5-27. Inside the Church

“Excuse us!!”

“B-but—”

Bang!!

The door flew off its hinges with a loud crash, the metal fittings shattered, and the door clattered noisily to the ground. There was no way anyone could ignore such a sound. I braced for someone to come running, but no matter how long we waited, the silence remained unbroken.

Raising my head, I realized the church was completely dark. Even when I tried to sense any presence, I felt nothing. It seemed Amariaz had already figured this out.

Well, I was overwhelmed by the fleeing people’s presence, making it hard to distinguish specifics… But once inside, it became clear. There was truly no one here. That meant we could investigate without interruptions.

… Ugh, this feels like burglary.

Amariaz used her ‘Spatial Awareness’ ability to survey the surroundings. He could detect inorganic objects too, making him quite adept at investigating. However, detailed searches took time. While he worked, I kept watch, ensuring no one would surprise us.

“Is that the carriage Ouren mentioned? And the warehouse is… here.”

“How does it look?”

“Found it. Lots of bombs. There are some documents over there, let’s go check them out.”

“Got it.”

Our footsteps echoed through the empty church as we ran. The place was surprisingly large, even more so from the inside, adorned with grand chandeliers and opulent candelabras lining the hallways, indicating significant wealth.

Given that angels had been present here, there was a high chance of finding clues connecting to the Four Heavens Church. Hoping to find such clues, we opened the door to the room Amariaz had indicated.

Indeed, the room was filled with stacks of documents. There were also boxes containing bombs. It was puzzling why they were here, but Amariaz speculated they intended to blow up this place as well. Regardless of the truth, the bombs were too dangerous to leave lying around, so I stored them in my magic bag.

Fearless, huh?

Looking around, it was clear that examining each document would take too long. Taking everything back might be the better option. As I considered this, Amariaz began stuffing documents into his magic bag.

“Hey!?”

“What?”

“Is that okay!?”

“We don’t have time to go through them here.”

I had thought the same, but…! Ugh, why am I feeling so conflicted about this? Whatever. I’ll let Amariaz handle the documents and search elsewhere.

I wandered around the room, checking it thoroughly. Besides the documents, nothing seemed noteworthy.

“Hmm…”

Nothing at all. Shouldn’t there be a room for higher-ups? I bet we’d find better information there.

Focusing, I tried to sense my surroundings. Though not as skilled as Uchikage-Ojiichan, I could manage.

“…?”

I felt something at my feet. Thanks to my ‘Blessing of the Earth,’ I was sensitive to such vibrations. Frowning, I tried to identify the source. It wasn’t like the impact of an explosion. It felt more like a ripple in a puddle after a drop of water fell.

This ripple moved through the room, gathered at a point on the ceiling, then disappeared. Opening my eyes, I looked at the spot but saw nothing. Amariaz, unaware of the vibrations, was busy stuffing the last of the documents into her magic bag.

“Amariaz, did you feel something?”

“Huh? No.”

So He didn’t notice. Should I ignore it? But it felt strange that only I could sense it.

While I pondered, Amariaz frowned, seeming to guess what I was thinking.

“What did you sense?”

“Some kind of vibration. A ripple that gathered at that point on the ceiling and vanished.”

“A ripple, vibration… Vibration… ‘Echo Detection’…?”

As Amariaz murmured, I suddenly sensed a strong killing intent. Immediately, I braced myself as a spear shot through the wall with a loud noise.

I deflected it with my arm, sparks flying as I redirected its path. The spear flew past us, piercing through the wall behind and vanishing outside.

“Amariaz!”

“On it!”

We quickly assumed a defensive stance and decided to break through the wall to get outside. I stepped forward and activated ‘Explosive Fist,’ shattering the wall, and we rolled out.

We were wary of angels, but it turned out… it wasn’t them.
