mind staying at my mansion from now on, do you, Yuuzen?”

“I don’t mind! …I’m scared if I can’t control it, so I’ll do my best.”

“Alright, then. Yuuzen, from today, you’ll be staying at my place.”

“Okay!”
