I woke up to find I have a child - Chapter 1
International Workers Day, otherwise known as Labor Day, was changed from the usual seven-day holiday to a three-day holiday for the first time in 2008. Gone were the days of a week long holiday, instead replaced with just three short days. The change was sudden and no one had quite adapted to it yet.
And Han Feixu was most unaccustomed to this inconvenient change. She had heard news earlier last month that the goddess was coming to participate in activities in the city center. She had been looking forward to this holiday for an entire month but now, she had learned that she was not going to have the day off on May 4th! (T/N: International Workers Day is on May 1st and used to be May 1-8 but changed in 2008 to May 1-3)
Why would she want to go to class on such an important Sunday?
This is her goddess, Ye Mingxin, we’re talking about! Her white moonlight, her vermillion birthmark! (T/N: white moonlight = Slang that means a perfect woman that one loves/cherishes for their entire life but often can’t attain them. Like the beautiful moonlight you can only look but not touch. Vermilion birthmark= *not too sure about this one* but apparently it’s slang that is also supposed to mean some unattainable thing or thing you long for.)
Of course, the terms such as ‘goddess’ were not used in 2008 nor were the words ‘white moonlight’ and ‘vermillion birthmark’ used to describe a woman, but that’s how Han Feixu felt.
At the time, the entire country was full of energy and enthusiasm for the 2008 Olympics. Therefore, on Youth day, which is May 4th, the celebrations were going to be bigger than ever before. As one of the current hottest and youngest stars, Ye Mingxin had been specially invited by the Beijing government to participate in a government-sponsored youth performance.
On the morning of May 4th, Han Feixu carried a school-bag that was half of her weight and arrived at school. The first thing she did when she arrived was to grab her deskmate’s homework and copy it down.
The same deskmate was not stingy with her mocking contempt: “Han Feixu, can’t you do your own homework?”
Han Feixu pressed the end of her pen to the shoulder, exposing the tip of the press-type fountain pen she used and replied while her head was still lowered and looking at the answers to the multiple-choice questions her deskmate had written down.
“BABCA…..I’m a performing arts student, why do I have to do homework?”
Every time her deskmate, Shen Sangluo, told her to do her own homework, she would refute with this exact argument. However, her reasoning was sound as she is a performing arts student and so as long as she could pass her cultural and standard courses, it didn’t matter what grade she gets or how much homework she does. After all, her future career and her performing arts classes were much more important. In fact, Han Feixu usually only comes to school for the last two months of the school year or so. So if she wants to copy someone’s homework, might as well just let her copy it.
After copying all the English multiple-choice questions, Han Feixu suddenly looked up, “You’ve haven’t forgotten about tonight’s plans, right?”
Shen Sangluo picked up the pen and was considering finishing today’s homework before she left today, when she heard her friend’s words and froze, “We have classes today. Are you seriously still planning on going?”
“Of course I’m going to go!” Han Feixu said loudly, “If I miss it this time, who knows when I’ll ever get another chance!”
“You’re not afraid of being discovered by your mother?” Shen Sangluo asked with a suspicious tone.
Han Feixu’s eyes flashed with hesitation at the mention of her mother, but she quickly grew determined once again, “I’m not afraid! We’ll just take a quick look and then hurry back. There are two and a half hours for self-study in the evening anyways, so if we take a taxi we’ll have plenty of time.”
Shen Sangluo still had her doubts, but Han Feixu had lowered her head again to continue copying the homework.
She had already thought about it. Skipping class once or twice should be fine. Coming to this conclusion, Shen Sangluo decided to just go with it.
Due to the implementation of the new rules, except for senior high school students, all other grades will get out of school at 5:30. Although the school said this was because they wanted to reduce the mental strain of school on students, the administration had secretly added another two and a half hours in the evening in the name of ‘self-study.’ Thus, school often didn’t end until nine in the evening.
This new regulation made the entire student population feel quite miserable. They barely had time to return home for dinner and then they would have to trudge back to school again around 6:30 in the evening. Shen Sangluo lived in the school’s dorms, so to her it was just time spent doing homework not at home and hence, she didn’t feel too bothered by this rule. As for Han Feixu, she thought this rule was cruel and mean.
As a performing arts student, she hardly ever came to school and when she did, she lived a very carefree student life.
Han Feixu’s home is directly across from the school. Every night she went home for dinner, and then watched some TV before coming back. When school finished, she would leave half of her things in the classroom and take the other half home.
“I’m going home first. See you at the back gate in half an hour!”
Shen Sangluo’s eyes were still stuck on the paper, and she merely waved a hand to indicate she heard Han Feixu.
When Han Feixu returned home, her mother was there. After eating dinner, Han Feixu poured out all the books in her school bag and started to stuff a bunch of her trinkets in there instead.
Ye Mingxin’s huge posters, Ye Mingxin’s CDs and VCDs, Ye Mingxin’s hardcover art photos, and the lightsticks she had made herself.
After everything was packed away, Han Feixu yawned sleepily. During the holidays, she would wake up whenever her body naturally woke her up. However, this morning she had to wake up at 6:30 and now she was feeling so tired.
There were still around ten minutes before six, before her meeting time with Shen Sangluo. Han Feixu fell onto her bed and thought silently inside her heart, I’ll just sleep for ten minutes. Just ten minutes.
Students seem to have a special ability, they always wake up exactly when they say they will wake up. Perhaps it’s because if they didn’t, they would experience the death glare of the principal and dean more often.
So just like she had said silently in her heart earlier, Han Feixu really did wake up exactly after nine minutes and fifty-nine seconds. She quickly got up to her feet and then reached for the schoolbag she had just packed. However, she grabbed nothing but air.
Her eyes were half open, and her body was still in a half-asleep state. But now, she had her eyes wide open as her mind became sober. And then….she was confused.
Looking around the strange and bright European-style room, Han Feixu didn’t dare to move at all, like a sculpture. She seemed to be afraid of disturbing someone in the room.
However, there was no one else in the room, save for herself and a pot of succulents.
Her first reaction was that she was dreaming, and so she slapped herself. Her forehead and palm both stung with pain and yet she still didn’t wake up from this dream.
About five seconds later, there was a sound of someone walking outside her door and Han Feixu quickly got out of bed. It was only then she realized that she was no longer in her ugly school uniform but a pair of cotton velvet pajamas. The sleeves of the pajamas were rather long as it covered up to about half of her hand.
And although it did cover the palm of her hand, it did not cover the fingers, let alone the shiny nails at the fingers’ tips.
With a white base, it seems like there were gold leaves of different shapes and sizes covering each of the ten nails. Countless fine diamonds dotted around each gold leaf design. Overall, these nails looked very beautiful, very feminine, and very not hers.
Han Feixu’s eyes widened. She is a student. Although she likes to dress like an adult during the holidays, she has never dressed like this before!
Also, which shop did her manicure? It looks so beautiful, is it a new style?
Fortunately, she remembered more important things shortly after this quick distraction. In 2008, the genre of transmigration, especially transmigration into the fictional world of a novel, had been a hot and upcoming thing. In order to read her transmigration novels, she had read them in the dark so much that her perfect 20/20 vision had become 20/150 instead.
So….did she transmigrate as well?!!!
Han Feixu jumped off the bed, put on a pair of slippers and then started frantically looking for a mirror in the room. However, although the room had what seemed like everything, it did not have a mirror. She glanced at a door to the side. There were actually two doors in this room. One was close to the bed and the other was close to the window. She thought the door close to the window must be the bathroom door, so she rushed over and opened it.
The person outside of the door, who had just raised their hand to knock, found that the door had opened from the inside. And that the occupant of the room was rushing out like a storm with a worried expression on her face.
The woman frowned, “What’s the matter?”
Han Feixu did not speak because she had lost the ability to form coherent words.
On the surface, Han Feixu remained calm, but her eyes had widened a little and inside her heart she was hugging a picture of the person in front of her and screaming with joy.
AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! ———It’s Ye Mingxin!!!!!!
Seeing that the other person didn’t answer, and instead was staring at her blankly, Ye Mingxin felt that it was strange. However she didn’t comment on it as she looked down at the watch on her wrist and saw that it was already past seven o’clock. She handed the things in her arms to Han Feixu, “I have something I need to do. You’ll need to pick up Yiyi today.”
She stretched out her hand, but Han Feixu did not accept the things in her hand. Ye Mingxin’s tone suddenly became cold, “What is it? Now not only me, but you don’t even care about Yiyi anymore either?”
…….It’s not that she didn’t care, but that the information from this one sentence was like a big bomb that was suddenly dropped onto her.
And thus, Han Feixu’s brain was like a frozen computer, it could no longer process anything.
Ye Mingxin saw that the other party was still ignoring her and simply laughed mirthlessly. Then she stuffed the car keys into Han Feixu’s hands. After doing so, she turned around and returned to her room. She needed to get onto set soon and haven’t even changed her clothes yet.
An actor naturally changes clothes much faster than ordinary people. Within five minutes, she walked back out of the room completely dressed in her costume and ready to go. She wore a casual long skirt, with polka dots covering it. The designer used white and black colors and the skirt draped down to Ye Mingxin’s calves. Her current clothing, if an ordinary person saw it they would be clutching their stinging eyes.
But in the eyes of Han Feixu who has over 800 filters for her goddess, the clothing was like a heavenly fairy’s costume and made the wearer look even more beautiful.
Han Feixu held the keys in her hand without moving for a long time. When Ye Mingxin walked out again, she didn’t even give Han Feixue a second glance before going straight downstairs.
Han Feixu heard the sounds of a car’s engine start outside and promptly swallowed her drool before returning to the room silently. She finally decided to go to the bathroom and see what she looked like.
If she really had transmigrated, but transmigrated into the body of Ye Mingxin’s girlfriend….
Then her ancestral graves must be burning TAT (T/N: A slang term that means originally something good turns out to be bad. In this instance, she gets to meet Ye Mingxin (good) but she thinks she has transmigrated into some novel and taken over someone else’s body(bad).)
She walked into the mirror, turned on the lights inside, and looked at the strange yet familiar face in the mirror. Han Feixu froze.
The person in the mirror is her….but also not her at the same time. The person in the mirror has lost that childhood youthfulness, her baby fat nowhere to be found. Instead, her features were mature and charming and even without makeup, she is a big beauty. Furthermore, a big beauty who is well on her way on the sexy older sister route.
However, looking more mature, also meant that she is older. From an objective point of view, this face looks to be about the same as a 25 or 26-year-old woman.
Han Feixu went back into her room and searched for a calendar, phone, etc, but didn’t find anything but a rectangular black box thing on the table. She looked at the thing. She could not for the life of her understand what this object is when it suddenly lit up.
A melodious music came out of the tiny box and the three words ‘Shen Sangluo’ were written on them. Han Feixu then realized this tiny box must be a mobile phone. She played with the buttons until she pressed something that apparently answered the phone for her.
Shen Sangluo’s voice hasn’t changed much and a quiet whisper came from the other side, “Sorry, I worked overtime yesterday until 1 am, and didn’t have time to look at the phone. I only saw your missed call when I woke up. I’m still at work right now, what do you need me for?”
Hearing Shen Sangluo’s voice, Han Feixu almost cried tears of joy. Ah, this is family, she is my real family!
“Shen Sangluo, I-I seem to have transmigrated….”
Shen Sangluo was silent for a few seconds.
“Beep—”
The other side had hung up.
Han Feixu: “….” To hell with family!
T/N:
In the past, kids in China went to school 7 days a week. Although on the weekends it is shorter and they do compensate it with longer holidays, it’s hell. Nowadays more schools are only 5-6 days, but it’s still really long from around 7-5. Oh and most schools act like boarding schools with dorms and stuff. So it’s not uncommon to live on campus for kids of all ages.
