(Alberto’s POV) The Former Knight and the False Knight

Soon after his feelings for Marie developed, Risel summoned Alberto to one of the guest rooms. Although it was usually utilized for meetings and designated for Risel’s free use, today he called him there to have a private conversation.

Alberto entered the room and saluted Risel without showing any signs of being tired even though he had just finished his work for the day.

“I’m sorry for calling you so suddenly.”

“No need to worry about it.”

Right now, Risel was dressed in formal clothes, with his fiery red hair and tailored clothing made of embroidery and high-quality fabrics, just like a prince. Just by observing his appearance, Alberto understood that he was doing some kind of diplomatic work.

“What is the matter? Is it a report on the expedition?”

Alberto asked him what he thought was the reason for the call, but Risel shook his head.

“I have a favor to ask.”

“A favor….?”

Not an order, but a personal request.

With skepticism arising from Risel’s rare words, Alberto patiently awaited his next words in silence.

“There’s a woman who has piqued my interest. I wanted to borrow the training grounds for a while during the lunch break… Is that possible?”

“No, no. It’s not a problem at all. Please feel free to use it as you wish.”

Alberto responded a little vigorously to the unexpected remark.

“Have you met Duke Rose yet? I conveyed your request to him just the other day.”

“We’ve met. I’ve informed him as well. I haven’t revealed the other person’s name yet, though.”

“I see.”

Alberto is silent.

He’ll probably make his next move soon.

Although Alberto is not exactly sure, he grasps from Reynaldo’s perspective that the ongoing selection of a fiancée for Prince Risel is connected to Rosemary’s revenge.

It’s only his speculative, but he believes that Reynaldo is deliberately molding the future queen of the royal family, tracing the past, and intending to falsely accuse Queen Tia, much like what happened with Rosemary.

While Alberto is also involved in the cooperation, there should be considerations of using Prince Risel as the focal point for King Gray’s downfall, allowing him and his future queen to administer punishment to King Gray and Queen Tia.

Presently, in a place unknown to Prince Risel and the other fiancée candidates, Reynaldo is closely monitoring them.

He keeps tabs on which young ladies belong to which faction, which families are exerting pressure on which factions, and so on.

According to Reynaldo, “These ladies are a straightforward depiction of politics.”

Despite being willing to cooperate, Alberto is observing quietly because there are many things he doesn’t understand. And all he could do was pity the prince who was sadly being used as a tool.

Then came the good news.

Alberto is happy to hear that Risel, whom he adored like a younger brother, has fallen in love.

Even if he was the child of the one who got Rosemary killed, Alberto had always treated Risel as an individual.

Above all, having observed Risel since childhood, Alberto realized that he was just another victim of those two.

A child born out of obligation. A child unloved by his parents.

He was raised to be a political tool, so despite the potential intention to use him similarly, Alberto still wanted to treat him as a person.

That was his honest feeling.

“Is it okay to ask who the other person is?”

“… You’ll find out eventually anyway. Since we’re using the training grounds.”

“Is that so?”

And that day came unexpectedly early.

A few days had passed since the conversation with Risel.

While passing by the training grounds, Alberto instinctively halted at the sight he saw.

Risel and a woman were chatting.

‘Is that her?’

From a distance, he couldn’t see her face clearly, but he thought she seemed like a gentle young lady.

Her age seems to be close to Risel’s. Judging by her attire, which was the palace maid uniform, Alberto thought she likely was one of the fiancée candidates this time.

However, Risel’s dark hair made him realize that he was hiding his identity.

‘What’s the use of hiding your identity….’

Continued pretense does not make for a good relationship.

Eventually, someone unrelated may whisper the truth to the young lady.

Besides, if she’s here as a fiancée candidate, wouldn’t she be open to the possibility of being chosen by the prince?

‘Maybe I can give you a little bit of an opening?’

Deciding to meddle a bit, he approached them.

Incidentally, when Alberto later recounted this incident to Reynaldo, the response he got was, “You might as well be kicked to death by a horse.”[1]

“Risel-sama?”

Translator Notes:

1. I think this is an old proverb that sounds something like, “Those who interfere with others’ love affairs should be kicked by a horse and die.” It says that the proverb suggests strong disapproval for meddling in someone else’s romantic relationships. ?
