Epilogue
A few days had passed since then.
We found ourselves in Hidden Oni Village.
Hidden Oni Village was undergoing reconstruction, with the oni diligently cutting wood and carving building materials. The carpenters, sleeves rolled up, were energetically engrossed in their work.
As for me, I wandered around the castle town, observing their efforts.
In the end, the connection between Amariaz and that god remained a mystery.
Amariaz stubbornly refused to talk about it.
He could have at least shared it with me, though.
But regardless, the battle had come to a complete end.
Though the conclusion was unexpected, I was deeply relieved that the god chose not to become an enemy.
I, Uchikage-Ojiichan and Kenra-san stayed in Hidden Oni Village.
Additionally, Ouren-san, Houen-san, Lize-san, and my father had returned here as well.
The devils, on the other hand, seemed to have returned to the Devil Territory.
Well, without a war, there wasn’t much reason to stick together.
Still, when Hidden Oni Village and the Kingdom of Garott were attacked, the Devil Territory was assaulted by angels at the same time.
Apparently, they had their own rebuilding to do.
Although we’re also in the middle of reconstruction, the oni are strong, so they should be able to rebuild quickly.
As for Amariaz, he headed to the Kingdom of Garott.
His parents are there, after all.
Since Uchikage-Ojiichan accompanied him, there shouldn’t be any major issues.
Tekeris-san disappeared with Abyss-san and Iubora-san, heading somewhere.
I don’t know where they went, but they mentioned they wouldn’t interact much with humans, so they probably moved to a place where they can live peacefully.
I’d like to talk to them again someday.
“Hey, Yuuzen-kun! Are you free right now?”
“I’m not free!”
“Oh, really? Got it!”
A carpenter oni called out to me, but I declined, claiming I was busy.
Though I was wandering aimlessly, I did have a destination in mind.
Leaving the castle town, I walked along the dirt path.
Quickly pacing through fields and paddies on either side, I made my way toward the forest visible ahead.
It had been a while since I last took this path.
I’d been moving around a lot recently and hadn’t had time to clean up.
Still, I couldn’t help but wonder why I built my house in such a place.
Yes, this path led to my home.
It felt like ages since I’d last been back.
The closer I got, the stronger the inviting smell became.
Breaking into a jog, I turned the doorknob and entered.
“I’m home!”
“Welcome back.”
A voice, once unfamiliar but now part of my life, greeted me warmly alongside another.
?
“What a troublesome fella.”
“Absolutely! Hahaha!”
“Let me gooo!”
“No way!”
Uchikage, along with Sreiz, had accompanied Amariaz to meet his parents once again.
With the angels exposed as the masterminds, doubts about their divine worship emerged, and angel reverence had completely disappeared.
Protests demanding Amariaz’s return had also quieted down, but his parents hadn’t given up.
In fact, they had shouted at the king, demanding why they weren’t informed earlier if Amariaz had been targeted by the angels.
What fearless parents.
Amariaz, however, resisted with all his might, even claiming he would return to Hidden Oni Village.
It seemed he was not fond of his parents.
That said, this was ultimately their issue to resolve.
Once they reached an understanding, they could come to Hidden Oni Village.
“So, Sreiz, is this country alright?”
“Of course. We repelled and even defeated the angels’ attack. While some were shaken by the revelation that the angels were enemies, having a common foe helped unify everyone.”
“Hmm, makes sense.”
“By the way, make me another kimono next time!”
“…Fine.”
“Yes! Awesome!”
Watching Sreiz strike a victory pose unbecoming of royalty, Uchikage chuckled and shifted his gaze to Amariaz.
He was still arguing with his parents.
It looked like it might take another two or three days to settle things.
As Sreiz murmured, “Ah,” as though he’d just remembered something, he turned to Uchikage and posed a question.
“Who’s going to be your successor, Uchikage?”
The question came out of nowhere.
It was true that Uchikage had no children, and there wasn’t anyone among his close aides who could be called a proper successor. However, there was a candidate.
“Kenra.”
“Oh? That young one? Are you sure about that?”
“He hasn’t realized his true nature yet, but he’s been by my side for a long time. I can already entrust him with most tasks.”
“Being able to handle work isn’t the only trait of a good leader, though.”
“Don’t worry. He’s skilled in martial arts as well.”
“That’s not what I meant, but… oh well. You could praise him more, you know.”
Sreiz muttered his last comment quietly, though it was loud enough for everyone to hear.
Even so, Uchikage recognized Kenra’s potential.
Though still young, he had proven to be capable and loyal. Once he realized his essence, he would undoubtedly rise to a level befitting a leader.
Until that day, Uchikage couldn’t afford to die, he thought, as he glanced back at Amariaz.
The situation hadn’t changed.
Didn’t he ever get bored?
“Well, in any case, I’ll be staying here for a while.”
“…What? You’re not going back?”
“Would you like me to leave?”
“Don’t be mean. I just thought you’d leave Amariaz here.”
“That’s up to him to decide.”
“Fair enough. Come on, let’s go.”
After calling out to Amariaz, the two headed back to the castle.
They ignored his cries for help—he’d have to figure that out on his own.
It seemed it would be a little while longer before Amariaz and Yuuzen reunited.
?
“It’s over, huh?”
“Seems like it. So, Houen, Lize, what will you two do now?”
While strolling through Hidden Oni Village, I asked them the question.
I figured both of them probably had things they wanted to do.
In truth, I had my own plans as well.
“What about you, Ouren? Planning to live in Hidden Oni Village?”
“That wouldn’t be bad. But I think I’ll travel instead.”
“Oh? Why’s that?”
“You know, I’ve actually seen so little of this world. There’s Hidden Oni Village, the Kingdom of Garott, Salettana Kingdom, the Bamil Domain, Vulpan Kingdom… I’ve been to places like Kosh Village and the Devil Territory, but I’ve never gone anywhere just to have fun.”
From a fish to a snake, and then a human, I had been caught up in one thing after another.
I’d never had the chance to enjoy a leisurely journey.
Now that everything was over, I wanted to explore and enjoy the world.
Besides, I felt like staying here in Hidden Oni Village as a figure of reverence would only make everyone uncomfortable.
As long as this place remained my home to return to, that was enough.
“I see.”
“What about you, Lize?”
“I’m free for now, so I think I’ll stay in Hidden Oni Village and figure out what I want to do.”
“That works. What about you, Houen?”
Turning to Houen, I waited for his response.
He seemed to have been expecting the question and had been pondering his answer.
“…I’ll go on a journey as well.”
“Oh? Want to come with me?”
“No. I’ll fly.”
“Ugh, fine. So why are you going?”
While I wanted to travel to see the world, Houen likely had a different reason.
He took a moment before pulling a book from his pocket—a grimoire.
“Ah, that takes me back.”
“I want to learn more about magic. While I am immortal, I now have a lifespan. Before that time runs out, I wish to master magic rather than just relying on my skills.”
“Diligent as ever. So, how will you study?”
“Who knows? I’ll figure it out as I go.”
“Hope you find some great encounters along the way.”
During a journey, you meet all kinds of people.
Just thinking about it was enough to excite me.
This was exactly what I’d been waiting for.
The two of them wouldn’t die so easily. On the contrary, they might end up making the world a better place.
Lize looked forward to hearing about their accomplishments while mapping their travels from Garott Kingdom.
“When are you leaving?”
“I’ll wait until Uchikage gets back. I’d like to report to him first.”
“I’m leaving right away. Ouren, let him know for me, will you?”
“Yeah, alright.”
With fiery wings spread wide, Houen took off, waving back at us one last time before soaring into the sky.
After seeing him off, Lize and I returned to the castle.
It would be another two weeks before Uchikage returned.
For the next century, rumors of various feats would spread: tales of a genius fire mage, a magician who restored a dried-up lake, or a spellcaster who revived desolate lands.
Each time such stories reached her ears, Lize would trace their travels on a world map in Garott Kingdom, imagining where they might be as she spent her rest of life like that.
