6-7. Side -Houen- Doubts

Houen hovered high in the sky, keeping track of everyone’s positions while watching the movements of the angels. With his keen eyesight, he could spot even a mouse from a great distance.

From what he could see, Ouren and Lize had already engaged in combat. Their flashy techniques had drawn the angels’ attention, and the angels had taken the bait. The ‘Flame Dragon,’ ‘Water Dragon,’ and ‘Thunder Dragon’ were placed on the ground, serving as distractions that were hard to miss. Despite facing four angels simultaneously, Ouren didn’t seem to be struggling, possibly even experimenting with his skills.

Lize, on the other hand, was fighting two angels. However, the angels couldn’t keep up with her speed. Among the four, Lize was actually the fastest, having trained to maintain her top speed over the six years Ouren had been in slumber. Both Houen and Uchikage had taught her, and now it was a fond memory.

There was no need to keep an eye on those two. Houen’s main concern was Uchikage and Karna. Although they were formidable, Uchikage’s age was a factor, and Houen didn’t know how he fought now. Karna, having distanced herself from combat for a while to raise Yuuzen, might not be at her peak.

“…Still, they’re surprisingly weak.”

The two angels that had been attacking Lize were defeated. Considering angels had existed for over four centuries, their current weakness raised doubts.

Houen had only seen angels for the first time recently, when he awoke. They hadn’t shown themselves until then. He recalled a distant appearance once, but it was too far away to witness.

However, could angels with skills be this weak? The two fighting Lize hadn’t even used her skills before being taken down. Similarly, Gyou and Kenra had defeated two angels without the angels using any apparent skills.

“Are they really angels…?”

Maybe these weren’t true angels but beings that had taken on their form. This hypothesis began to make sense. The angels might have pseudo-skills, inferior versions of real skills.

“Pseudo-skills granted to angels? That makes no sense… but still…”

Their weakness, reckless charges, and lack of combat experience were apparent. Angels, being nearly immortal, wouldn’t have the necessary biological organs for reproduction, unlike Lize and Yuuzen, who were mortal.

“Finally, here they come.”

Lost in thought, Houen heard the flapping of wings. Glancing sideways, he saw an angel approaching. There was no murderous intent, it seemed they didn’t intend to fight yet.

Houen decided to observe and turned his body towards the angel, who was now hovering in place, holding a spear on her shoulder.

“A rare sight, an angel not looking to fight.”

“…You’re troublesome.”

“Ah, I can’t deny being called sly.”

The angel, with her short hair swaying, glared at him. Though lightly armored, she exuded an aura different from other angels. Such discrepancies couldn’t be ignored. Houen conjured a spear of flames, remaining cautious.

“What’s your purpose?”

“Could you withdraw?”

“And if we do?”

“We’ll kill the spirit turtle and be done with it.”

“There’s no one here who’d agree to that. Try saying that to Ouren, he’ll genuinely try to kill you.”

“We have our reasons.”

What reasons could justify abandoning their comrades, Houen wondered. He felt talking was futile and prepared his flame spear.

“…Reasons?”

The angel’s words stuck with him. If they had reasons, perhaps there was internal strife among the angels. Cooperation wouldn’t be an issue if they were united.

Were all the angels not on the same side? Or was there another agenda at play? Despite sharing the same ultimate goal, were there problems along the way?

Thoughts raced through Houen’s mind. Without more information, he couldn’t be sure, but there was definitely an issue. He hoped he wasn’t overthinking it.

“…If you explain your reasons, I might reconsider.”

“You won’t back down, even if I do.”

“Well, that’s true.”

Further discussion seemed pointless. Houen gripped his spear tighter and raised it, ready for battle.
