Zetta Great War (13) – The Third Day – Turning Point

The morning of the third day arrived, and I couldn’t sleep last night. I was now at a watchtower in the fortress. Wickharlt and others insisted I rest, but I needed to check the Gorber army’s movements first.

Although the Gorber army suffered damage in the two days of battle, they likely had at least 15000 soldiers left. If they attacked with their entire army, they would win today. Even if we managed to defend to fortress in the day, the night raid would bring the fortress down.

I created that plan to buy time. In one day, the snow would fall…hopefully.  The snow, or to be more specific, the prediction of Sakuri, the enemy strategist, was our only hope.

Gorber’s actions today would determine Kitsar Fortress’s fate. Hence, I couldn’t afford to sleep yet.

If Gorber attacked with their entire army, I must advise everyone to retreat. If they didn’t listen, I’d flee, even if it was just us, the Roa Brigade. If even the Roa Brigade didn’t listen, I’d flee by myself. No matter what, I couldn’t die here. This was my determination and mine alone.

To decide whether to flee or not, I needed to know Gorber’s movement. That was why I was here.

But today, Gorber’s army movements are unusually slow. By this time in the previous two days, they had already made some movements, but today, they remain silent.

“Why haven’t they moved yet~?”

Hogg-san and Boltras-sama join me on the watchtower.

If Gorber destroyed this watchtower, Kitsar Fortress would fall. I was a little amused at such thoughts.

“Roa-chan, how about getting some rest?” Hogg-san looks at me with a slightly worried expression. Seeing me smile, he might think I’ve gone a bit crazy due to tiredness.

“I’m okay. I’ll check Gorber’s movement, then take a little rest.” Even as I said that, I didn’t take my eyes off the enemy’s camp.

“They moved.” Finally, the Gorber army started moving.

There were two armies, Zegabain’s army and one other army that moved toward us. Even after I waited a bit, Gorber’s remaining two armies didn’t make any movement.

“It seems like… the plan that Wickharlt risked his life for… succe…”

I didn’t remember what happened after that.

“Ah, you’re finally awake. To sleep at a time like this, you’re surprisingly bold.”

When I open my eyes, Lapilia-sama is in front of me.

“Lapilia-sama…? Nah, no way you’re here. I must be dreaming. It would be great if you were here though…”

As I was about to close my eyes again, Lapilia-sama lightly hit my forehead.

“Don’t sleep again! Get up!”

After I was completely awake, I saw that Lapilia-sama was indeed in front of me.

“Why are you here?”

“Why, Of course, I’m here to help you.”

“That means the 10th Division is here!?” I jumped out of the bed, and Lapilia-sama shook her head, “Sorry to disappoint, but only the Lapilia Brigade is here.”

Huh? What’s going on here?

“Wait, what time is it?”

“It’s already night,” Wickharlt answered

So I ended up sleeping for the entire day?

“What’s the current situation!? What happened to the fortress!?”

Lapilia-sama snorted at my flustered questions, “Are you still half asleep? I’m here right now, so, of course, the fortress is fine.”

“We didn’t suffer any major damage. The opponent didn’t attack with all of their army. I think it’s thanks to your strategy, Roa-dono,” Wickharlt added.

“I see… that’s great… so, Lapilia-sama, why are you here?”

“I told you, I’m here to help.”

“But since Rays-sama isn’t here, he must still be fighting in the south…so why…”

“In the first place, I was instructed by Rays-sama to follow after you while bringing supplies for Kitsar Fortress. The preparation of the supplies was delayed, so I ended up being the last one to leave Rudektard. Actually, I came close to the fortress yesterday, but the battle was fierce, there’s no opening I can take advantage of to enter the fortress, so I’ve been wondering what to do.”

“I see…”

“If push comes to shove, I was planning to ditch the supplies and rescue the fortress, but today, the enemy’s attack finally eased, so I managed to enter the fortress.”

Strange. If it was the Lapilia Brigade, it would be possible to break through the enemy’s formation and forcefully enter the fortress.

Probably noticing my thought, Lapilia-sama raised the corner of her mouth like Rays-sama often did and said, “I just don’t want to damage the ‘souvenirs’ I brought.”

“Souvenirs?”

“Yup. I’m talking about this.”

On her left hand, Lapilia-sama was holding a crossbow.

T/N: I like Roa’s decision here. I think Roa’s plan to run away if they got defeated wasn’t because he’s a coward. Roa is the only person that knew the future. He’s the only person that can possibly change the history, and he know that. So even if it’s seems ‘cowardly’ to run away, he will still run, since if he died, the history (Rudek got destroyed and stuff)  will probably just repeat itself.

I agree with the kind of thinking that running away is better than dying. I mean, by running away, you still can do better next time, but if you die, then it’s the end. Also, I just noticed I made a mistake in chapter numbering yesterday, the content is right though. I’ve fixed it. Sorry!
