I Will Never Submit to Miss Grim Reaper - Chapter 482
Chapter 482: So, You’re Also…
Ewen and I helped Luni onto the small bed I had made earlier, giving her a few fruits to fill her stomach. Seeing how weak Luni looked after the long journey and being poisoned, Ewen and I quietly moved to a nearby branch and each found a spot to sit.
One convenient thing about the giant trees in this other world is that their trunks are incredibly sturdy, especially in a primeval forest like this. Even if girls jump around on them, the branches won’t break—except that… climbing up is a bit of a challenge.
“Weiying! Can you make it up here?”
After checking the branches around the bed, Ewen called down to the girl below, who was busy gathering fruits and fetching water.
“Do you want the cat to come down and help you up?”
“I’ll go get her.”
Thinking it might be too difficult for a few ordinary girls to climb a fifty-meter-high tree, I summoned the Mobius Circle and jumped down. Together with Weiying, we brought up the edible fruits she had gathered from around the area.
It was then that I realized the things humans like to eat seem to be a bit different from what we elves prefer.
“Those yellow-fleshed watermelons by the river… Ah, you know, the ones that are yellow inside when you cut them open? I remember there were a lot of them, right?”
Seeing that Weiying brought up some large, delicate fruits, I was a little surprised and said, “I remember that one was quite delicious.”
The “yellow-fleshed watermelons” by the shore aren’t particularly sweet compared to regular watermelons. If I remember correctly, even the yellow-fleshed watermelons on Earth aren’t sweet. However, the ones here have a unique flavor, somewhat like a cantaloupe—not sweet, but distinct.
“That one isn’t very tasty.”
Weiying wiped the sweat off her forehead. “I only brought up a few kinds of delicious fruits… Does Lulu like them?”
“Ah… not really,”
I shook my head. “I mostly just eat whatever is available.”
One reason life in this other world moves at a slower pace is that resources are incredibly abundant here.
I first noticed this back on the lizardmen’s island, “Maha.” Because of the presence of “magic,” this world’s resources are truly plentiful.
Plants grow rapidly, small animals reproduce quickly, large animals have plenty of small animals to eat, trees thrive, and the planet’s sole energy source isn’t just the sun. This results in a lot of things here being vastly different from Earth.
For instance, on Earth, if farmers don’t use the right methods or have proper tools, they might face hunger or even famine the following year. To avoid this, people invented various tools to improve farming efficiency, such as hoes for digging and scythes for cutting grass—these tools were born out of the necessity to stave off hunger.
On Earth, when people can’t get enough to eat, and the dynasties are too chaotic, with a few tyrants in power, they are often forced to take up arms in rebellion. During these conflicts, many inventions for warfare emerge, like spears, armor, and chariots, gradually leading society into a technological age.
But what about Grandis?
In this world, many plants don’t even have the concept of a “bad harvest,” and there’s never been a time when people went hungry.
The plants grow especially delicious so that the Elves will eat them and spread their seeds elsewhere. After millions of years, the forests are full of edible fruits with incredibly high yields.
It’s said that this phenomenon occurs because the “magic” on the planet also follows the law of conservation, and it adheres to thermodynamic principles. If a large amount of magic is absorbed by plants and animals in one area, magic from other places will flow in to replenish it.
Compared to the vastness of the universe, the magic consumed by plants is negligible, which has led to the strange situation where the planet’s resources are so abundant that they’re almost overflowing.
Over tens of millions or even hundreds of millions of years, Grandis has hardly ever experienced famine.
The people here, even if they don’t farm or are too lazy to hunt, can still find plenty of fruits just by wandering through the forest each day. Starvation is nearly impossible.
With full bellies and plenty of free time, there are more people here who take life easy.
Take the three girls in front of me, for example. That “yellow-fleshed watermelon” is actually quite tasty, better than most fruits on Earth, but they’ve rejected it.
“Luni, do you want something to eat, or maybe some water?”
After helping me carry everything up, Ewen took a water flask over to Luni. “At least have some water.”
“Hmm…”
After feeding Luni some food and giving her a drink, Ewen returned to where I was.
“I’ll go rest for a bit too.”
Weiying stretched lazily. “It’s so high up here. I’m afraid if I look down, I’ll get dizzy and fall.”
Walking over to the branch next to Luni, Weiying said to us, “Wake me up when it’s morning.”
“Okay.”
I waved to the two of them, and noticing that Ewen wasn’t moving to rest, I asked curiously, “Aren’t you going to rest?”
“I’m not tired.”
Ewen seemed to have something on her mind. She adjusted her adventurer outfit, sat down on the branch, and gazed up at the moon above.
“Anyway… thanks a lot for everything today, Lulu.”
After a moment of silence, Ewen turned to me. “We all owe you one, really.”
“You don’t have to make it sound so serious, it was just a small favor.”
I looked up at the moon alongside Ewen. “You all seem really close.”
“Really close… I suppose… we are.”
For some reason, Ewen looked a bit embarrassed when I said that. “If I had been more careful back then, and hadn’t taken Luni to that swamp, she wouldn’t have been bitten…”
“My belief has always been… there’s no room for regrets on the road of a journey.”
I stretched my legs out, wrapped my tail around the branch to keep myself steady, and let my legs dangle and sway in the air.
“The meaning of travel is the unpredictability of it all. Sometimes, it rains and you get soaked, or you encounter lions or tigers and get bitten, or you eat an incredibly bitter fruit, or drink from a river until you’re full… All of that is what gives a journey its meaning.”
“Even though you say that…”
Ewen cautiously glanced at Luni, who had already closed her eyes to rest with Weiying nearby.
“Lulu, do you… have someone you like?”
“Eh?”
I was taken aback by the question. “Suddenly talking about feelings!”
“I… feel like my feelings for Luni aren’t quite right.”
Ewen lowered her head. “I mean, I always like being with her, eating together, picking fruits together, even sleeping together… You’re not human, so I wanted to ask your opinion. Do you think these feelings are strange?”
“Not at all.”
I blurted out, “Everyone has the right to like someone.”
“But… but…”
Ewen lowered her voice. “Luni and I are both girls.”
“Does that matter?”
“Doesn’t it?”
“No, it doesn’t.”
I gave a nod. “So, young lady, go ahead and confess your feelings bravely!”
“…..”
