Chapter 7-9
After lunch.
“Ah, Clo-kun!”
They were on a short break before continuing their discussion.
Clovis, who was mindlessly looking at the Held’s cityscape from the guest room, heard a voice, calling out to him from the entrance of the room.
The aide turned and found the source of the voice, Jude, leaning on the door.
“I’ve been looking for you! Can you help me for a bit? I promise it won’t take long!”
Clovis was then brought to one of the rooms that they visited back when Jude gave them a tour of the mansion, the room where the Nicole family stored their collections. The room, the Oriental Room was its name, had plates made of porcelains all over the wall and it was the young lord’s favorite room.
Jude called Clovis into the room and asked him to hold a chair, he said it was to prevent the chair from moving around needlessly. He then climbed the chair and began fixing one of the plates’ stands on the wall.
“Thank you for your help. The servants probably bent this thing a little when they cleaned it earlier. It bothered me quite a bit when I first saw it, so I decided to fix it.”
Jude smiled cheerfully as he looked up at the wall with satisfaction. Clovis, who stood next to him, turned his glance toward the plates, each one of them was so good that they could be called masterpieces.
“How did you manage to collect this much porcelains?”
“Ah, only a few of them I actually bought myself. Most of them are the collections of my predecessors, you see? I’m just here to keep the dust off the goods.”
Jude said as he picked up a nearby plate, and stroke it lovingly.
“In our territory, we are also doing our own research about porcelains.”
“Really?”
Clovis turned his gaze toward the man next to him. His eyes were wide open, showing his disbelief.
The porcelain was a product from overseas. It had a smooth, beautiful white surface that was covered with vivid paintings on it. The noble of the kingdom loved to collect it as decorations. However, the method of manufacturing it was not something that was known by the kingdom’s craftsmen. While they managed to create something that resembled it, it still paled by comparison to the real thing that was made overseas.
Because of this, the collectors from various countries, including Heilland and Eardal had been trying to start their own research about porcelains in their own territories. Though, Clovis didn’t expect that the Marquis of Rozen himself would be among those people.
“Various people visited this city after all. I was able to ask a merchant who’s knowledgeable about the porcelains, they told me that clay is an important part of its creations. I like the porcelains a lot, so, I decided to do my own research for them, besides if I succeed in manufacturing it myself, I’ll be able to make a lot of money.”
“The royal family of all over the continent would be ordering them in droves, I’m sure.”
“At that time, if we have our trading company established, they would be able to be our intermediates and we’ll get even more profit from it.”
After gently wiping the surface of the porcelain with his sleeve, Jude carefully placed it back in its place on the wall. As he watched, Clovis thought that this room described the history of the Nicole family itself.
A family, whose eyes had been trained to distinguish and gather the best of the best among the products that were gathered in the port city, where only the best products were traded, in result, eliminating most of the useless and troublesome products out of their collections, leaving only the products that had some kind of value there.
“If that’s all, then, please excuse me.”
“You, you’re Graham’s relative, aren’t you?”
Clovis bowed lightly and was about to leave the room when that sentence stopped him in his track. The aide turned around, his body was tense, only to see Jude’s smile while stretching his hand toward him.
“Don’t get so defensive, I’m not going to eat you. That reaction pretty much answered my question by itself though.”
“Zack Graham is my grandfather.”
Clovis replied, his face was devoid of any emotion. He was used to being asked this kind of question due to his appearance, but he couldn’t help but put his guard up since he didn’t know whether Jude was on their side or not.
He had sworn that he wouldn’t let his origin become a thorn in Alicia’s side. When that time came, he swore to do his best to tear down that notion people had of him, or else, he wouldn’t be able to forgive himself.
He wondered, what will the Marquis of Rozen do after hearing that fact?
In contrast to Clovis, who kept his guard up and observed the other party closely for the sake of both his loyalty to the Princess and his own pride, Jude simply raised his voice in joy.
“So you are his grandson! No wonder your hair and eye color are the same as his!”
“You’ve noticed? Since when?”
“Since you got out of the carriage, I guess. I mean, black hair is rare in Graham’s family itself, let alone the whole kingdom. After the incident, the Grahams completely hid themselves from public eyes, never in my wildest dream did I imagine that I would speak to one of them!”
Knowing the Graham family meant knowing what that man, Zack Graham, had done in the past. Despite this, there was no hatred in Jude’s eyes, only curiosity.
Jude chuckled after seeing Clovis’ doubtful face.
“Me and Clo-kun are more alike than I thought! We’re both outcasts in the noble society and hated by the nobles. That brought up the question… Why did you become the aide of the Princess?”
“What do you mean ‘why’?”
“I understand that she is a peculiar person, especially for a Princess, but you know, one person’s ideal will never be enough to run a country.”
I know you are smart enough to understand that, Jude added. Clovis lowered his gaze.
“You understand all of this, but you still chose to serve her. Can I know why?”
The reason why I serve Princess Alicia…
Unconsciously, Clovis looked at his right hand. The sensation when she grabbed his hand with her small hands still lingered there.
Needless to say, it was at that ceremony that he made up his mind to support Alicia. But now, was that the only reason why he served her?
After a while, the aide shook his head slowly as if to answer that question.
