Chapter 41: Crafting skills and magic / solution
I thought about what I should start making and decided to start with seasonal items.
Since it’s summer, I made some light clothes. Although they are thinner, they are enchanted with durability, so they won’t tear apart anytime soon. However, they cannot be used as a substitute for armor. At least not with my current sewing skill level, though.
What about the classic swimsuits for summer events that are often seen in games? Hahaha, I can’t make something that dangerous.
That being said, can everyone swim? There are some cases where dungeons spawn at the bottom of lakes and oceans, so even if you can manage to resolve the problem of breathing underwater with equipment, you won’t be able to move around unless you can swim to some degree. … In case something happen, I guess we need to practice while it’s summer.
I tried making something like an air conditioner. Although I failed.
To be exact, the cost was too high to be worth it. As expected it was unreasonable to keep emitting the blizzard magic all time. I thought about using the heat exchange system, which is the original function of an air conditioner, but I decided against it for now because it seemed like it would be more complicated than simply blowing out cold air.
So instead, I created an electric fan, and for now it can blow wind by rotating the blades using magic stone energy instead of electricity. I can make it even cooler by placing ice in front of the blades. If you grant just normal MP instead of magic in a magic stone, it becomes a long-lasting battery. It’s also easy to refill. They sometimes break down, but they cost much less than air conditione
I also made a hair dryer using wind connections. This was achieved by using two types of magic, Breeze and Ignition, at the same time.
I first tried making it with heated air magic, but it was cheaper to use fire and wind separately. Even though it may sound like it’s a simple magic, it seems to be treated as a composite magic. When I combined holy attribute and thunder attribute during the core purification after the Zephyrus battle, I remember clearly that it took well more than the added MP cost of the two magics… It’s a shame that it’s not cost-effective when used as a single magic.
One drawback of the hair dryer is that it require continuous use of MP to produce hot air. This is the same reason why the ignition magic is only used to start a fire. Still, both of them are beginner class magics and don’t consume that much MP, so not only me, but also Fricka, who have a lot of mana, took a liking to it and will use it a lot in the future.
“Hmm. So, what is this tool called hair dryer used for?”*
“It dries your hair. You can use it to dry other things too if you want. It’s useful after taking a bath in the winter.”
“… Is that all?”
When I nodded, Uru looked somewhat taken aback and muttered this.
“… I thought about it when you made the electric fan, but this is even more luxurious…”
I was once told by the Earth God that it was a luxury, but… ‘It’s not essential, but isn’t it convenient to have?’ Do all things that I can say that give such impressions?
But I’m a modern person and if it’s convenient I’ll make it without hesitation. As expected, I have at least the rationality to not overuse materials to the point where I can no longer make essential items.
… I have it, okay?
While I was granting magic to a magic stone, trying to create useful goods, before I knew it the Earth God visited the workshop.
“Huh, is it okay to stay away from the altar?”
“Well, if it’s just this much, it’s fine.”
I wonder if the reason why she is keeping yer distance and don’t come too close to me is because she don’t want to disturb me or she is concerned about the contamination?
… It’s not like I’m acting strange and it weird off her, right? Everyone looks shocked at least once…!
Putting those sad thoughts aside, since a God is right in front of me, I thought I’d ask her what I was wondering about.
“By the way, Earth God, why a miko can’t use magic?”
“Huh? There’s no way that they can’t use it.”
“Eh?”
Even a miko can use magic…? In other words, the only reason that I can’t use it is the game’s settings, which are different in this world, so I’m just using it incorrectly…?
“It may be possible that you can’t use magic if you don’t have any aptitude for it, but… As long as you live in this world… Ah, I see.”
The earth god placed her hand on her chin and mumbled as if trying to gather her thoughts, then nodded in agreement.
And then, my heart pounded at the words that I was asked.
“Rion, how many years have you been ‘in this world’?”
‘In this world’ She put it in that way.
So this means that the earth god knows that I came from another world.
I hurriedly looked around and was relieved to see that no one else was there.
After taking a deep breath to calm my racing heart, I answered the Earth God’s question with a question.
“… Why did you know that?”
“That foo-… Promethea just told me about it.”
… Ah, from the creator god who brought me here. After all, they’re gods, so it’s natural for them exchange that much information.
But wasn’t this god trying to say “fool” just now? Even if she’s like that… No, it’s no good to say like that. Well, even if she’s a bit airhea-… She’s definitely the chief god, right?
“… Have you told anyone else?”
“What’s the point of going out of my way to spread the word? Is it a bad idea to say it in the first place?”
“… Because depending on the situation, don’t you think that they could say ‘What are you talking about?’ or ‘Is your head okay’?”
“…”
Ah, the Earth God averted her eyes. I’m sure she must have thought something like that about the creator god…!
As if to clear up the slightly awkward atmosphere, I answered belatedly.
“It’s only been a little over four months since I came here.”
“… I feel like you’re too much used to a miko’s power for that little time… But that’s fine. It’s just that Rion’s body isn’t used to this world.”
“Even though it’s a body prepared by the creator god?”
“Can you call it the creation attribute? Even if you can use the power of a miko, you probably don’t have enough of other attributes.”
It’s true that I was able to use the miko’s power from the first day, but… Hmm?
But it’s possible to grant magic to a magic stone. Is it because there is support from the magic table and catalyst?
As I said this out loud, the earth god gave me a surprising… Or perhaps a not that surprising answer.
“Well, it’s not because you are using magic, it’s because you are creating it.”
“… Yes? What do you mean?”
When I asked her for an explanation because I didn’t really understand what she meant, she roughly summarized it like this.
Magic is something that causes phenomena by ”consuming” the world’s energy (mana), but a Miko’s creation process consumes the world’s energy, but does not cause an immediate phenomenon, instead it is ‘processed’ in the form of an item.
Aren’t they both consuming energy in the same way? That’s what I thought, but there’s a difference between something you just use and something that generates even more energy while you use it.
… I wonder what’s going on with the equivalent exchange of energy, but… I suppose that’s because a miko can do that feat ?? that’s why it’s worth the title of “The miko of the Creator God.”
Furthermore, anyone can create energy by doing the same thing on a magic table (of course it depends on the magic skill level), but the amount of energy generated by a miko seems to be on a whole other level. This is in common to all other item creations. But there’s no way to me know how much is being generated by it with bare eyes, so I don’t have an idea of how much it is.
In any case, I somehow understand how magic is granted to magic stones. Now, about why I can’t use magic.
“Huh, are you saying that I will be able to use magic as time passes? Fricka said things like, “Your mana is being released, but it’s dissipating.”
“Hmm? Let me see it once.”
It’s embarrassing to show how I can fail to use even simple beginner magic in front of God…
But even if it’s embarrassing, I can gain some knowledge by doing it, so I endured it and chanted the ignition spell.
As usual, nothing happened. Gunnu…!
Maybe my magic (failure) was that bad, the earth god let out a sigh and said this.
“… Rion might be better giving up on using magic…”
“I’m a such hopeless case!?”
I was so shocked that I cried out, but the earth god replied with a wry smile and continued.
“I think it’s because of Promethea… But your body is too specialized for creation.”
It seems like all of my functions are completely devoted to creation and I don’t have any surplus left for anything else, that or my body unconsciously refuses to simply “waste energy”?
It seems like I’m mostly convinced, but I still don’t quite understand it.
Ah, another question has arisen.
“But I can use static electricity and the dig magic…”
“…… Hmm?”
The earth god frowned at my words.
Although it’s still not completely free, I can occasionally release lightning that is as strong as static electricity. I can barely do earth magic tillage dig.
I don’t think anything should happen if I couldn’t use magic… Does this mean I have an aptitude? In that case, if my aptitude increases in the future, I guess I’ll be able to use other magics as well.
I was asked to demonstrate, since static electricity is difficult, I took out an earth block and chanted the dig spell. The surface of the soil moved, albeit slightly.
The earth god had a difficult look on her face, but then she gently shook her head.
“… Rion, this is not magic.”
“Eh?”
“It wasn’t magic, but the result of wishing, “It would be nice if that happened” that led to the creation.”
“… In other words, this is something like “I’m making an item that look like this”…?”
The earth god nodded at my dazed murmur.
Eeeeeh… Seriously… I couldn’t believe I wasn’t even able to use dig, which I thought I was able to do…!
As I held his head and cried inside, the earth god patted me on the shoulder, the tone of her voice became somber, as if she was sympathetic.
“… Well, if you try hard, you might be able to do it someday. I can’t guarantee it though.”
… Why I feel like she gave up…
Waaann…
xxxxx
“… When it comes to lightning, it’s definitely influenced by ‘her’… Well, if Promethea approves of it, it’s not something I’m complaining about…”
The words that came out like a sigh didn’t reach anyone else’s ears.
