(Side Story) The Queen’s Fate 2

There are three days left until the execution date.

There’s still a chance. While gnawing on the cold, hardened bread, Tia clung to that piece of hope.

The favor she asked of the guard had been confirmed to reach Risel’s ears. Now, all that was left to do was to wait for him.

The time spent waiting is long. Days went by when she would look up at the sound of a noise, look at the door, and be discouraged.

She put aside the breakfast tray and spent another day merely gazing at the faint view outside.

However, the time that Tia had been hoping for finally arrived.

The sound of the door leading to the surface opening echoed. Along with a faint light, Tia saw the figure of Risel she had been longing for.

The guard bows his head. Risel thanked him, though she couldn’t hear him, and then threw a glance at the cell that contained Tia.

“Risel…!”

The image of a mother, trembling with emotion, is brought to life by Tia. As he neared the cell, she reached out her hand towards Risel.

“I missed you so much…!”

A single tear overflowed and fell. She looks over at Risel to see how he will react when he sees his mother shedding tears.

His reaction was significantly different from what Tia had imagined.

She had hoped to elicit his sympathy and somehow gain salvation from him.

Now, there was not an ounce of sympathy in the way he looked at Tia. He simply observed the pitiful figure in silence.

“Risel…?”

Anxiety crept in as she observed his demeanor. Still, she can’t afford to give up.

Tia changed her mindset and spoke to her son.

“I understand if you can’t forgive me, my son. I also wonder why things turned out like this… I’m sure it must be some kind of mistake.”

She has to appeal somehow. She has to tell her son in a compassionate manner.

But Tia still doesn’t know how to get sympathy from her child. All she knew was how to deal with the opposite sex. Nonetheless, she possessed the knowledge.

“I know my mistakes will never be forgiven… but I just wanted you, my son, to understand…”

“Your son…?”

Risel, who had remained silent until now, spoke in a colder tone than Tia had expected.

“I never expected to hear such words from you. I don’t remember even once receiving motherly affection from you before.”

“Risel…? N-No, that’s not true. I’ve always wanted to, but you’re the one who’s to become the next king. I know it sounds cold, but I was taught that to push you away is to love you. The truth is….”

“Enough, Mother.”

Tia became anxious when her words were interrupted.

Looking up at Risel’s face, Tia knew that the plan had ended in failure.

‘I can’t let this go on.’

“Risel, please, Risel! Please get me out of here!”

Tia screamed, regardless of her pretense.

“Please! I don’t want to die yet! Risel!”

“How many people have been sentenced to death in the same way and lost their lives at this place, Mother?”

Tia’s eyes were flashing with a trace of tears as she glared at him, a deep crease furrowing her brow.

“Has Mother ever shown even a hint of compassion? How many lives have been taken by Mother? Among them… weren’t there those who were supposed to become my siblings?”

Tia couldn’t say anything. Because Risel’s words were true. Before she could think of any excuses, Risel began to speak again.

“There was a time when I called you ‘Mom.’[1] Do you remember when I started calling you ‘Mother’? Let’s see… do you know how old I was when I successfully hunted for the first time?”

The questions came one after the other, and Tia thought and thought about it, but couldn’t come up with an answer.

Because she really didn’t know.

She must have attended events related to him, but she couldn’t remember how old Risel was at that time.

Tia didn’t see Risel’s face, who had understood everything from her expression. She had no room to think about how much sorrow Risel had etched into his words.

“Do you know the first person I fell in love with? ….I was in love with Marie Edigma, the person you used to set a trap.”

Hearing the name ‘Marie,’ Tia remembered the maid she had recently used to trap Reynaldo. And at the same time, she remembered Rosemary.

“That woman… it’s her…”

She mutters under her breath.

“It’s always like this. Rosemary is always in my way. Yes, she’s the one who screwed me over. Hey Risel, that maid is an evil woman! She has you and Lord Reynaldo fooled. I was set up by that woman!”

Risel shouted at his own mother, who was swearing at Marie and Rosemary’s name as if she had broken down.

“You brought all this on yourself! You treated other people’s lives like objects and deceived others. Why can’t you understand that this is the result of your own actions?”

Risel had nothing left to feel for his biological mother. He had never received love from his parents since he was a child. The Risel that used to want to win his mother’s love no longer exists.

His mother’s crime was too serious for him to show her some mercy. Selling out one’s country to another is not something that can be tolerated, no matter how much you are a member of the royal family. She probably doesn’t understand that if he shows even the slightest mercy, it’ll shake the people’s trust in the royal family.

It was precisely because he had become the king that Risel had to remain cold-blooded.

And he was on the verge of directing his overwhelming frustration towards Tia.

He couldn’t forgive the fact that she had kidnapped the only girl he had ever cared about. Even though he was now in an unsuitable position to express his feelings, his love for Marie remained unchanged.

Even in his position as king, there wasn’t a day that went by when he didn’t think about his future with Marie.

If only she didn’t have Rosemary’s memories, her feelings toward the royal family might have been different.

Born to parents who were responsible for Rosemary’s death, Risel didn’t have the courage to continue confessing his feelings to Marie.

The days when Risel was able to continue thinking about Marie were short.

The days after meeting Marie and expressing his feelings for her. Even that short period of time was very dear to Risel.

“Mother. Today will be the last time I speak to you directly. Please use your life to make amends to those who have lost their lives to you..”

“Risel, you’re so cruel… too cruel…”

Leaving Tia, who was still mumbling to herself, Risel returned the way he came.

He still has a lot of things to do. There was no time allowed for even a moment of mercy.

The door opened with a faint light and then closed with a heavy thud.

Translator Notes:

1. Actually, the translated word should be “Mother” but in less formal terms than the second one in the sentence. But to avoid any confusion, I’ll just be using “Mom” to make it easier. ?
