The following story takes place between “Fiancé (5)” and “Fiancé (6).”

Note: I have made a change to Hermes’ age.

Two years older ? Three years older

My name is Minerva Allreni Yu Kari Lorambel. I am the eldest daughter of the Lorambel Duke’s family, blessed with the talent of black magic.

As the daughter of my respected father and as someone gifted with black magic, I dedicate myself to the study of magic. While children of my age might have other interests besides magic, I have none. After all, magic is filled with endless possibilities, and every day brings new discoveries. There is no time for distractions.

However, I cannot devote myself solely to magic. As the daughter of a duke, I must also excel in academics and the arts. Fortunately, I am naturally talented, so it hasn’t been much of a struggle.

I am privileged with a favorable environment, social status, talent, and beauty. There is no cloud in my life. If I were to voice a complaint, it would be that those who flock to me because of my radiance are all insincere and tiresome. They only know how to flatter, which annoys me.

Well, such trivial complaints are insignificant in the path I walk. I will become a great mage whom my father can be proud of!

That’s what I used to think, but…

“Engagement, you say?”

One day, my father summoned me and immediately informed me that I was to be engaged. The topic was so unexpected that I let out a dumbfounded voice.

Without paying any mind to my reaction, my father continued.

“You will be wed to the eldest son of the Foranada family. Their family has produced light mages. I desire their bloodline desperately. If we establish a connection now, in the future, you may become the aunt of Caroline’s child, who is a light mage and a member of the Duke’s family. We have obtained their consent. The first meeting will be in early May. Prepare yourself by then.”

“W-Wait a moment, please!”

After listening to the rapid succession of information, I finally managed to regain my composure.

“Isn’t this a bit too sudden? Just the other day, Father, you said that you wouldn’t allow an engagement until the last moment,” I said.

My beauty and talent could become powerful assets in politics. It was crucial to carefully determine when and how to use them. I agreed with that opinion, which is why I had been diligently honing my skills.

Yet, this sudden change in direction left me bewildered. What on earth could it mean?

“I understand the desire for the bloodline of a light mage. However, wouldn’t it be too indirect to form a bond with a relative instead of the person themselves? Wouldn’t it be more suitable to engage one of the sons who are light mages?” I suggested.

The eldest son, Ares, already had a fiancée, so becoming his legal wife would be difficult. Considering the need to prioritize the other party, it would be challenging. However, my elder brother Hermes is only three years older than me and currently without a fiancée. He seemed like the perfect choice.

However, there was no way my father hadn’t considered the options I had in mind. He responded calmly.

“There are two reasons for not using Hermes. One is that the royal family is moving to incorporate Caroline. The other is that the probability of failure is high if we try to directly involve her,” my father explained.

“Failure?” I asked.

I understood the first reason. Even though the Lorambel family leans toward the nobles, they still have to show some loyalty to the Holy King’s family.

“Caroline has a deep affection for her brother. It’s hard to imagine that someone like her would open her heart to someone other than her brother. I confirmed it directly just to be sure, and it’s quite substantial,” my father elaborated.

“Is that so?” I responded.

“Ah,” my father nodded, appearing somewhat fatigued.

Unusually, he seemed tired as he nodded.

I also hold affection for my two brothers, but I can’t quite grasp the concept of a deep affection like my father described. Just how profound is this love?

As I tilted my head in confusion, my father continued, “Furthermore…”

“Your fiancé, the son of the Earl, Zex, has his merits. Although his magical aptitude is regrettable, his political acumen is outstanding,” my father concluded.

“…”

I couldn’t help but stare in astonishment at my father’s words. It was an unexpected statement coming from him.

My father, who valued magic above all else, praising someone he considered to have “regrettable” magical aptitude was something I couldn’t believe. Normally, he would dismiss such individuals without any consideration. There are no subordinates in this castle with less than three magical affinities.

It must be that my father acknowledges his exceptional skills… but I couldn’t shake off my sense of disbelief.

While I may face ridicule and mockery from outsiders, I don’t think my belief in prioritizing magic above all else is wrong. In this world, the power of magic is more important than anything. It permeates every aspect of life. In other words, those who excel in that power enrich the lives of society. It is only natural that they are rewarded in return.

However, that doesn’t mean that other abilities are unnecessary. The political acumen of the aforementioned fiancé is one such example.

Sighing internally at the collapse of my envisioned future, I nod my head.

“I understand. I will accept the proposal,” I respond.

“I’m counting on you. Here are the documents about Zex. Make sure to go through them,” my father says.

“…? Yes. Then, if you’ll excuse me,” I reply, slightly puzzled by the thin bundle of papers handed to me.

Returning to my chambers, I start going through the documents. With less than a month until the meeting, I’ll likely depart in a few days, considering travel time. I need to familiarize myself with the contents of the documents before then.

However, I soon freeze. Because…

“No attributes…?”

My fiancé, of all things, has no elemental affinity.
