I Woke Up Piloting the Strongest Starship, so I Became a Space Mercenary - Chapter 429.2
“Hiro here.” (Hiro)
[This is David from the Mercenary Guild, Reemay Star System Branch. You must be Captain Hiro, right?] (David)
“Yes, that’s correct.” (Hiro)
It was rare for a mercenary guild to voice call mercenaries directly. When they have something to inform mercenaries like us, they usually send us a message via a dedicated app.
“It is rare for the guild to contact us directly with a voice call. What do you want?” (Hiro)
[We have a request addressed to Captain Hiro for a top-priority appointment. I am contacting you directly to confirm if you are interested.] (David)
“High-priority request…? Is this client really trustworthy?” (Hiro)
I didn’t want to be a ‘sorry you got cheated’ kind of guy when trying to show up in a meeting with clients offering a high reward request for a nomination request. Since my main specialty was dealing with space pirates, it was unlikely that I would make someone hold a grudge against me, especially someone who can make a request with the mercenary guild – or someone important enough that they would even ask for a nominated request.
[That’s right… You could say that the client is as trustworthy as any client in the empire.] (David)
In order for a client to make a request for an appointment, there must be a certain level of trust. What would be that credibility? In other words, it would be the client’s track record with the mercenary guild… Like the client’s assurance of payment upon completion of the request, the appropriateness of the request as well as the client’s social recognition.
All in all, the Mercenaries Guild’s judgment was based on a wide range of factors.
“Is it from the Imperial Guards?” (Hiro)
When it comes to the clients that the Mercenaries Guild valued more than any other in the Empire, the first that come to mind would be the Imperial Space Forces. In the first place, it was the Imperial Space Force that paid the bounty for most of the requests dealing with space pirates, and it was the Imperial Space Force that gave us big orders when we were trying to take control of space pirates’ hideouts. It was almost as if we were in close contact with each other.
[You’re half right.] (David)
“Hey, I’m not trying to ask a riddle…” (Hiro)
[From the top… you see…] (David)
“Oh f?u?c?k?.” (Hiro)
I wanted to pretend I didn’t hear that.
From the top? The only one above the Imperial Space Force would be the F?r?eakin’ Emperor! What kind of crazy place was the guild trying to throw us into?
The rendezvous point was in the Creon system. The request was to meet up with the imperial space fleet arranged by the other side at the Imperial Space Force’s supply depot located there, and work together to eliminate the ‘space pirates’ who threaten the imperial logistics.
I let out a sigh inwardly as I ran my eyes over the hologram projected from the small information terminal. Just as I have predicted, the fleet that we would be joining was Colonel Serena’s independent fleet against the space pirates. I knew what was coming when we were supposed to be dealing with space pirates, but what a surprise. What kind of strange relationship this ended up being.
“I haven’t said I agree to accept it yet??”
[If you have special circumstances that prevent you from moving right now, we will consider it, but if not, you will have to accept it. It’s a high reward request with exceptional terms, and I don’t think it’s a bad deal for Captain Hiro, you know?]
“That’s true, but…”
My mind was shaken when I saw the conditions being offered. All ammunition costs and supplies would be paid for by the other side. Moreover, there would be a fixed reward of 10 million Enel along with an additional reward for destroying enemy vessels, and basically free capture of any survivor and salvaging of their ships. If the number of days of work exceeds 30 days, a reward of 300,000 Enel per day would be added.
The mission was basically to deal with ‘space pirates’ who were targeting logistics, so basically we would not be on the front lines. Depending on the situation, there may be a possibility of being caught in the crossfire of the front lines, but this would be a normal risk when operating in a disputed space.
“Huh…for now, let’s discuss the direction we’re going to take. Either way, I was planning to leave this place tomorrow. But remember. I love the free and easy life of a mercenary more than anything else. I’ll compromise this time, but if you force me too much, I might get tired of all this and run away.” (Hiro)
[Thank you. I will keep the other party informed as best I can.] (David)
With that, David, the guild official, disconnected the communication.
As long as we were operating within the empire, it would be risky to refuse a request from His Majesty the Emperor, who was literally the holder of supreme power in the empire. It was not as if the mercenary guild would turn against us, but we would end up paying a huge debt if we refused. It would also be too risky. In other words, we mostly had no other choice but to accept the request of the fr?eaking Emperor.
Well, it wasn’t that I didn’t have my doubts, but I was not an anti-authoritarian anarchist. Rather, I prefer to be involved when things go swimmingly. Even if I refuse this request and run away, I would surely be involved in other troublesome matters. In other words, I would find it better to accept something with some benefit and lower risks, than ending up in debt.
“The next stage will definitely be the hunt for the self-proclaimed space pirates on the front lines… It makes me want to cry.” (Hiro)
I looked up at the dome of the Reemay Prime Colony as I involuntarily lamented. I was sure that those space pirates were using battleships from the Belebelem Federation or one of its friendly countries, full of military equipment, and their skill level must be abnormally high. It would certainly be good money if we captured them. Hahaha… haha.
