The spring rush waited for no one and it was the time when labour was needed. Breakfast was served by 6 o’clock the next morning and everyone started working by blowing the whistle at 6.30a.m. Han Qingsong took Erwang to the distant southeast slope while Dawang followed other members to work near the village. Maisui then helped Lin Lan take care of her brothers at home.

As for Sanwang, the adults decided to let him reflect for a day and educate him at night.

After Xiaowang woke up, he was in high spirits and had nothing to do. He ate a large bowl of millet porridge and eggs in one sitting.

Maisui touched his belly and said with a smile, “You’re finally healed, you truly scared us all to death.”

Xiaowang glanced at Sanwang and smiled at his mother and sister, “Mother, I was wrong. I will never go to the river again.”

Lin Lan said happily, “Xiaowang is so good.”

She glanced at Sanwang and said, “Your brother is fine now, so you don’t have to worry.”

Sanwang let out a dull sigh, finally realising that the food had some flavour.

Xiaowang held his hand and said, “Little Third Brother, I’m fine, don’t worry.”

Sanwang glanced at him and his eyes turned red again. It was good that his youngest brother didn’t have to be sent away.

Xiaowang quickly wiped his tears and winked at him to show that their secret would not be told.

Sanwang hurriedly lowered his head, tears dripping into the bowl.

Lin Lan wanted to talk to him about this issue and figure out the results of his reflection and whether he had realised his mistake. After all, he was still young and needed guidance to address some problems.

But, before she got involved in the topic, Dong Huaihua came to find her. Someone from the county’s Publicity Department wanted to come to inspect an issue and hold a meeting, which Lin Lan was called to.

Lin Lan told Maisui and the two children not to go out and stay at home.

Maisui led her two younger brothers to read and paint. Lin Lan had brought back some low-quality gouache paints and some paper for painting during her promotions and talks.

Xiaowang had a great time pulling Sanwang around.

While they busied themselves, Gaoliang, Yanyan and Caihua came by.

Maisui greeted them, “Why didn’t you guys go to work?”

“We’re going to cut the grass and pay our work points. I wanted to invite you to join us,” Gaoliang said.

Maisui shook his head, “I’m not going; I have to watch them.”

Yanyan said sheepishly, “Maisui, I’m so sorry,” Dawei was her paternal cousin and he was the one who bullied Sanwang. She felt very sorry and wanted to say something about it.

Maisui, on the other hand, did not express her anger and could tell the difference, “You are not him. You don’t need to say sorry when he makes mistakes,” Even if he was her sibling, the sisters didn’t need to apologise for their sake, let alone cousin.
