145. Mari-nee and the Advice

“Fuu…”

Feeling exhausted from the unfamiliar socializing, I headed towards the beach directly accessible from the palace, accompanied by Gils and Vel.

I took off my shoes and walked slowly along the water’s edge.

The soothing sound of the waves echoed in my ears.

The waves washed over my feet, coming and going.

The tickling sensation cleared my mind of unnecessary thoughts.

“…”

After walking in silence for a while, I found the moonlight brighter than the light from the palace. Suddenly, Gils stepped in front of me.

His eyes were vigilant, fixed on the darkness ahead.

Then, as if appearing out of nowhere, the figure of an unfamiliar man emerged like a ghost.

He was as tall as Gils and wore a glossy black fur coat.

But what caught my eye the most was the massive weapon he carried in his right hand.

It was also black, but the blade had a menacing dark brown hue.

At first, I thought it was a scythe, but the blade and the base were too thick for that.

Not a scythe… an axe?

Despite the weapon’s likely weight of several kilos, the man stood unwaveringly.

This man, who seemed fundamentally different in his strength, directed an ominous gaze at me, matching the weapon’s sinister aura.

“To think that bastard would lose to such a little girl… He’s really lost his touch.”

His rude tone was filled with unmistakable malice.

“But, you seem to have some power. In that case, it might be best to nip this potential threat in the bud before it becomes a problem.”

As he took a step forward, a chilling killing intent was released.

Gils and Vel immediately prepared to counter, but someone stepped in even faster.

“…Jade-san?”

“Yeah, it’s the old man you beat to a pulp, jou-chan.”

“No, I don’t think I beat you to a pulp…”

Despite evading all of Gils’ attacks, he still had the nerve to say that.

Although we won in the end, I still felt like we lost.

“You… Jade,” the man said, his voice much lower and darker than when he spoke to me.

“Don’t be so hostile. You’re here secretly from Zenoa, aren’t you, Judas?”

“Don’t say my name! You traitor.”

“I never intended to betray anyone, but it’s sad when we can’t understand each other. Right, jou-chan?”

“Please don’t involve me in this…”

I didn’t know this Judas person at all.

But what bothered me was that everyone from Zenoa seemed to call Jade a traitor.

He laughed it off, but the feelings behind it were certainly not light.

Regardless of the truth, it seemed that the people from Zenoa felt he had done something unforgivable.

“I don’t mind fighting you, but shouldn’t you be focusing on something else right now? Preparing for that big event, or whatever it is.”

“Tch, I’ll cut you down with this axe one day. You and those little girls too.”

“What, collateral damage?!”

I widened my eyes in shock, and Gils looked ready to attack.

However, everything froze when Jade-san’s voice echoed through the air.

“I won’t allow that.”

His tone was uncharacteristically stern, with no room for argument.

His eyes were serious, more intense than I had ever seen, even in battle.

As I was bewildered by his drastic change, Judas-san’s expression softened just a bit.

“I thought you’d gone soft, but you can still make that face. Prove it with your skills. Otherwise, my words will become reality.”

With that, Judas-san disappeared into the darkness as suddenly as he had appeared.

We stayed still until his presence completely vanished, and then Jade-san spoke again.

I expected him to return to his usual tone, but he didn’t.

“Jou-chan, you should stay out of this country’s affairs. If you get involved, you’ll be forced to make some tough decisions in the future.”

He gently patted my head and started walking back to the palace.

The chains around his ankles clinked as he moved.

Being treated like a child should have irritated me, but for some reason, I didn’t feel any dark or murky emotions this time…
