Let’s Decide the Flag!

“Argh…I can’t come up with anything…”

Here I was, trying to come up with our flag’s design in a square near the 10th Division’s quarter.

I have to decide on the flag’s design by today and tell it to Nelfia. Honestly, the mock battle with Prince Ural was far easier than this.

At first, I was thinking in a room but because I couldn’t get any idea, I decided to get some fresh air outside but I still couldn’t come up with anything.

Rufa was drawing pictures on the ground using a stick beside me. Though I think she was past the age of having fun with drawing pictures on the ground, some kind of strange switch seemed to be flipped inside of her causing her to draw all kinds of things to her heart’s content.

Since Rufa’s drawing could become a trigger for my inspiration, I was fine with that.

“Prince Zeland, what are you doing?”

What bothered me was Prince Zeland’s existence here. Really, how did he know that we were here….

And why was he looking at Rufa’s drawing like some kind of art connoisseur?

“I’ve gotten the permission of my Father to come here! He said this is my free time!”

Ah, right, right, good for you. So why don’t you just leave and spend your precious free time doing something more fun? Well, I couldn’t say that to a Prince though.

Rufa ignored Prince Zeland and just kept drawing. Really, what with this situation?

Ah, no, no, this wasn’t the time to care about Prince Zeland. I have to think about the flag’s design.

There was also the drawing of three stars and a bull, the Roudel family’s crest, among Rufa’s many drawings. Zackhart-sama used a similar design with two stars instead of three for his army’s flag.

For people who have their own family crest, it was common to use a slightly altered version of that crest as their flag. Other common designs include the commander’s favorite weapon or the combination of their favorite plant and animal.

“Roa-dono, how about using the four-eyed lion?”

Prince Zeland innocently suggested, but there was no way I could use the royal family’s crest. Getting scolded would be the least of my worries!

“I see…But I think it will be best if you use some kind of animal for the design…”

“An animal…Well, it’s true that I don’t have a family crest and I also don’t have any favorite weapon so an animal will be a safe pick…”

The problem was I didn’t know what kind of animal I should use.

An animal…Horse?. Well, I have Aro, and our Roa Brigade was a cavalry so it suited us but… using a horse for the brigade’s flag would also spell trouble.

The two captains of our brigade have a deep love for horses so they would agree immediately to use horse for the flag but then…they would argue constantly about the type of horse we should use, their color, etc… My head hurt even just imagining it. Rudek might end up getting destroyed before their argument even ended.

Other types of animal…fish? I was from a fishing village anyway. If not fish…seagull? No, using a seagull seemed a bit weird.

Some of Rufa’s drawings included a cat, a rabbit, and a piglet. I couldn’t use rabbit since Lapilia-sama already using it. Maybe cat? No, a cat felt a bit too cute for an army’s flag.

“What is this?” Prince Zeland asked, pointing at one of the drawings.

“Mole” Rufa answered nonchalantly. She was really absorbed in drawing.

Despite that, Prince Zeland still looked happy as he said, “I wonder what kind of animal a mole is…”

Hmm? Prince Zeland seemed to like Rufa?

Well, whatever. Thinking about the flag’s design was more important now.

Then, Rufa’s hand, which had been moving for a long time, suddenly stopped. She then turned towards me, and said, “Roa, I think birds are the best choice for your brigade.”

Rufa hadn’t drawn a single bird so why suddenly?

When I asked her reason she just answered with, “Just a feeling.” a feeling, huh?

“A bird? I think it’s a great idea!” Prince Zeland agreed

He probably would agree with anything that Rufa suggested.

“Bird…Bird at this season…swan or duck?”

“Roa-dono, there’s also starling.”

While Prince Zeland and I were naming birds commonly seen in the winter, Rufa looked at me confusedly and said, “If you’re talking about birds in winter, it’s swallows.”

“Swallows? but they are usually active in warmer seasons, like summer. I mean, they raise their children in summer.”

Rufa tilted her head in confusion at my words.

Eh? I was also confused so I asked Rufa about it. It turned out that in the southern continent swallows were seen in the winter but in the northern continent swallows were seen in the summer. Now that I think about it, I never saw swallows in winter.

Swallows… swallows…hmm…Come to think of it, wasn’t there a superstition that having a swallow nest on your house meant good luck? Because having a swallow nest on your house means your house is safe?

Swallow on our flag…that didn’t sound bad.

“Swallow sounds good,” I said.

“I agree. Let’s go with swallow!” Rufa agreed.

As for Prince Zeland…well, he would agree with whatever Rufa said.

“It feels a little empty with just swallow. Why don’t you add a plant too? Maybe olive, the symbol of wisdom?”

Prince Zeland’s words have a point, but using the symbol of wisdom felt embarrassing…

“Not a bad idea but…”

“What about the moon?” Rufa pointed to the drawing of three stars and a bull.

The moon. Moon and swallow. It seems like an unrelated combination, but it might be interesting to use.

“Should we use a full moon? Or crescent moon?” Prince Zeland asked Rufa.

“Which one do you think is better?” Rufa asked Prince Zeland back, and the Prince began to think.

“I think the crescent moon is better. The design can be a swallow flying in the crescent moon?”

Good idea, Prince!

With this, The rough design of the flag has been decided. The rest, I would leave it to Nelfia.

Thus, the flag of the Roa Brigade was decided to be “swallow in the crescent moon.”
