May 4, 2008

Han Feixu blindly stretched out her arm, her eyes still closed as she fumbled around for her school bag. After grabbing onto something she hurriedly wore her bag over her shoulder and walked out the door.

Her wacky diamond bear keychain swung wildly on her keys as she took them out to lock the door. She quickly checked it was locked before rushing towards the back gate of the school.

Shen Sangluo was already waiting for her at the back entrance, looking up from time to time, searching for a certain someone. When she finally spotted a familiar figure, she stated with a deadpan expression: “You’re five minutes late.”

“It’s fine, it’s fine. We’ll make it in time. Let’s go, we can get a taxi at the intersection up front.”

As she spoke, she reached out and grabbed Shen Sangluo by the wrist. The latter was still a little hesitant as she spoke, “Are we really going? I haven’t finished my homework and they released the practice entrance exam today. I’ve finished the literature portion but haven’t started the math portion yet. And besides our school’s practice exams, there’s the No.4 High School’s practice exam as well. Although we don’t have to turn them in, the teacher will still go over them in class and…”

Han Feixu quickly stopped a taxi and then pushed Shen Sangluo in, stuffing her into the car. She’s known Shen Sangluo for so long that Han Feixu has developed an automatic tuning out instinct. As long as Shen Sangluo starts speaking about homework or studying, her ears will automatically stop working.

As the two of them sat in the back of the taxi, Han Feixu patted her chest and vowed, “When you see Ye Mingxin, you’ll finally understand why I like her so much. Tonight will definitely be the most unforgettable night of your life!”

She was correct, tonight really would be an unforgettable night.

The crowd was like sardines trapped in a fishing net, and although She Sangluo originally tried to stay near the edge, she was involuntarily squeezed back and forth. One moment she was pushed into the center by the fierce and violent fangirls and then the next, squeezed out to the edge again, only to be squeezed back into the center a moment later.

After this repeated several times, Shen Sangluo thought, as she was being slowly suffocated to death, is this how she will die? Her life ended at the ripe old age of 16?

Han Feixu, wearing her mighty school uniform as armor, fought side by side with the angry fans. A little bit later, she realized that these fangirls were a lot stronger than her and with the possibility of getting injured accidentally, she decided to make a retreat.

The noisy venue was full of the screeching voices of female fans who were yelling questions at the venue organizers. Suddenly, several unfamiliar men walked in with the man in the front introducing himself to the angry fans, “Hello everyone, I am Ye Mingxin’s agent, Qi Yu. I apologize that everyone won’t be able to see Miss Ye today. Miss Ye is currently filming right now and is very apologetic that she couldn’t make it. After hearing about what is happening here, she sent me here to give out a few gifts as an apology. I hope this can compensate everyone for their loss.”

As soon as he finished speaking, the noise in the venue rose ten times in an instant. Shen Sangluo trembled in fear. Covering her chest, she felt that she was about to have a heart attack any moment now.

She spotted Han Feixu move forward, clearly determined to charge forward with her fellow fangirls. Shen Sangluo immediately stopped her and turned them around firmly, “Go! We must go now, or else we will both die here!”

While Han Feixu was being pulled by her, her face was still stubbornly turned towards Qi Yu, “But they are giving out gifts! They’re gifts from Ye Mingxin, I want one too!”

Shen Sangluo roared next to her, “What gifts do you want?! I’ll buy some for you if you want them so badly! Hurry up and let’s go!”

Frightened by the sudden outburst from her usually calm deskmate, Han Feixu quickly followed Shen Sangluo.

As they walked through the crowd and into an empty hallway, Shen Sangluo looked around with a frown. She didn’t recognize any of the decorations around them and finally, after some turning, realized they were lost. She wondered what she should do, but there was no one around in this empty hallway to ask for help. She looked around and spotted a member of the cleaning staff carrying out a trash bag. Shen Sangluo quickly followed after the staff member, dragging Han Feixu with her.

While the front entrance of the Taiyangyu hotel is magnificent and brilliant, the back entrance was in a dilapidated alley where the staff threw the garbage away and received deliveries. Shen Sangluo stepped out first and stood near the door, looking around before turning towards Han Feixu, “Do you know where we are?”

Han Feixu stepped out from behind her and replied with a bored face, “I don’t know. Who cares where we are, as long as we continue going forward we will eventually find the main street. Then we can make our way back from there.”

With no other option, Shen Sangluo nodded and lifted her foot to leave. Suddenly, her arm was pulled by Han Feixu. She used a lot of strength and pinched the most tender part of Shen Sangluo’s arm. Shen Sangluo sucked in a pained breath and turned her head in a panic, “What are you doing? What’s going on?!”

She tried to shrug off Han Feixu’s hands but the other party didn’t seem to pay attention to her words at all as she shook her seven ways until she was dizzy,

“Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god! It’s her! It’s Ye Mingxin!”

Being shaken up like this, she couldn’t even see Han Feixu, let alone Ye Mingxin. When she was finally able to break her arms out of that death grip, she followed Han Feixu’s gaze and found a van idling in the distance. After staring at it for a long time, she was finally able to make out a figure with their head bowed, hiding in the shadows of the van.

Shen Sangluo: “….”

Even if that isn’t Ye Mingxin, she must sincerely acknowledge and praise Han Feixu’s eyesight. Finding that hidden figure is even harder than playing a game of hide and seek!

Shen Sangluo’s voice was full of uncertainty, “That doesn’t seem right. Did you recognize the wrong person? Didn’t the agent just say that Ye Mingxin is filming right now? Ah, let’s go home already, it’s….”

As she spoke, she turned her head, and before she completely turned her head, a black shadow rushed in front of her.

By the time her head turned forward again, Han Feixu had already run up to the stranger.

Shen Sangluo: =?= ???

Ye Mingxin was exhausted today. She had gotten up at 4 in the morning, and was busy all day following her schedule that was packed full of events. She was about halfway to another scheduled work event when she got the news that her fans had made a big ruckus at an Olympic games event venue. Qi Yu had to go in with a few assistants to settle the crowd while she waited. She was also supposed to eat dinner with a few investors later and so this half an hour right now is her only break for today, but now she can’t even rest as she waits for her agent to placate the crowd.

She felt stuffy sitting in the van and so with a tired spirit she had stepped out to get a breath of fresh air.

The temperature in early May is only a dozen degrees in the evening, neither too hot nor too cold, and just perfect enough to refresh her muddy brain. (T/N: 12 celcius = about 54 Fahrenheit)

She heard someone running towards her from a distance and cursed with her head still lowered. She turned around and was about to open the door and escape back into her van. However, the person running towards her was much faster than her. She had barely turned her body when the other party made it to her side.

….Is this fan of hers Asafa Powell*? How can they run so fast? (*T/N: Asafa Powell is an athlete who set the world record for running twice before Usain Bolt beat him.)

Knowing that she could no longer escape or hide, she stood her ground. However, the other party simply panted for breath but didn’t speak. Hmm, it seems they are not too sure that it’s actually her.

Ye Mingxin raised her head. Even wearing a pair of large sunglasses, her exquisite face that could only belong to an actress couldn’t be hidden. She watched as Han Feixu showed an excited “I knew it!” expression and found herself a little stunned by her fan’s enthusiasm.

After a short pause, Ye Mingxin took off her sunglasses. With her face finally revealed, the little girl in front of her became even more excited, her face full of shock and joy. However, a second later, the little fan seemed to have finally accepted reality and started laughing happily.

Her laugh was soft and gentle, as if she was revealing the softest part of her heart. Meanwhile, Shen Sangluo, who had wanted to walk over and stop Han Feixu, covered her mouth in shock as she watched Ye Mingxin take off her sunglasses.

Damn, it really is Ye Mingxin!

After the wave of surprise passed through her heart, her impression of Ye Mingxin rose a few points. Although for no other reason than her smile being too damn beautiful and intoxicating.

Ye Mingxin opened her mouth and let out a single word in a delicate voice “This-”

“This, I, I’m your fan! Ye Mingxin, I like you very, very much, can you give me your autograph?” Han Feixu was still reeling from shock at meeting her idol in person, but finally her brain had recovered and she quickly remembered what she originally wanted to say.

Ye Mingxin stared at her dumbfoundedly, “Autograph?”

“Mmhmm!” Han Feixu’s eyes were super bright, like a little milk dog who had finally spotted their owner after not seeing them for ten days. If she had a tail, it would be waving crazily like a super-powered electric fan right now.”

Ye Mingxin lowered her eyes, silent for two seconds, before she looked at Han Feixu again, still smiling gently, “I don’t have a pen on me, do you have one?”

Han Feixu nodded, “Yes, yes, just you wait, my idol.”

She grabbed her backpack and opened the zipper, searching around frantically inside. As she searched, Ye Mingxin glanced inside and found that everything in the bag was something related to her.

It seems what her fan said wasn’t a lie. She really does like her.

Ye Mingxin watched as she dug back and forth before finally looking up in frustration, “It seems I forgot to bring it.”

Less than a second of frustration later, Han Feixu seemed to regain her vitality as she said, “It doesn’t matter, my classmate is with me. I’ll borrow a pen from her, please wait here!”

Seeing that she was about to run off again, Ye Mingxin called out to her, “No, there’s no need.”

Han Feixu turned back around and watched as Ye Mingxin rummaged through her pockets before finally taking out two pieces of chocolate. She grabbed Han Feixu hand, her warm body temperature piercing through Han Feixu’s cold hand. She placed the two pieces of chocolate in Han Feixu’s palm before closing her fingers over her first.

“Although this is nothing amazing, I’ll give you some chocolates instead. It is Youth Day after all, so consider this my Youth Day present to you.” (T/N: Youth Day (May 4th) in China celebrates people age 14-28 and is similar to Golden Week in Japan)

Han Feixu’s eyes widened and she stared at Ye Mingxin with a dazed look. Ye Mingxin raised her arm and patted Han Feixu’s hair, her movements light and cautious, as if she was handling a rare treasure.

Her eyes studied Han Feixu’s features, as if she was trying to memorize her current appearance. After she looked her up and down, Ye Mingxin smiled and said, “Happy Youth Day, my little fan.”

Han Feixu then drifted away with an intoxicated expression on her face.

As the two sat in the back of the taxi, neither of them spoke. The night scene outside was beautiful, with a refreshing cool breeze blowing by. Shen Sangluo stared out the window. The crazy fangirls had exhausted all of her strength and now she just wishes to go back to the quiet embrace of her math homework.

The car drove out another two kilometers when it stopped at a red light. Then Han Feixu suddenly spoke,

“I think I want to enroll into the Beijing Film Academy.”

Shen Sangluo turned towards her, thinking she must’ve heard wrong, “What did you say just now? Where do you want to enroll?”

Han Feixu spoke again with her eyes looking straight forward, “I think, no I want to enroll into the Beijing Film Academy.”

She clenched her fists, her voice full of regret, “I’ve only discovered today that the way I’ve treated idols till now was just too stupid. In the future, I want to go to the Film Academy and fight with my idols side by side!”

Shen Sangluo stayed silent for a long time before finally turning her head back towards the window. Han Feixu was very dissatisfied by her reaction, “Hey, I said I want to enroll into the Beijing Film Academy. Why are you ignoring me?”

Shen Sangluo glanced at her, “You’re way in over your head, go home, wash up, and go to sleep. You still have to go to school and copy my homework tomorrow.”

Han Feixu: “….”

With a heart full of ambition, Han Feixu returned to her school. Han Feixu had found not only a dream, but also found out that the dean had called her mother after she skipped the evening classes.

While Han Feixu was bowed her head as her mother scolded her, Ye Mingxin was on her way to dinner.

Ye Mingxin leaned back in her seat, her head towards the scenery outside. Qi Yu glanced over at her although she wore the same expressionless face as usual, he felt that there was something different about her today.

Qi Yu was curious, “You seem like you’re in a good mood, what’s the cause?”

Ye Mingxin shifted her body, and just when Qi Yu thought she wouldn’t say anything, she suddenly said in a quiet whisper, “I saw a little friend of mine who I haven’t seen in a while. She has grown up well.”

Qi Yu blinked. This indeed sounds like a happy thing. He smiled and was about to congratulate her when Ye Mingxin twisted her head towards him, “No.86 High, do you know where that is?”

T/N: Friendly reminder that the age gap between our two characters is only 4 years! Also, we have reached the halfway point of our novel! Although technically the novel has more than 100 chapters, the “main story” stops at Ch.99/100 soooo technically this is the halfway point! Hope you don’t mind the slow burn~
