The Battle of Hakusha Plain (7) – Surprise Attack

“Roter! The enemies are on your rear! Help him, Etenra!”

Wickharlt fires his bow while paying attention to his surroundings.

Wickharlt’s arrows continued to pierce the Gorber warriors’ skulls even though it was dark. It wasn’t a fluke, but rather a skill. Wickharlt has been launching arrows after detecting the movement of his opponent.

Wickharlt really lived up to his title, shooting arrows with incredible accuracy in the center of the formation. His arrow frequently saved the part of the formation that was on the verge of collapsing.

Every time Wickharlt shot his arrow, his friends cheered, and his unit gained momentum. Despite this, his troops never advanced. The enemy’s ferocity was nothing compared to before. They clearly had the intent to eliminate Wickharlt’s unit this time.

Wickharlt shot his arrows while delivering instructions to his comrades. He believed that by doing so, he would be able to lead his men to safety.

“Their momentum is quite fierce…Please accept my heartfelt apologies, Wickharlt-sama.”

Scuderia said with a bow.

“What are you apologizing for?”

“Everything turned out to be precisely how Raimaru predicted. Wickharlt-sama, you suffer as a result of my selfishness…”

“…Are you looking down on me, Scuderia? It was I who wanted revenge. It was my decision to support your idea because I believed it had a possibility of succeeding. Everyone, hear me! We’ve received Nisol-sama’s helmet, the finest prize we could wish for, so we have to return and put the helmet in front of Nisol-sama’s grave, without a single person missing!”

“Ou!!!!”

The unit responded fiercely, but the gap in numbers between the Frankurlt army and the Wickharlt’s troop was so great that the annihilation of the Wickharlt’s troop was just a matter of time.

?

Messengers come and go to Frankurlt, who has established a tent some distance from the battle. Because the surroundings were dark, the messenger’s information was the only thing he could rely on.

“As expected for the person dubbed the Blue Bow at that age.”

His aide expressed astonishment.

The title “10 Master of Bow” was granted to those who were well-known for their archery talents throughout the continent. The list of persons varies according to the nation or the narrator, but the name Blue Bow Wickharlt has always been included.

“But he’s only a second-rate general, no, a less-than-third-rate general,” Frankurlt continued.

Although Frankurlt was unaware of Wickharlt’s circumstances, he believed Wickharlt was more than a reckless warrior. Most likely, he carried out the surprise attack to protect someone he didn’t want to die, or he did it to demonstrate his bravery to his soldiers. Or was he simply overconfident, believing he could pull off the attack and return safely?

It didn’t matter to Frankurlt what the cause was.

Wickharlt should have abandoned the individuals who advised him to enter the obvious trap.

Putting his own life and the lives of his troop in danger for the sake of a few individuals was a terrible decision. Wickharlt was unsuitable to be a general if he failed to understand that.

On the other hand, despite being his opponent, Frankurlt must acknowledge the deceased General Nisol’s brilliance. Sakuri’s strategy could have wiped out the whole 6th Division if General Nisol made the wrong decision, but the general could make the choice that resulted in the least amount of damage. Even though the general died, he made the best decision he could at the time.

“Nisol, you raised your disciple poorly.”

Frankurlt felt a little pity. But with this, they could cripple the 6th Division, allowing Gorber army in the south to advance.

“Tell everyone not to overdo it. They can’t cross the river, so they are trapped. No reinforcement for them will come. If they survived until dawn, we might even show our enemy the sight of their general’s defeat.”

“Understood.”

“But make sure to annihilate them. Especially Wickharlt, make sure to kill him.”

Frankurlt was now sure that Wickharlt’s troops would fail to turn the tide.

But suddenly, a new messenger rushed in.

“The enemy attacked our army from behind!” the messenger exclaimed loudly.

?

“So this is the limit…”

Wickharlt has used up all of his arrows, and several of his soldiers have fallen. Regrettably, this appears to be their limit.

My apologies, Nisol-sama. I could not protect the soldiers and the 6th Division that you have entrusted to me….

A drop of water runs down Wickharlt’s cheek. It was unclear if the drop was his tears or sweat.

This was the end. Then, at the very least, Wickharlt chose to die gloriously as a general.

Just as Wickharlt made his decision and put his hand on the sword on his wrist, he heard a scream and the enemy’s momentum slowed down.

“What happened?”

Because of the darkness, Wickharlt couldn’t determine what had occurred, but he could hear the sound of battle.

“Did the enemy have an internal conflict?”

The sound of battle grew closer to Wickharlt.

“No way….”

Was it a reinforcement? Impossible! Who can send us reinforcements?

The new army broke through the Gorber army’s line and arrived near Wickharlt’s troops just as Wickharlt began to feel confused.

“Why are you here!?”

“I’ll explain later!”

Roa yelled while desperately clinging to his horse.
