9-5.Aftermath

“Hey! Houen, you bastard!”

“…”

“Hey, look at me! What the hell is this mess? If I hadn’t come, everything would have burned down! What, did your brain suddenly stop working? Look around! You know that if you use fire, the forest burns, right!? RIGHT!?”

“My bad.”

“Speak up!!”

The charred ground was soaked with water.

Ouren’s water skill was special. His water was the only thing that could extinguish Houen’s flames. Of course, even Ouren didn’t know why.

When he had arrived, the area had been engulfed in a sea of fire. He had managed to put it out in an instant, limiting the damage to what was within sight. But had he been even a little later, the outcome would have been disastrous.

“Sigh, at least it looks like you beat the enemy.”

“Yeah.”

“If you had to use this much fire, they must have been a real pain, huh?”

“…Mhm.”

“What was that pause?”

When Ouren glanced at Houen, the latter quickly averted his gaze. It was clear now that he had just wanted to test out his skill. This had been an obvious case of overkill.

Ouren sighed, scratching his head in frustration.

It was rare for something like this to happen, he thought, as he looked in the direction where Yuuzen and the others had gone.

He couldn’t see their target yet, but his Mist Manipulation skill conveyed the scene to him. It seemed they shouldn’t touch the barrier ahead.

Then Kenra swung his katana. At the same time, everyone gathered there entered the barrier.

“Oh-ho, I see now. That barrier is weak against vertical slashes.”

“What are you talking about?”

“The enemy’s headquarters. There’s a barrier around it. One of those ‘don’t touch it’ types.”

“Another troublesome one, huh?”

“Doesn’t seem so bad though. We figured out how to get inside.”

Ouren lightly kicked the scorched ground with his toes.

In an instant, the charred earth was restored to its original state.

Ouren, not one to enjoy staring at a wasteland, had used his Land Spirit skill to repair the area.

Satisfied with the pristine ground, Ouren nodded contentedly before turning around and heading toward the place where the barrier had been.

Houen followed after him.

“Hey, Ouren. Shouldn’t we hurry?”

“Rushing won’t make a difference.”

“And why’s that?”

“The enemy’s coming.”

Ouren pointed to a spot in the distance.

Houen immediately heightened his guard, but Ouren remained as calm as ever.

Even with the enemy closing in, Ouren’s composed demeanor was baffling.

“Where are they?”

“They’ll be here soon. They’re still a bit away.”

“…Seriously, how far can your mist see?”

“I think, probably the whole world. Haven’t tried it, though.”

“Your mana capacity is still ridiculous.”

“That’s about all I’ve got going for me.”

“That’s not true, is it?”

“Who knows.”

The two of them drew their weapons.

Houen brandished a spear, and Ouren wielded a black wakizashi (short sword).

Gripping the weapons forged for them in this world, they finally locked eyes on the approaching enemies.

“We meet again.”

“Hmph!”

Ouren swiftly brought down his wakizashi, Kage Orochi (Shadow Serpent), blocking Fuuril’s scythe attack with one hand. However, the force behind the blow was powerful, and Ouren slid back across the ground.

“Ouren seems to be handling himself well enough.”

“Yah!”

“As for me, I’ll take care of this one.”

Houen skillfully twirled his spear, deflecting all the incoming spears that were thrown his way. Though known for his mastery of flame-based abilities, Houen was also well-versed in spear combat. It had been a while since he had used it, and it would take a moment to regain his flow, but battle always had a way of waking up old instincts.

“Hmph, so you’re the spear-throwing angel that shot Amariaz in the shoulder.”

“Don’t give me weird nicknames!”

“But it’s not inaccurate, is it? Surprised you’re still alive!”

With a burst of flames, Houen forced the angel back. It was clear the enemy had already studied Houen’s abilities, which is why they had sent the spear-throwing angel to face him.

Despite being drawn into a one-on-one confrontation, Houen wasn’t particularly concerned. He stole a quick glance at Ouren.

“Hah!”

“Yo!”

Gya-zazazazaza!

Eight distinct slashing sounds rang out in quick succession. Fuuril’s skill, Eightfold Strike, was met with Ouren’s perfect defense, countered by the swift movements of Kage Orochi. This was their third battle, and Ouren had grown accustomed to Fuuril’s attacks by now.

“Honestly, you’re the only one who can put up a proper fight. It’s getting a little boring!”

“Silence, evil god! Always meddling… and now you show your face here too!”

“Yeah, yeah, I know most of what you’re up to, Angel boy. You’re using Tekil’s magical tools to craft new skills, right? What are you making? Come on, spill it.”

“When your back is on the ground, I’ll tell you, wretched god.”

“Oh, I like it! Simple and straightforward!”

Gya-CHING!

The high-pitched clash of metal reverberated through the air as another barrage of strikes began. Fuuril was now using his full abilities, causing the trees and the very ground around them to crumble under the pressure.

“Still as reckless as ever…”

“Are you sure you should be looking away?”

“Well, I can’t die, can I? Come on, spear-throwing angel. I’ll finish you off this time.”

“Try it if you can.”

With a vein pulsing on her forehead in irritation, the female angel, Enyy, slammed the butt of her spear into the ground. At the same time, Houen conjured fiery claws from his hands.

“‘Earth God Spear’!”

“‘Crimson Claws’!”
