A Reform for Food Preservation! (3)

10 days later…

“Diku? You’re here again?”

Ever since that day, Diku has been visiting the pantry every day so I’ve become quite close to him.

“Well, I was curious about the result. Today is the 10th day, so you’re going to open them, right?”

“Yup. I’m thinking about cooking them first rather than eating them raw. Rufa, can you go ask the chef if we can borrow the kitchen?”

“Ok.” Rufa said that and left. I’ve gotten quite close with Rufa too.

“Diku, can you help me carry them?”

“Sure. But in exchange, you tell the captains I wasn’t skipping the training but was helping you, alright?”

I knew he came here to slack off! Well, whatever.

With that, we carried the canned food to the dining hall while exchanging small talks. When we finally arrived at the dining hall, everyone seemed to be tense.

I wonder what has happened. When I scoured the dining hall with my eyes, I saw him and immediately understood. Well, the Lieutenant General himself came to the dining hall along with Lapilia-sama and Grantz-sama, so no wonder everyone seemed tense.

“You’re here, Roa. You sure did quite an interesting thing behind my back.”

“Huh?”

Behind his back? But Grantz-sama told me I only needed to report to Rays-sama when I wanted to restock the food, so why did it seem like I was hiding some- Ah! Grantz-sama averted my eyes! He sold me!?

“Um…My apologies. It was still just an experiment so…Ah, I was planning to give my report if the experiment succeeded!” I didn’t lie. I was still just experimenting with the canning method, so I thought it was too early to make an official report.

“Experiment, huh? I see. But today you’re going to open those things you’ve been saving for 10 days, right?”

The only reason he would know that…Lapilia-sama averted my eyes. Oh, come on!

“…That was my plan. But we need to wait for another 5 days to see if the experiment has truly succeeded.”

I answered, then, with a resolute tone, Rays-sama said, “That’s fine. If your experiment succeeded, not only would it benefit the soldiers of our countries, it would also solve the sailors’ problem of nutrition, and would even benefit the exports of goods from our country. If your experiment is successful, our country will reap a lot of benefits.”

I tried to keep my face calm, but I was amazed inside.

To deduce all of that from the bare minimum explanation I gave to Lapilia-sama, how terrifying. No, should I say as expected of Rays-sama?

The Empire wanted distant countries to be able to do their trade on the Empire’s port. That was why the Empire started developing canned food.

The canned food ended up becoming popular not only among the merchants, but even with the sailors and the common citizens. To be honest, the usage of canned food for the military was more of a bonus.

“Really? I have never thought that far but you may be right.” Let’s act dumb.

“So the jars that Diku held were the experimental products? Lapilia showed me the ones with the jam. Show me the others.”

“Y-Yes, Sir!” .

After replying to Rays-sama with a loud voice, Diku immediately put the jars in his hand on the table in front of Rays-sama. Diku must be nervous because he got caught skipping training, by Rays-sama of all people.

“How many did you make?” asks Rays-sama

“I’ve made 5 for each type of food, but some of them have failed.”

I’ve already thrown away the failed product. Maybe they failed because there was still some air trapped in them.

“I see.”

“But there’s no guarantee that these canned foods are all successful products. You might get sick if you eat them.”

“It’s fine. Open them all, plate it, and bring the plates to me. Can you eat them raw?”

“Eating them raw should be fine, but we were planning to cook them.”

“Then bring two plates. One raw, one cooked.”

“…Rays-sama, pardon me for asking, but are you planning to eat them?”

“Of course. Lapilia told me about your experiment. That’s why I’m here.”

….Lapilia-sama, you…She immediately averted her eyes. Lapilia-sama, you knew that you were staring at an empty air, right!?

“Speaking of which, Lapilia-sama should’ve opened the jams on the 3rd, 5th, and the 7th days. How is the result?”

“As you can see, I’m fine.”

It was Rays-sama that answered my question. That meant the successful experimental product was eaten by Rays-sama…Yup. Lapilia-sama and Grantz-sama have completely sold me out.

“I understand. I’ll prepare the food for you but don’t blame me if you get sick.”

Rays-sama replied with a brief mischievous smile.
