5-42. At All Costs

The ‘Compressed Air’ Amariaz had prepared earlier exploded right in front of the angel. The shockwave reached our position, causing the ‘Pneumatic Barrier’ to tremble.

“Whoaaaaaa! Isn’t that more powerful than before?!”

“Hyiiii! That kid is amazing! What’s his name?”

“Lize-san, you know… Maybe a bit more focus would be good.”

“I just woke up, so cut me some slack. By the way, you remind me of someone… Karna-san, any idea who?”

“Of course,” mom replied with a smile but didn’t elaborate. Seeing she wouldn’t get an answer, Lize crossed her arms and started pondering.

She seemed to be recalling something from the past, but having just woken up, she struggled to remember.

Oh, that makes sense. Since she met my father, she must have noticed a resemblance. Do we really look that much alike?

“Well, aside from Lize-san, we need to focus on the task at hand. The angel is still alive.”

“Seriously? After that explosion? Pretty tenacious. So, where’s the weak spot?”

Lize squinted, scrutinizing the angel as he emerged from the dust, regaining his footing. “It’s the wings!”

“The wings, huh? Got it.”

“Wait, how can you tell?”

“Well, you see…” Lize pointed to her eyes with a grin. “I have a special skill called ‘Hunting Instinct.’ It lets me detect enemy weaknesses. Cool, right?”

“Does it work on anyone?”

“Anyone.”

“That’s incredible!”

Being able to identify weaknesses is a huge advantage! Normally, you’d have to learn and counter an enemy’s skills through trial and error, but with that skill, you can skip all that. Man, I wish I had something like that.

Pleased with the praise, Lize shared more about her skills: lightning-based abilities, a skill that automatically counterattacks when she dodges, increased attack power in beast form, healing magic, and a skill that boosts mobility.

“And there’s also—”

“Wait, Lize-san, Yuuzen. Let’s save the chatter for later.”

“Ah, right.”

“…Yuuzen? …Wait, Yuuzen!? Are you Reizen’s son!? Oh, that explains why Karna-san’s here!!”

Wow, this guy is loud.

PA-A-A-NG!!

Another sharp sound echoed, gouging the ground. A second ‘Compressed Air’ attack was directed at the angel, who emerged from the dust cloud, again regaining his stance.

Meanwhile, the ‘Water Dragon’ and ‘Flame Dragon’ materialized, baring their fangs and attacking. However, they collided with an invisible barrier and self-destructed. The angel seemed to be counterattacking with something of his own.

“‘Earth Spirit.’”

“‘Air Bullet.’”

The ground rose, forming a wall behind the angel, blocking his retreat. As he quickly darted to the side, dozens, then hundreds, of air bullets rained down on him. Though he evaded them skillfully, the earthen wall crumbled under the barrage.

(What destructive power…) (tln : maybe this is the angel’s thought)

Normally, ‘Air Bullet’ has low lethality compared to other attacks, useful mainly for distraction or diversion. But Amariaz’s ‘Air Bullets’ had lethal force, capable of causing severe injuries with a single hit. The name implied “bullet,” but they were more like “balls” flying at high speeds. A fist-sized projectile hitting with sufficient force could shatter bones.

The angel was no exception.

(Unfortunately, I lack defensive skills…)

Five ‘Wind Blades’ flew towards him. His superior mobility allowed him to evade them with ease, but he lost several feathers in the process. More ‘Air Bullets’ followed, but their accuracy was off.

Amariaz and the angel, whose name was Fuuril, locked eyes. There was something familiar about Amariaz’s concentrated ‘Compressed Air’ and his white appearance that stirred a sense of nostalgia in Fuuril. He didn’t know what it was, but he sensed that Amariaz possessed something akin to what they had been searching for.

There was no time to investigate now. The priority was to neutralize the biggest threat, Ouren, and then capture Amariaz. Despite the daunting task, a glimmer of hope brought a faint smile to his lips.

“I’ll do whatever it takes to bring him back.”

He spun the scythe in his hand, resting it on his shoulder, then gripped it with both hands, preparing to face the incoming ‘Wind Blades’ head-on.

“‘Wind Sword.’”
