8-15. Intervention
A thunderous boom echoed as an angel swiftly ascended, evading the attack from behind. It was clear that this had been their plan from the start, given the small number of angels in the frontlines.
The ground buckled and heaved, while the air trembled, making a terrible ringing sound that engulfed the surroundings.
The angel’s technique, Gou Houkou (Roar Cannon), used stored vocal power to unleash a devastating blast. While this skill had incredible offensive power, its one drawback was that the caster’s voice would temporarily be inaudible. By alternating between activation and deactivation, the angel could unleash this skill when the time was right. This attack, fueled by five centuries of concentrated voice, was powerful enough to bypass even the strongest defenses.
One angel used a skill to blow away the dust clouds. The terrain had been thoroughly devastated, and they momentarily thought it would take time to locate their targets—until, suddenly, an untouched portion of ground became visible.
“Ah, that was close!” yelled both Amariaz and Yuuzen in unison.
“What…?” an angel muttered in shock.
Amariaz and Yuuzen both had their hands on the ground.
“Whoa! Nice one, both of you!” exclaimed Reizen, raising his thumb in approval.
Having seen the Roar Cannon at close range, Reizen understood exactly what had happened. Amariaz had planted his hand on the ground and used a defensive skill called Shouheki (Shock Barrier), which emitted waves from the earth to neutralize incoming attacks. Despite its short activation time, he had repeatedly used it to block the incoming shockwaves.
Yuuzen, on the other hand, had erected a triple-layered Kuatsu Kekkai (Pneumatic Barrier). Judging by the slight fatigue on his face, he had invested considerable magic power into the barrier, but it had successfully deflected the attack. He would recover soon enough.
Karuna had also utilized her Slowly ability to delay the impact of the enemy’s skill. Although she couldn’t completely mitigate the damage, her interference had given Amariaz enough time for her Shock Barrier to absorb the brunt of the attack.
It was a well-coordinated defense, and Reizen refocused on the remaining angels with renewed confidence.
Then, from behind them, came a loud crack.
“Ugh!” Amariaz was sent tumbling across the ground.
“Amariaz!” Yuuzen shouted in concern.
Looking back, they saw Amariaz being thrown violently. Fortunately, thanks to the Substitution skill Yuuzen had cast earlier, he wasn’t hurt. But where had the attack come from?
As he skidded to a halt and planted his feet, Amariaz locked eyes with an angel. It wasn’t just any angel—it was Kyuuri, the one who had driven both Amariaz and Yuuzen from the Oni village.
“Kyuuri!” Amariaz growled.
Kyuuri hovered in the air, manipulating five large chunks of earth, one of which she had hurled at Amariaz.
Yuuzen instinctively moved to rush to his side, but Reizen stopped him.
“Yuuzen, wait!”
“Why!?”
“Don’t forget, we’ve got enemies here too! Amariaz, hold strong!”
“Ugh, fine!” Amariaz replied, his voice tinged with frustration as he braced himself. He readied his skills, preparing for a tough battle against Kyuuri. As one of the stronger angels, Kyuuri would not be an easy foe to handle alone.
Meanwhile, Yuuzen and Reizen were left to deal with the four remaining angels. The most troublesome one was the angel Reizen had encountered, who possessed a counter-type skill. Another angel was a threat because of the Roar Cannon, although it would take some time before they could use that ability again. The remaining two angels had yet to reveal their abilities, adding to the uncertainty.
“How’s your magic power?” Amariaz asked quickly.
“Still in the danger zone,” Reizen replied.
“Then let’s stick to what we did earlier.”
With the conversation finished, they kicked off the ground at the same time. However, the angels took to the skies, evading their charge.
The battle was growing more intense, and the group found themselves at a disadvantage with the angels controlling the skies. Reizen, knowing they needed to take more drastic measures, formulated a plan.
“Yuuzen!” he called.
“Huh? What is it?” Yuuzen responded, confused.
“I’m going airborne! You hit them from below with Explosion Fist!” Reizen shouted.
“Wait, what? Oh… I get it!” Yuuzen quickly caught on.
Reizen sprinted toward Yuuzen and, with all his strength, kicked off the ground, launching himself as high as he could. His physical abilities were enhanced thanks to his Earth’s Blessing, and with Karna’s speed-boosting skill, Quickly, he felt even more agile. Yuuzen immediately dove into position beneath him, channeling all his strength into a powerful skill.
“Explosion Fist!!”
BOOM!
The explosion’s force propelled Reizen even higher, shrouding him in smoke for a brief moment. By the time the dust cleared, Reizen had already reached one of the angels.
“What the—?” the angel exclaimed, caught off guard.
“Yo!” Reizen greeted with a grin as he grabbed the angel’s leg and swung himself upward, firmly grasping the angel’s wings.
Karna’s Slowly skill had slowed the angel’s movements, making it difficult for them to maintain flight. With Reizen now clinging to them, the angel’s balance faltered, and they began to plummet.
“Ugh…! Bouha!” the angel muttered, attempting a defensive skill.
“Whoa! Close one!” Reizen dodged the sudden swipe of claws and maneuvered behind the angel, seizing their arm and twisting it with a crack.
“Argh!” the angel groaned.
“Yeah, yeah, none of that defense-nullifying stuff,” Reizen teased. “Not while I’m around!”
Just then, the two crashed into the ground with a thud, Reizen’s knee driving into the angel’s back. The weight of the fall combined with Reizen’s calculated landing was enough to incapacitate the angel.
If this had been a human enemy, Reizen thought, they would’ve been finished. Brushing his hands off, he looked up at the remaining three angels hovering in the air.
“Damn it… how are they so strong?!” one of the angels muttered in frustration.
“I don’t know!” another angel replied. “We’ve been hiding all this time! This is… our first real fight…”
“We need to change tactics soon. I’ll leave the rest to you,” said the third angel, who seemed more composed than the others.
This angel conjured a spear from thin air, not bothering to face the others. Instead, their eyes were locked on the distant Garott Castle.
“!! Karna!” Reizen shouted.
“On it!” Karna responded, immediately dashing off.
The angel took off toward Garott Castle, their intentions clear.
“Damn it! They’re going after the people!” Reizen cursed, his heart sinking.
“B-but dad! What about here?” Yuuzen called out, concerned.
“We’ll have to manage these two ourselves. Think you can handle it?” Reizen asked, determination in his voice.
“Of course! But we’ve got to hurry!” Yuuzen replied urgently.
“I know,” Reizen said, glancing toward where Amariaz was still locked in battle with Kyuuri. The loud clashes echoed in the distance—Amariaz was holding his own, but it was clear he needed support soon.
As the tension grew, Reizen called out to the remaining angels with mock bravado, though he had no intention of them hearing his taunt.
“Come on, you lousy angels! Flying won’t get you anywhere!”
To his surprise, one of the angels folded their wings and dove straight down, preparing to engage.
The real fight was about to begin.
