I Woke Up Piloting the Strongest Starship, so I Became a Space Mercenary - Chapter 431.1
Status Report
Looking at the words Imperial Space Force Creon Star System Supply Depot, one might get the impression of a peaceful base with many supply containers piled up. In reality, however, it was a fortress, a space fortress.
This supply depot was the only station in the Creon system, and it was an important base that was responsible for supply missions to the Imperial Space Forces and the armies of the noble lords deployed in the surrounding star systems. Naturally, it was an important target for the Belebelem Federation to capture, and was therefore armed to the teeth.
Well, as for supply depots, they could be found not only in the Creon system but also in surrounding star systems, so it was not as if this place would be the first one to be targeted.
“It’s a stuffy place, isn’t it?”
Mimi, who looked out the window of the back seat of the vehicle we were riding in, gave her honest opinion.
We were greeted by Colonel Serena as soon as we arrived at the supply depot, and we were moving toward her ship, the battleship Lestarius, in the military vehicle she had prepared.
“That’s right. It’s a grueling military base. There’s hardly any civilians or anything here, is there?”
Elma, glancing out of the vehicle as well, responded to Mimi’s statement.
There seem to be very few stores that cater to military personnel who have come to the port to resupply or take a vacation. The last time I was on Edge World the Dauntless, a large supply carrier, it had many civilians on board, and there were a number of stores where they could unwind accordingly… but this supply depot didn’t seem to have anything like that.
“This is close to the front line. If we let civilians in, we’re going to have a reasonable number of rats around, as well.”
Colonel Serena, who was sitting across from us, shrugged her shoulders as she said this. It was true that spies of the Belebelem Federation could easily infiltrate in an environment where civilians could come and go. It would be a disaster if such spies were to enter a supply depot near the front line. It could turn into an even bigger problem if BC weapons or explosives were planted in the supplies.
“So, what’s the reason why you came all the way out here to escort us as quickly as you did?” (Hiro)
“Let’s talk about that when we get to the ship. So, did you get more crew members?” (Serena)
“Why did you think so? We didn’t add any new crew members. Did you think that we would just randomly add more crew members?” (Hiro)
“You do plan to add a new crew member in three years, right?” (Mimi)
“Three years from now? What do you mean?” (Serena)
“Didn’t you make that kind of promise to a 12-year-old girl?” (Mimi)
“Uwaaah…” (Serena)
Colonel Serena looked at me as if to say, “I’m so sorry. I can’t believe this.”
Even a mild-mannered person like me was about to lose my temper at this, you know?
“I mainly refused. After all, we couldn’t take in a child whose body wasn’t even mature enough to be a mercenary. I mean, she’s a girl at an impressionable age, and after three years, there’s a high chance that she’ll forget about such a promise and find something else she wants to do. That’s why I told her so at that time.”
“But you’re still going to check on her in three years, right?”
“I’m a man of my word, even if it’s a verbal promise. It’s only natural that I would go to see how things are going.”
The 12-year-old girl in question–Linda–had a strong resistance to the strains of fungus that were causing a pandemic in the Reemay Prime Colony, and she was asked to put her body on the line to make a special medicine. She was also associated with Tina, so it was only fair that she should be treated with some respect by visiting her three years later to see how she was doing.
“By the looks of it, I’m sure she’ll be waiting for Hiro-sama in the next three years.”
“I don’t think so. Linda and I didn’t have much of a connection, and in three years she’ll probably forget about me.”
When I said this, not only Mimi and Elma, but also Colonel Serena looked at me with disgust. Why?
“Okay, okay. I understand that this topic is not related to you. Anyway, Colonel Serena, Mimi has stocked the Black Lotus with liquor and other luxury items for this visit, and I need your help to process (paperwork etc) them.”
“Sure, our fleet will acquire all the alcohol that you have. Fortunately, we have the budget for it.”
“That’s great, but are you okay doing this?”
“On the front lines, even if we have a certain amount of money in our budget, we can’t really use it to buy many things that we want. Not to mention certain quotas when it came to purchasing supplies. However, those quotas don’t apply to the supplies that were personally sold to us like the ones you delivered.”
Colonel Serena smiled wickedly. What to say, as expected of an Imperial Soldier? Well, nothing wrong with using the allotted budget to get supplies from a different source as long as it was at a fair price, right? It would also be bad for me to forcefully try to take advantage of their position to make a profit. That would put me in a position of being exploited as well in return.
“Then can we talk to your supply manager about this later?”
“Yes, Mimi-sam… Mimi-san, I’ll arrange for you to be contacted at your terminal.”
“Yes, thank you, Colonel Serena, I will be waiting.”
Colonel Serena almost called Mimi “Mimi-sama” because she knew that Mimi was the Emperor’s niece… She called out unintentionally but then hurriedly rephrased her words.
