Chapter 444: Summer Uniform: Queen Diwu

To be honest, I personally really like the Starlight Elementary school uniform.

Its design is quite simple: the top is a short-sleeved shirt with a tie, resembling a sailor suit, paired with a pleated skirt.

There’s a small pocket on the chest of the top with the star logo of Starlight Elementary School, along with the text “Shenzhen Starlight Elementary.” The skirt also features a similar logo slightly to the left.

The skirt’s overall design is straightforward and can be worn by any girl as casual attire. Last month, when I was resting at home or going for walks around the neighborhood during my holidays, I occasionally wore this outfit. The people in the Nanqi District are used to seeing this uniform.

In my memory, a long time ago, school uniforms in Shenzhen City were a big business.

Similar to the monopolized school canteens, school uniforms were also a formidable monopoly. While the canteen’s profit margin, no matter how high, only affected one school, the uniform business had the potential to influence the entire city and even the surrounding counties.

Back then, the Shenzhen school uniform incident led to a huge corruption case. The school uniforms in Shenzhen were standardized city-wide and could only be produced by a few designated factories. These uniforms were sold at specific sales points.

The factories had direct cooperation with Shenzhen City, and the fees collected were used to serve the public—like building greenbelts, repairing roads, and maintaining public facilities. It was considered a win-win situation.

However, within a few years, some people became envious of the profits from school uniforms, and the production and sales turned into a “business.”

The original two designs, for summer and winter, expanded to four designs for spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Each student had to buy at least two sets of each design from designated areas, and the quality deteriorated year by year.

Back when I was in high school, the school strictly enforced the uniform policy daily. If you didn’t have a uniform, you had to buy one and wear it to enter the school.

Otherwise, you’d lose points and have your parents called. The number of “uniform sales points,” which used to be only in the city center, tripled.

I remember most vividly that the “winter uniform” in Shenzhen City was just a thin layer, about the weight of an ordinary shirt, with no warmth at all. It felt like two layers of fiber, almost see-through, yet it cost over 300 yuan per set. Later, I learned that a city leader was arrested, having embezzled millions solely from the uniform business.

That was when I realized why so many teachers and security guards across the city were strictly enforcing the uniform policy and why the quality kept declining.

If I recall correctly, the current mayor, Ye Yuqing, was promoted during that time. She assisted in investigating and arresting many such “corrupt officials.” From what I observed on the island with Xiao Mo, Ye Yuqing seems to be old friends with Su Yunjin’s uncle, “Prosecutor Su,” who handles corruption cases at the provincial level.

At least, Shenzhen City has been slowly improving recently.

In the bathroom on the second floor, I took off my cafe uniform and changed into the Starlight Elementary school uniform and skirt.

The cafe uniform includes shoes with small chunky heels and a little bow, which aren’t very suitable for kids. My socks are also pantyhose matched with a Lolita dress, which is too mature for children, so I need to change those as well.

“Tap, tap, tap…”

Holding the changed clothes, I came out of the bathroom and walked into the staff lounge to find my bed.

Having spent a lot of time with Xiao Mo recently and shopping online more frequently, I’m no longer surprised by girls’ clothing, shoes, and socks.

In fact, I’ve gotten so used to these clothes that I feel like I should be wearing skirts or similar cute shoes, completely forgetting how I dressed as a boy.

I’ve stashed away my more gender-neutral clothes at home, preferring cute outfits.

“Let me see…”

I rummaged through the storage box at the foot of my bed in the lounge, took out two pairs of black knee-high socks, then grabbed a pair of uniform shoes from under the bed. I sat on the bed and took off my current shoes and socks.

Rolling up the socks, I slipped my foot in and pulled them up, then did the same for the other side…

Finally, I put on the shoes, and done!

The sailor suit with long socks and girls’ uniform shoes is a very traditional outfit.

Even though the Nanqi district is known as the “slum area” of Shenzhen City, for some reason, it feels the most affordable. The breakfast ingredients are ample, fast food is cheap with generous portions, and even the kids’ school uniforms are more comfortable than the cosplay uniforms sold online.

“All set?”

Seeing me dressed, Xiao Mo pointed outside the cafe.

“Li Chen and Ouyang Xue are already waiting for you.”

“Sister Ouyang is here too?”

I was a bit puzzled, “Isn’t she supposed to be at the internet cafe?”

“Didn’t Ouyang Xue hire a younger girl as a cashier before? There might be no one at the internet cafe at this time, so maybe she just wanted to come out and see.”

Xiao Mo shrugged, “Why not ask her?”

“Sister Ouyang!”

Leaving the cafe, I found Ouyang Xue examining the various fruits hanging in the small garden.

“Why are you here too?”

“Little one, your garden management is impressive, it’s almost turning into a fruit orchard.”

Ouyang Xue turned around, “I thought it would take at least another year for them to bear fruit.”

“Maybe it’s because the feng shui here is better.”

I gave an awkward smile, “Let’s not talk about that. Since you and Li Chen are out, isn’t the internet cafe okay?”

“That place is pretty relaxed. Unless it’s crowded here or during holidays, people mostly don’t go online at our place.”

Ouyang Xue yawned, “I feel like I’m almost becoming a useless person, so I wanted to go with you to the school to see the kids and regain some energy.”

“Kids aren’t always well behaved, you know.”

I recalled my previous experiences at Starlight Elementary School. “They can be quite lively.”

“That’s fine too.”

Ouyang Xue looked at me. “I’m really good at comforting children.”

“You… why are you looking at me?”

I felt a bit uneasy. “I’m not a child, you know.”

“You’re wearing a primary school uniform, and I heard something about a special school card from Starlight Elementary School?”

Ouyang Xue walked past me.

“Alright, I’m not teasing you anymore. Let’s get going. Don’t keep the teachers at the school waiting.”

“Okay…”

Xiao Mo and I opened the back door of the small truck and jumped in.

It was already filled with fruits: watermelons, grapes, mangoes, oranges, coconuts, and more, packed full with the scent of fruits.

“Oh, right, there’s one more thing.”

After we all got in, Ouyang Xue also took a seat. She pulled out two large red invitations from her small bag and handed them to me.

“My wedding with that person is on August 15th. You guys will come, right?”

“……”
