Han Qingsong, “Take a break. Reading at night will make your eyes tired.”
Lin Lan merely hummed in response without raising her eyes from the book, all while her left hand was still writing furiously.
Han Qingsong, “…” His wife was ignoring him a lot recently. She would always be reading a book intensively until she naturally fell asleep at 11pm.
He took her book away without saying anything and just looked at her. Although not tough, he was firm and his eyes showed a little of the grievance he felt.
Lin Lan, “…” Why are you being like Xiaowang?
She leaned over and kissed the corner of his lips, asking him to stop making a fuss as she had to finish reading and list the important points of the materials as soon as possible.
“Be good, stop causing trouble,” She smiled and reached out to touch his head.
Han Qingsong, “…” Unhappy, he directly picked her up with one arm, making it impossible for her to read.
Lin Lan giggled, “Third Brother…put me down,” She was not a child, how could she play like how Sanwang and Xiaowang messed around? How childish would it seem!
He let go of his tight grasp and let Lin Lan climb onto his back, carrying her.
Lin Lan hooked her arms around his shoulder, kissed his ear and laughed softly. She then said in a soft voice, “…Tonight… Alright, that’s enough, put me down and let me read a while longer.”
Han Qingsong, “…” I’m afraid you’ll get tired from all that reading! Of course, this is not bad either.
The couple was just being affectionate when the children rushed back from outside. Lin Lan then quickly slid down from Han Qingsong’s back.
“Mom, this is incredible, Eldest Brother caught a snake!” Sanwang and Xiaowang rushed in. Sanwang was excited as Xiaowang looked terrified. On the other hand, Maisui and Erwang came in first and Dawang rounded up the rear.
Lin Lan quickly picked up the lantern and shone it, “Let me see.”
Dawang showed Lin Lan the dead snake.
Sanwang said excitedly, “Father, Mom, listen to me.”
He told them in a chatterbox manner, “We went with Brother Haotian and Sister Gumi to look for cicada larvaes. The flashlight ran out of battery, so we used our hands to feel around the area instead. Sister Gumi then accidentally touched something soft, slippery and cold. She screamed, “Snake!” while the animal jumped onto her arm in shock! My brother was so fast that he caught the snake in a flash, so with a swoosh and a whoop…”
“He took a hemp rope from the ground, put it over the snake and shook it around. Then, the snake died soon after.”
Although she knew that the snakes here were non-toxic and didn’t tend to bite, Lin Lan was still a little nervous when she heard the story. Patting her chest, she commented, “It was a close call. Is your sister and your Eldest Brother okay?”
Dawang, “We’re fine. Snake meat tastes good, right?” He heard people say that during the difficult years, even mice and frogs were eaten, let alone snakes. Only toads were somewhat avoided or ingested minimally since they were mostly poisonous.
Maisui was a little scared, “Is this… edible?”
Lin Lan smiled and said, “Yes, snake meat is delicious. I’ll make it for you tomorrow.”
She said to Han Qingsong, “Third Brother, give the snake a good peel. Since it’s somewhat gamey, I think we shouldn’t fry it in a wok. Let’s stew it in a casserole tomorrow.”
