Truth and Confession

Today was the day we chose dresses that would be lent out in the dressing room.

Due to the overwhelming number of maids eager to borrow, we were called in order. As it was done by rank, I was in the latter part of the order.

Niki, who had already finished choosing, excitedly shared details about the dressing room. She told me that there were too many to choose from and that there was not enough time, but she had already reserved a high-quality, fashionable dress.

I had been in the dressing room a few times in my past life as Rosemary, and upon entering, the scenery hadn’t changed much from what I remembered. While there were more glamorous varieties of dresses and some newly replaced old chairs, I entered the room with a sense of nostalgia, gazing absent-mindedly at the rows of dresses.

I reminisced about the time when my friend, a seamstress, and I were sewing dresses for the debutantes. Finding a mermaid line dress similar to that time, I picked it up.

I entered the fitting room and tried on the dress.

A light orange dress with flowing embroidery. I liked the ribbon-like design flowing from the left shoulder to the sleeve, which was a cute touch.

After checking my whole body in the full-length mirror, I take off the dress and change back into my casual clothes.

“I’ll choose this one.”

“Already? Are you sure?”

The servant who was standing by looked at me in surprise as I handed her the dress. Observing other maids shuttling back and forth with multiple dresses, it was indeed odd for me to have made a decision after just one try.

“Yes. I’d also like to choose some accessories.”

“The accessories are in the next room.”

I left the dressing room and tried to proceed to the next room, but it was very crowded inside.

A wide range of accessories are available. From things like earrings, necklaces, and rings to anklets and even shoes.

Because of the large quantity, the room is thoroughly controlled to prevent theft, which is probably why it takes so long for each person.

Upon glancing around, even the maid who was called in the beginning was still struggling to make a choice.

‘At this rate, it looks like it won’t be over even after waiting for a whole day…’

I gave up on borrowing accessories and immediately exited the room.

Since I have the day off from work today, I ponder how to spend the remaining time.

Maybe I could go to the nearby town, which I rarely visit, and look at the accessories there.

Once I had the idea, I wanted to do it right away, so I went back to my room, put a small amount of money into my bag, and headed to the town.

After completing the necessary procedures for passage at the castle gate, I entered the town.

The town is bustling with many people. It’s so lively that just looking at it makes me feel excited.

I browsed around the stalls, checking out souvenirs for my family and friends. I also picked out some stationery for letters to send to my family.

Stopping at a bookstore I noticed on the way, I found several novels that hadn’t had sequels released in Edigma. Since there were too many to buy them all, I decided to buy only the novels I was most interested in continuing.

“Maybe I bought too much…”

I walk back the way I came, carrying the items that don’t fit in my bag in my hands.

Before I knew it, it was already past evening. If I don’t get back soon, I won’t be able to make it in time for dinner.

I returned a bit hastily and saw a large carriage parked at the castle gate entrance. Several knights surround the carriage. It’s probably ridden by a noble or a member of the royal family.

Bringing my running feet to a stop, I stood still right there.

As the carriage came to a stop, the surroundings greeted with salutes. I hurriedly bowed my head.

“Welcome back, Prince Risel.”

“Welcome back.”

The gate guards and servants call out Prince Risel’s name in unison.

As I lowered my head, my chest pounded loudly.

I’ve never seen Prince Risel this up close before.

?

If I raise my head now and see the prince’s face,

I will know the truth.

‘What should I do….?’

For some reason, I’m too scared to look up.

As I remained bowing stiffly, the presence of people gradually faded from my surroundings.

Nervously, I slowly lift my face. There was no sign of the people who were there a moment ago, and it was back to the usual scene in front of the castle gate.

‘I’m so relieved….’

I couldn’t help but let out a sigh of relief and smiled bitterly.

The ball is just a few days away, and the day when the truth will be revealed is getting closer, but it seems I don’t want to know until the last minute whether Risel-sama is the prince or not.

I regain my composure and walk through the castle gate.

Nodding at the gatekeeper I encountered earlier, he appears to remember me and gives a slight nod in return.

From the gate, I walk toward the building where the servants’ residences are located.

Entering the building from the side of the back gate, rather than the main street, there are fewer people around. The other maids are probably still at work or are taking their time choosing their outfits.

At this rate, there might be quite a few people who end up missing dinner.

When I was at the entrance of the building, someone suddenly grabbed my arm.

Startled by the sudden jolt, I dropped all the belongings I was holding in my hand.

“Eh….”

My body stiffens with fear at being suddenly grabbed. Unable to comprehend what was happening, I struggled desperately, but my movements were constrained.

‘What…? What happened?’

The realization hit me that someone was trying to restrain me.

Fear strikes me. Still, I forced my body to move, trying to escape somehow. However, my opponent was stronger than me and didn’t budge at all.

I tried to look at the other person’s face to at least see who it was, but before I could, my face was covered with a cloth. My efforts to scream were stifled as my mouth was held firmly.

‘No…! It’s no good if it stays like this!’

Using all my strength, I thrust my leg backward and kicked the person who was holding me down from behind. Fortunately, the heel of my shoe landed perfectly, and I heard a low male voice exclaim, “Ugh!” It was then that I confirmed that the assailant was a man.

I swung my arm as hard as I could, and when there was a momentary looseness, I forcefully rammed my body into the attacker.

The man collapses from the impact, and I also get knocked down with him. But I quickly rose to my feet and sprinted away.
