7-37. Side -Reizen- Investigation Begins

A hole opened in the ground, and from it, Reizen and Karna emerged.

Since the surroundings were being monitored by the “Earth’s Blessing” and the “Land God,” no one should have seen them.

It seemed they had successfully slipped past the barrier set by the angel, as there was no sign of anyone approaching.

This was the enemy’s base.

First, they needed to find the angel… but it didn’t seem to be in the area. Perhaps the angel didn’t appear often, but either way, nothing would happen if they didn’t start moving.

“Should we just go in through the roof?”

“That should be fine.”

Nodding to each other, they jumped, kicking off the wall to get back onto the roof. With Karna’s “Quickly” ability, they quickly approached the church, immediately hiding in the shadows to observe the surroundings.

There was one presence.

It seemed to be a human, carrying something as they approached the church.

Peeking out stealthily, they saw that the person was holding what appeared to be a gift. Was that fruit? Reizen wasn’t familiar with the fruits of this world, so all he could tell was that it was something edible. It reminded him of something Ouren had eaten.

The person placed the item by the church, offered a prayer, and then left. Their actions were indeed like those of a believer worshiping their deity.

“Hmm…”

“Just one person…? I feel like there should be more of them…”

“Maybe they’re limiting the number?”

“For what purpose?”

“To prevent anyone from seeing something they shouldn’t.”

It was just a quick guess, but it didn’t seem far off. There was definitely something in a place where even spirits couldn’t enter. Why they would prevent even spirits from entering remained a mystery.

In any case, it was clear that there was something in this church. The two of them jumped up from their spot, climbing the wall and facing one of the windows.

“Spirits, please.”

<<Got it~!>>

Spirits began to pour in through the stairs Reizen had opened with “Land God.” They boldly entered through the front, and the spirits unlocked the window where Reizen and Karna were waiting. This was something only spirits with some power could do, but luckily, some were nearby today.

Reizen and Karna easily infiltrated the church and listened carefully. They were trying to detect any nearby sounds, but it seemed there was no one around.

“…It’s completely empty…?”

“I can’t tell that much. Is it really?”

“Y-Yeah…”

Reizen’s “Earth’s Blessing” was adept at tracing presences, just like Yuuzen’s. But even using that, he couldn’t detect any presence of angels or other humans.

No one was there, yet someone had set up a barrier to monitor who came. And there was a reason why even spirits weren’t allowed in.

“No one’s here, but there’s definitely something in this church. Spirits, can you keep watch?”

<<Leave it to us!>>

Having invisible allies was reassuring. Judging by their enthusiasm, they would quickly inform them if someone came.

With the freedom to investigate, they relaxed their guard. They thought about where to start looking… but in situations like this, the place to search was usually decided.

“The basement.”

“Is there one?”

“Yeah, I’ve already checked with my ‘Land God.'”

“That’s convenient~”

Reizen’s “Land God” was a higher-level skill compared to the “Earth Spirit” that Ouren used. Simply put, it allowed him to move the earth freely and detect everything within its activation range. Unlike the “Earth Spirit,” it had no time limit, continuing to work until he chose to stop it, so Reizen typically left it active for a full day once he started using it.

He already had the church’s layout memorized in his head. Without hesitation, he headed for the room that led to the basement.

The inside of the church was dark, with no lights on the candelabras. A quick check revealed it hadn’t been used in a long time, as it was slightly covered in dust. The angels had taken over this place recently, so even when humans were managing it, it seemed they hadn’t used it much.

Dust could be seen on the clean hallways and decorations as well. If dust was present in the hallway, it suggested that no one had walked through here for some time.

“…? Doesn’t something feel off?”

“I thought so too.”

They quickly became alert. This was a church. The humans who had lived here before the angels took over had used it as their base of operations. Yet, there were no signs of cleaning, no footprints—something was definitely wrong.

Had the spirits left? But it had only been about a week. It was hard to believe the place could fall into such disrepair in such a short time.

The barrier surrounding the church, and the inside that seemed unnaturally close to a state of ruin…

“Doesn’t this seem bad?”

“We might not be able to reach the basement.”

It felt like the inside of the church shifted slightly.
