7-41.Side -Sreiz- The Returned Child

“What’s going on…!”

A loud bang echoed as the desk was struck. Fountain pens and ink jars toppled off the desk, clattering to the floor. But for him, too consumed by his frustration to notice, the noise didn’t register at all.

The sunlight streaming through the window felt oppressive. Reinforcements from the village of Oni, expected last night, hadn’t arrived, and by morning, the situation had taken a turn for the worse, leaving Sreiz in a foul mood. The delay in reinforcements wasn’t the real issue, though. The bigger problem was that the children entrusted to the angels had returned.

The citizens had been anxious about their children not coming back. Their concern for their missing children had led them to switch sides and cooperate, but now that the children had returned, those suspicions had been allayed.

Upon hearing this report, Sreiz found himself in turmoil once again. He had just managed to sway the hearts of the people to his side, but the angels had outmaneuvered him. With their skills, they continued to put him at a disadvantage.

“What should I do…”

He took a deep breath to calm himself. According to Uchikage, although the angels had never fought directly in the past, they had been declared enemies of humanity, assisting greater beings. If that was true, then the current situation in the Garott Kingdom, where the people had begun worshiping the angels, was dire. They had to escape this situation, but the circumstances had drastically changed.

However, the angels had not yet harmed the citizens. Combined with their divine presence, many were still fully devoted to them. If this continued, even those currently cooperating with Sreiz might defect to the other side.

“What should I do…!!”

He was faced with a difficult problem for the first time in a long while. He knew that thinking about it alone wouldn’t get him anywhere, but he was the only one acting in faith, trusting the village of Oni.

Uchikage, the oldest of the Oni, had lived for over four hundred years. He never lied. Being close friends, Sreiz held a deep trust in him. This made Sreiz even more determined to meet his expectations, but he finally realized that this was getting him nowhere, and he let out a sigh of exhaustion.

Clearly, he was getting nowhere. He slumped over his desk, scratching his head in frustration. Exposing the angels’ misdeeds was beyond his current capabilities, and he had too little information. He laughed bitterly at himself, thinking how easily everything had fallen apart.

He stood up abruptly, looking at the door he knew should be in front of him. He resolved to take a moment to calm down before considering his next move. But what he saw wasn’t the door across the room but the face of a young man with black hair.

“Hey there.”

“Whaaa!?”

With a loud crash, Sreiz tumbled over, completely taken by surprise. A person had appeared right in front of him without any sound or warning, and his reaction was only natural. But even so, he was the king. He had some training in self-defense and had even learned a few tricks from Uchikage.

He quickly stood up, leaping over the desk and grabbing a hidden dagger in the same motion. His sudden movement must have been unexpected for the other party. When he looked at their face, they seemed a bit surprised.

“Ha!”

“Nice!”

Sreiz swung his leg down, aiming to smash the intruder’s head, but they dodged by twisting their body. The intruder counterattacked, but Sreiz responded with his dagger. Using the momentum of his kick, Sreiz lifted his upper body, reversed his grip on the dagger, and thrust it toward the opponent’s throat. However, the intruder seemed to anticipate this and easily deflected it with one hand.

“Shock!”

“Huh!?”

A powerful shockwave surged through Sreiz’s abdomen. With his free hand, Sreiz had formed a pistol shape and aimed it at the intruder’s stomach. The spell had immense killing power at close to mid-range, but the fact that the intruder had only flinched slightly despite the close proximity made Sreiz’s eyes widen in disbelief.

“What…!?”

“Nice skill.”

“Stop it.”

“Ow!”

A sharp sound echoed as the intruder’s head was smacked. At the same time, the intruder’s movements seemed to slow.

“Sorry about that, Sreiz-san.”

“…!? A-Another one…!”

“I’m a helper sent by Uchikage. Is that explanation enough? Oh, and we’re Yuuzen’s parents.”

“Yuuzen’s parents!? Wait, hold on, this is all too sudden…!”

Sreiz’s mind was spinning. But hearing that these were the reinforcements Uchikage had sent, he felt a bit relieved. As he calmed down, he replayed the woman’s words in his mind.

“Yuuzen’s parents!!!?”

“Yup, I’m Reizen.”

“And I’m Karna.”

“That bastard Uchikage! What kind of reinforcements did he send me?!”
