9-10. Inside the Facility
Kshtak, kshtak—the sound of footsteps echoed across the floor.
The three of us had infiltrated the facility, advancing cautiously. According to Amariaz, the remaining Archangel was supposedly meditating in one of the rooms.
Why meditation?
Couldn’t they just sit normally?
Well, setting that aside…
The building was surprisingly clean. Its architecture was different from anything I’d seen even in the Garrot Kingdom. So, this was the angels’ headquarters? It didn’t match the image I’d had in mind.
“…Amariaz-kun, where are Uchikage-sama and Lize-sama?”
“…We’re on our way. But something feels off.”
“Yes, it does feel strange.”
“Huh? What do you mean?”
“There’s… nothing.”
Amariaz replied with a look of suspicion. Kenra seemed to agree, nodding cautiously and heightening his vigilance.
“Nothing,” as in…
They haven’t set any traps, or something like that, right? Nothing has happened since we got in here, and even when I try sensing, I don’t feel anything odd coming our way.
Yeah, there’s really nothing.
“Isn’t this weird?”
“Yeah, it is. We’re here for a rescue mission, yet there doesn’t seem to be any effort to stop us.”
“There’s only one Archangel in this facility, right?”
“Yes. And they shouldn’t have any remote-type abilities, nor are there any traps around…”
“…It sounds strange to put it this way, but…”
Kenra hesitated, covering his mouth with his hand as he spoke. He seemed reluctant to say the rest, but with a glance from Amariaz, he decided to be honest.
“It’s almost as if… the enemy doesn’t see any value in the two we’re trying to rescue…”
“…”
A bad feeling began to creep in.
An intense premonition swept through me.
“Amariaz!!”
“Let’s hurry!”
If the enemy had no intention of stopping us, we needed to check on them as soon as possible.
The three of us broke into a run, charging down the hallway toward our destination.
We passed through several doors and took three corners before finally arriving at our goal. Kenra burst through the door, and Amariaz and I followed him inside.
“Uchikage-sama! Lize-sama! Where are you?!”
“Over there!”
“Understood!”
Following Amariaz’s directions, Kenra led the way. The room was a disturbing place, with various exposed machines, some of which were releasing steam from pipes with a whoosh, and dials flickering violently. I couldn’t fathom why anyone would be here…
But more than that, my terrible premonition was proving true.
There was no presence here.
Amariaz said Uchikage-Ojiichan and the others were in here.
Yet, I couldn’t sense any sign of them.
Kenra broke down another tightly shut door. No door was strong enough to withstand the power of an oni, so it only slowed us for a brief moment.
“Uchikage-sama!!”
Kenra, the first to enter, immediately spotted Uchikage-Ojiichan and rushed to his side. Amariaz stopped in his tracks as well.
I couldn’t move through the doorway.
“Uchikage-sama! Uchikage-sama!! Can you hear me?!”
“… …”
“Lize-sama too…! Dacia-dono…?”
There on the floor lay Uchikage, Lize, and Dacia. All three were alive but unresponsive, seemingly drained of life, though Kenra confirmed they were not dead.
The odd part was Dacia’s presence. She was supposed to be recovering in the devil territory after bringing back information about the angels’ headquarters. So why was she here?
“Amariaz-kun…”
“Why is Dacia here…? Could it be that while the Garrot Kingdom and the Oni Village were attacked, the devil territory was also under assault…?”
“Amariaz-kun, is Uchikage-sama alright?! T-This is…!”
“As things stand, I can’t say he’s alright.”
Finally moving forward, Amariaz checked the conditions of each of the three. He felt for their warmth, confirming they were alive, but from their expressions, they appeared utterly empty.
“It’s like… something was extracted from them. Any idea what skill could do this?”
“…None.”
“Then this must be…”
“It’s not a skill. It’s a magical device.”
As he examined each one of them, he noticed a small puncture wound on each of their necks. It was clear that something had been done to them. But since they were alive, there might still be hope. Just as Amariaz stood up, leaving Kenra to guard the area, he dashed out.
“Caught you, Yuuzen-kun! Stop, you bastard!!”
He chased after me, who was heading in the direction of Archangel Ornic.
