Chapter 449: If You Have Problems, Talk About Them
“Come on, kids carrying jackfruit and durian, gather over here.”
“Those with jackfruit and durian… hey, be careful! Look at you, all dirty. Go wash your hands quickly.”
“Jia Junpeng! Are you being naughty again? Look at the mess you’ve made, all sticky. You’re going to have a hard time washing your clothes later…”
As more kids carrying fruit arrived, the area around the boys’ dormitory at Starlight Elementary School became increasingly lively. Even though I was wearing a skirt and standing under the tree, I could feel the heat rising from the crowd.
?You really let the kids carry jackfruit and mangoes??
?I won’t even mention durians. Besides being spiky, they don’t have much juice. But jackfruit is really a hassle.?
?When I was a kid, I climbed a mango tree, got a lot of sap on my clothes, and couldn’t wash it off. My mom whipped me for it.?
?Same here. I got my clothes dirty from eating jackfruit without washing my hands. That outfit is still stained.?
Seeing the lively scene here, the viewers in the live stream naturally started discussing the troubles with jackfruit and mango sap. I knew what they were talking about, the sticky sap from these fruits is indeed a disaster for clumsy kids.
“It’s fine, this is also part of the educational experience for today.”
Hearing the live stream viewers’ comments through my earpiece, I explained to the camera, “Many of the kids here rarely come into contact with ripe mangoes and pineapples. Most of them wash their own clothes, so if they accidentally get juice on their clothes while eating, they’ll have to wash it themselves. After experiencing the inconvenience, they’ll remember which parts of the fruit they can touch and which parts they shouldn’t.”
Thinking about it, I also had similar experiences of getting my clothes dirty and being scolded for it. In fact, most of the kids at the orphanage had similar experiences. We had almost no recreational facilities back then, and not as much homework as kids have now.
After finishing our homework, we had nothing else to do but run around. It was common for someone to accidentally step into the riverbank and fall into the mud every month. The “Medicinal Plant Garden” was full of trees that secreted resin-like substances, sticky and hard to notice when it got on you.
The sap from broken branches of jackfruit and mango trees isn’t inherently dirty. You can clean it off with some “home remedies” like salt, a bit of vegetable oil, or soap. I can’t remember the exact methods, but these resins aren’t the problem.
The problem is the dust and dirt that kids pick up while running around at school. Especially jackfruit sap, which is extremely sticky. When kids wipe it on their clothes while eating, and then play in the fields, the dust sticks to the sap, making the clothes look dirty and impossible to clean.
The kids boarding at Starlight Elementary School aren’t that fragile. Though they are poor, they are quite capable. If they get sticky fruit juice on their clothes, they’ll wash it themselves and remember the pleasant memories of eating pineapples. In a way, it’s a form of education.
“Are you okay now?”
After briefly explaining to the viewers in the live stream, I walked over to Zhou Xiaofei.
“Be careful next time, infections can be a hassle.”
“It’s nothing, really. I was just worried the fruit would fall and get damaged,” Zhou Xiaofei said awkwardly. “And then I accidentally got my hand stuck.”
“Xiaofei is always cautious about food,” Li Denghua said with a sigh.
“Once, I brought some things to her house, and even though she really wanted to eat them, she insisted on waiting for her grandmother to come home.”
“If you’re ever craving something, you can come to the cafe,” I suggested with a smile. “There’s a lot of good food, sticky rice, drinks, and some fruits, all for free. Xiaofei, you can eat as much as you want.”
“No, I can’t,” Zhou Xiaofei shook her head. “Grandma says we shouldn’t eat other people’s food casually.”
“But aren’t we good friends? Friends don’t count?”
I continued to “persuade” her, “Just think of it as friends treating each other. Today you come to our place for a meal, and in the future, if you have something delicious at home, you can bring it to me, okay?”
Speaking of which, it seems I can call myself “big sister” in front of Zhou Xiaofei and Li Denghua? It feels really nice.
In the cafe, Xiao Mo, Fei Luo, and Gabriel are thousands of years old. When I’m with them, I always feel like a… little sister, with no sense of authority at all.
Most importantly, I see my past self in Zhou Xiaofei. We were both thin and… feeling inferior.
Previously, during the evening study session at Starlight Elementary School, the first time I met Zhou Xiaofei, she gave me the impression of being small and dark-skinned. She seemed like the kind of girl who often helped with farm work at home, spending a lot of time in the sun and not having good meals.
Now, Zhou Xiaofei looks much better than she did back then. Although her skin still isn’t as fair as the “young lady” Li Denghua, at least her face has some flesh, and her overall state of mind has improved a lot. It’s clear that during their time as friends, Li Denghua has given Zhou Xiaofei quite a few “gifts.”
“Is it… treating each other between good friends?”
After hearing my words, Zhou Xiaofei pondered, “Can I come to your cafe, Sister Nuo’er?”
“Zhou Xiaofei, Li Denghua! You’ve brought such a big watermelon over, aren’t you going to open it?”
At this moment, a teacher waved at them, “Do you know how to use a knife? Come over here, and I’ll teach you!”
“We’re coming!”
Answering in the affirmative, Li Denghua picked up the large watermelon at her feet.
“Xiaofei, you stay here… and rest well. I’ll go open this.”
“Ah… I want to go too!”
The two ran over to the teacher under my watch.
“Xiaofei and Nuo’er are a bit alike.”
Xiao Mo, holding the camera, said with a satisfied tone.
“It’s all about pride and other such nonsense, so silly.”
“When have I ever been silly?”
Feeling my long socks sliding down, I instinctively pulled them up a bit to make sure both socks were even.
“Let’s go and check over there.”
Aside from watermelon, durian, and pineapple, there were also quite a few “clever” kids at Starlight Elementary who brought back fruits that didn’t need processing, like grapes and strawberries. These children were now washing the fruits by the sink under the teacher’s guidance.
“Sister Nuo’er!”
After wandering around with Xiao Mo for a while, I saw Li Denghua running over with half of a pre-cut watermelon and handing it to me and Xiao Mo.
I was a bit puzzled, “For us?”
“Yes, you’re a benefactor to me and Xiaofei, so of course I have to give this to you. Xiaofei taught me this, and I’ve remembered it!”
Li Denghua, a bit embarrassed, handed the fruit to me and then ran off.
“I need to take care of Xiaofei. See you later!”
Holding several pieces of watermelon, I looked at Xiao Mo and then at the kids nearby.
“Shall we… find a place to rest for a bit?”
“……”
