- Chapter 6.2 Bonus - Theodore POV
The gentle sunlight illuminated the petals and leaves of the plants, still wet from the previous day’s rain, making them sparkle. As I walked through the garden, I picked the herbs I needed for today’s concoction.
“Theodore.”
I turned at the sound of my name to see the apothecary who was both my supervisor and guardian standing there.
“Count Bertini is here to see you.”
“…Understood. I’ll be there as soon as I finish gathering these.”
“Hurry up, then,” he said before walking away.
Though he was supposed to be my guardian, he never really watched over me. I suppose they believed I wouldn’t attempt to escape or engage in any suspicious behavior. And, for the time being, they were right—I had no such intentions.
I liked life at this sanatorium. I could study medicinal herbs to my heart’s content, and I didn’t have to deal with any girls chasing after me. The only dissatisfaction I had was not being able to see Alexia.
“Theodore.”
My adoptive father greeted me with a smile as I entered the visitors’ room.
“You look as healthy as ever.”
“You look well too, Father.”
My adoptive father regularly came to visit me. Despite being the adoptive son who poisoned his biological daughter, he had no intention of dissolving the adoption. He was truly kind, almost to the point of being foolish.
“They say you have a knack for apothecary work. I hear you’re even creating new medicines now?”
It had been nearly a year since I arrived here. With my prior knowledge and what I’d learned here, I was able to create various medicines. Having previously studied independently, my unconventional ideas intrigued the sanatorium’s apothecaries.
“A royal physician heard about it. He suggested you might work as an apothecary in the royal palace once you leave here.”
“Me, at the palace?”
What an absurd idea. Both the physician and my foster father must be fools.
I was a criminal who poisoned my sister. Just because it wasn’t publicized didn’t mean the fact was erased. Besides, the prince would never allow someone like me to work at the palace.
“Your actions were indeed a grave crime, but I believe that if you repent and atone for your sins, you should be forgiven. After all, you’re still young. You can start anew.”
“Father…”
I see. He still saw me as a child. Even though I was of age, to him, I was still a boy. He thought my mistakes were childish and that time would heal them.
Repent? Atone for my sins? I had no intention of doing such things. What I did was necessary to obtain Alexia. Though I failed, I admit that was due to my immaturity.
But still… I haven’t given up on her.
From the first time I met the angelic Alexia, her beauty both inside and out captivated me. As she grew more beautiful, I wanted to keep her away from other eyes, to make her my treasure.
Even if she now belongs to another man, I can’t forget her.
“Thank you,” I said, bowing my head to my foster father.
“I’m looking forward to the day you return home.”
“…Yes.”
I had no desire to return to a home without Alexia. She was already living with that man, and they were to be married in six months. I wouldn’t be leaving here until then, at the earliest.
For now, I’ll stay quiet. I’ll make them think I’ve given up on Alexia. Next time, I won’t fail. I’ll plan carefully and meticulously.
Yes, I’m still young. I have time. Even if it takes years, as long as I end up with her, it’s all that matters.
I love only you, Alexia.
