1-2. Family
As soon as I woke up, I kicked the futon off that had been covering me and got out of bed.
I looked around to find my clothes and quickly changed, then dashed out of the bedroom.
Most children are not very good at walking quietly.
I….. Yuuzen, is the same way. Basically running most of the time.
I may not be able to move that fast, but my stamina seems almost limitless.
I tried to move as quietly as possible, but I guess I still got caught. Just as I was about to open the front door, someone grabbed me by the back of my neck.
It was a kind-looking woman with brown hair. She had a slim figure, but the grip of her hand around my neck was strong.
“Wh! Whaaa! I got caught again!”
“Have breakfast first, Yuuzen.”
“O~kay.”
My exasperated mother said with a troubled smile. Her name is Karna. I always try to sneak out like this, but I always end up getting caught. Even though I checked around carefully, she still managed to catch me.
I don’t know how she does it, but once she catches me, she doesn’t let go. So, I decided to eat breakfast quietly, even though I really wanted to go outside and play.
I entered the living room and sat on a chair to eat the prepared breakfast. I clasped my hands together and then picked up a spoon, slowly eating the soup and bread. Mmm, it’s delicious.
“Hey, Mom, what are we doing today?”
“Well, I’m thinking of helping out in the field at Uchikage’s place. Are you going, Yuuzen?”
“Uchikage-Ojichan?! I’m going!” (Ojichan, casual way to call your gramps)
Uchikage Grandpa is a person from the oni race who we’ve been friends with for a long time. He’s the oldest oni, and he knows a lot of things. He has a very gentle personality and is well-liked by many oni. I like him too, and we often play together.
Not that it’s been that long, but I always want to see him right away. I stuffed breakfast into my mouth, chewed and swallowed it. I drank the milk that was left and got up from the chair.
I want to go see him as soon as possible! To go to where Uchikage-Ojichan is, I already know what to prepare. My clothes are fine, but I need to bring a hat, a bag, and a basket. I have to take a container with me because I can get a lot of things over there.
“Mom, is this okay?”
“It’s fine. Can you carry the luggage?”
“I can!”
It’s easy enough!
I took a slightly larger basket and walked to the front door. I couldn’t see in front of me, so I tripped and hit my head hard, but I quickly got up and opened the door.
“Eh?! Hold on! Are you okay?”
“What are you talking about? Let’s go already!”
“As expected…”
After somehow convincing her, Mom grabbed the necessary items and left through the front door. She made sure to lock it before we walked away.
We’ll reach Uchikage-Ojichan’s place in just a few minutes. You can already see the castle, so it’s impossible to get lost.
The castle was apparently rebuilt only once, but it’s mostly the same as it used to be. In front of the large castle, there’s a huge castle town where many oni come and go. They work in the fields, transport goods with large hand carts, set up stalls to do business, and more. It’s quite diverse, but everyone here is an oni. That’s to be expected because this is the oni village.
Right now, I’m walking through the rice fields that extend beyond the castle town. On the way, I greeted some oni who had just finished working in the fields and were taking a break.
“Good morning!”
“Eyy boyya, good morning! Where are you going today, Yuuzen?”
“I’m going to Uchikage-Ojichan’s place!”
“From all of the people reside in this village. The only one who calls the lord as Ojichan is you, Yuuzen…”
“No, yeah. Seriously.”
The oni scratched their heads in a bemused or admiring manner and exchanged laughs.
Did I say something strange?
“Karna, if you need anything else, just let us know.”
“Thank you. It’s getting colder, so I came today to get some clothes and bedding.”
“Oh, in that case, stop by my family’s place. We run a kimono shop, so maybe it’s better to ask the lord about the bedding.”
“Understood. I’ll give it a try. Take care!”
They waved to us, and I turned and entered the castle town. All the oni here are nice.
Just a simple exchange of greetings makes me feel good.
In a good mood, I walked up to the gate of the castle town. There, two big oni were glaring at us with their club weapons.
They looked quite serious.
But I glared back, and the two oni burst into laughter.
“Hahaha! Sorry, sorry. I mean, you’re not scared at all!”
“I’m not scared!”
“Your glare isn’t intense enough yet.”
“Oh, come on!”
The big oni, scratching his head in a troubled manner, and the oni who was teasing me all looked like he was having fun. I know their personalities, so I’m not scared or anything.
They let us pass soon after. We entered the castle town and made our way to our destination.
Our destination is the Second Bailey Mansion of the oni castle.
