The Battle of Hakusha Plain (4) – In The Midnight
“Let’s wait until tomorrow, as he said.”
“Wickharlt-sama!?”
“Roa-dono is Rays-sama’s proxy. His words are Rays-sama words. I can’t just ignore them.”
“Ugh…I understand.”
The old captain relented. The general has made his decision.
“Then, today’s plan is canceled. Thank you for coming this far, ?Roa-dono and Luzel-dono. You both must be exhausted, so please take some rest. We will resume the military council tomorrow. Will that alright for you?”
I was relieved. The 6th Division would be safe with this because there would be no battle tomorrow since the river would overflow.
General Wickharlt and the old captains would have time to cool down and make a better decision by waiting a few days for the river to quiet down. My job here would be done once that happened. What happened in my previous life would never happen again.
“Thank you for your consideration.”
After Captain Luzel said that, the captain and I stood up, bowed, and left the headquarter together.
?
….Strange. The river was tranquil.
I continued glancing at the river from the Luzel unit’s camp, which was separated from the 6th Division’s camp.
We didn’t set up camp near the 6th Division’s camp because we needed to make room for men from the 10th Division who would come later.
When I turned my sight to the 6th Division’s camp, I noticed smoke rising up. They must be getting ready for dinner. The sun was setting, and the 6th Division appeared to have no plans to attack Frankurlt’s troops. I stroke my chest in relief.
I hope the river would overflow soon…
There was no sign of rain here, but the river could overflow if heavy rain occurred at the upper stream. But there was no indication that would happen for the time being.
Could I have altered history a little because I came here as Rays-sama’s proxy? It would be inconvenient if that were the case. If the river does not overflow, the 6th Division could attack Frankurlt army.
I needed to come up with another excuse for tomorrow. I have to buy some time until Rays-sama arrives.
“What’s wrong?”
Captain Luzel asked in a worried tone.
“…I was just thinking the river didn’t overflow.”
“Ah, if the river overflows, the military council tomorrow will be easier.”
Captain Luzel expressed his concern in this manner. He was probably thinking of Scuderia-san as well.
“But, well, it’s not like staring at the river will change anything. We can only pray that heaven will aid us. Just eat and sleep well to prepare for tomorrow’s council. We’ve been marching for three days, so you must be exhausted.”
“…I will do so.”
As the sun sank, the river remained quiet.
However, the situation abruptly changed that night.
?
I fell asleep early due to exhaustion, but I was startled awake by Captain Luzel’s voice.
“Did something happened?”
“Yeah. Something terrible happened.”
Despite the darkness, I could sense the captain’s anxiety. So I got up quickly. Another person entered the tent as though waiting for me to finish putting on my coat.
“Raimaru-san?”
Because of the darkness, it was a bit difficult to determine who came in, but it was Raimaru-san, the young captain who disagreed with attacking the Frakurlt army during the military council today. He appeared to be nervous, exactly like Captain Luzel.
“Wait a minute, let me light the candle…”
“No, it’s fine like this, or, rather, it’s better for us to talk like this,” stated Captain Luzel. Did that mean Raimaru-san arrived here secretly?
“Because we don’t have much time, Roa-dono, I’ll get right to the point. Wickharlt-sama has chosen to launch an attack on the Frankurlt army. He intends to cross the river before dawn with a small troop.”
“WHAT!?”
“Roa, lower your voice,” Captain Luzel warned.
“What exactly happened?” I asked, frowning. “Didn’t we just make the decision to wait until tomorrow?”
“Yes, but something unexpected has happened.”
?
Scuderia kept glancing towards the opposite shore, where the Frankurlt camp stood, after it was determined that the army would wait until tomorrow.
Then Scuderia noticed numerous Gorber Kingdom troops openly erecting something on the riverbank.
The Gorber Kingdom’s troops were setting up a helmet.
Scuderia recognized that helmet right away. After all, it was the helmet worn by the general with whom he had battled many times on the battlefield.
It was the helmet of General Nisol, the previous General of the 6th Division.
The Gorber soldiers were mocking Scuderia by putting that helmet in front of him.
I couldn’t image how Scuderia was feeling.
Scuderia immediately ran to the headquarter of the 6th Division and begged General Wickharlt in tears, “Please! At the very least, let me cross the river by myself!”
Scuderia was the one who whipped the chaotic 6th Division into shape following General Nisol’s death and also convinced the hesitant commanders to choose General Wickharlt as the new general. Scuderia was a comrade in whom General Wickharlt had great trust.
That Scuderia begged General Wickharlt in tears. General Wickharlt must have believed he couldn’t stop Scuderia any longer.
I took a deep breath as I listened to Raimaru-san’s story.
It appeared like fate would once again throw the 6th Division into chaos.
